Russian military denies ‘missile attack’ on Kharkov (VIDEOS)
2 Jan, 2026 23:18
The Russian Defense Ministry has rejected Kiev’s accusations that it launched a missile strike on Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkov.
It called the reported incident an attempt to distract attention from its own deadly New Year’s Eve terrorist attack on Russian civilians.
Kiev claimed that at least two missiles hit a residential neighborhood in Kharkov on Friday, completely destroying an apartment building and injuring at least 19 people.
Ukrainian media released graphic footage of the aftermath, and Vladimir Zelensky immediately accused Moscow of seeking to disrupt peace talks.
However, initial videos from the scene indicated that smoke was already billowing from a building in the area before a large detonation was heard, and the footage neither features an air raid siren nor the noise of an approaching missile or drone.
“The Russian Armed Forces did not plan or launch any attacks using missiles or aviation weapons within the city of Kharkov,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement late Friday.
“Based on eyewitness videos published by Ukrainian information resources, the epicenter of the explosion was located in the Persona shopping center…
In the published video footage, heavy smoke of unknown origin was recorded in the building a few seconds before the explosion, which indicates a high probability of detonation of the ammunition stored there by the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” it added.
Kiev’s claims are intended to “distract the attention of the international community from the brutal terrorist attack committed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the night of January 1,” it added.
Shortly before midnight on New Year’s Eve, Ukrainian UAVs hit a cafe and hotel in the village of Khorly in Russia’s Kherson Region where about a hundred people were gathered for celebrations, setting it on fire. At least 27 civilians, including two minors, were killed and 31 others were injured in the attack.
Earlier on Friday, the Russian military announced it has conducted one large-scale attack and six group strikes inside Ukraine over the past week in response to Kiev’s “terrorist attacks on civilian targets in Russia.”
High-precision munitions, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, were utilized during the strikes. The targets included production facilities for long-range drones, as well as transportation and port infrastructure used by Kiev’s forces, arms and fuel depots, and temporary deployment sites of Ukrainian military units and foreign mercenaries, the ministry said.
On December 28-29, Kiev launched 91 long-range UAVs at the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Novgorod Region.
Moscow has condemned the attack as an act of “state terrorism,” saying that the raid was not only aimed at Putin, but also against US President Donald Trump’s “efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.”

Zelenskyy Hosts Security Talks As Russia Presses Drone Attacks Across Ukraine
Updated January 03, 2026 16:56 CET
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is hosting security talks in Kyiv on January 3 with Western partners as Moscow kept up its aerial barrage of Ukraine, including 95 overnight drone strikes.
Ukraine's Air Force said it intercepted 80 of the drones and reported no casualties, but an earlier strike on January 2 that hit a residential area of the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv injured more than 31 people and killed two, including a 3-year-old child.
The strikes and security talks come amid a flurry of US-backed efforts to push for an end to the nearly four-year war in Ukraine.
In Kyiv, Zelenskyy is joined by representatives from 18 European Union and NATO countries for the talks, including a US delegation that was supposed to join over video link.
"We are moving along three key tracks: security guarantees, reconstruction, and a basic framework for real peace," Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.
"We are preparing meetings in Europe that will take place next week. We are also preparing for meetings in the United States," he added.
The discussions follow weeks of stepped-up initiatives and pressure from Washington to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump has said notable progress has taken place but that "one or two very thorny, very tough issues" remain before each side is willing to sign off on the 20-point plan pushed by Washington.
Two of those prominent issues are how to allocate territory in eastern Ukraine and the fate of Europe's biggest nuclear plant in Zaporizhzhya, which is currently occupied by Russia.
Zelenskyy is set to meet European leaders in France on January 6 to discuss a potential peace deal and the latest from the battlefield in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy Reshuffles Top Officials Ahead Of Key Talks
Against that backdrop, the Ukrainian president named military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov as his new top aide on January 2.
Once formally appointed, he will replace Andriy Yermak, a Zelenskyy confidante and prominent powerbroker who resigned in November after investigators raided his house as part of a sweeping corruption probe.
Budanov has built up a strong reputation in Ukraine, credited with a series of daring operations against Russia.
Analysts say Zelenskyy aims to use the appointment to help restore trust in his leadership and state institutions and strengthen Ukraine's defenses against Russia and its hand in US-backed peace talks.
"Kyrylo has specialized experience in these areas and sufficient strength to deliver results," Zelenskyy wrote on X.
In a statement, Budanov said he had accepted the offer and would focus on the "strategic security of our state."
Zelenskyy also announced that he intends to replace Denys Shymhal as defense minister with Mykhaylo Fedorov, who is now minister of digital transformation.
"Mykhaylo is deeply involved in issues related to drones and is very effective in the digitalization of state services and processes," the Ukrainian president said.
On January 3, Zelenskyy said he spoke with Shmyhal and proposed him for the post of energy minister.
The position was recently vacated after the former head of the body, Svitlana Hrynchuk, tendered her resignation following Zelenskyy's call for her to step down amid a corruption scandal in which suspects allegedly discussed millions of dollars in kickbacks for protecting energy facilities.
Separately, Zelenskyy has also announced changes in Ukraine's regional leadership, saying there will be new heads in five regions, including the Dnipropetrovsk region, which lies close to Donetsk and Zaporizhzhya, partially occupied by Russian forces.
While Russian battlefield advancements have been limited and hard-fought since the first year of the full-scale war in Ukraine, a January 2 analysis from the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, found that Moscow's battlefield gains in 2025 were the highest since 2022.
The Russian Army captured more than 5,600 square kilometers, a total equivalent to more than the previous two years combined.
The amount of territory is still far short of the more than 60,000 square kilometers Russia took in 2022 following its full-scale invasion.
Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskiy said those gains resulted in almost 420,000 dead and wounded Russians in 2025, according to Ukrainian estimates.

IDF said planning to operate inspection site at Rafah Border Crossing when it reopens
JAnuary 3, 2026 1:48 am
The government is expected to order the reopening of the Rafah Border Crossing between Gaza and Egypt in the coming days, Israeli television reported Friday, as part of what it described as concessions Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made to US President Donald Trump in their meeting in Florida this week.
Netanyahu will hold a security consultation in Israel on Sunday, during which he will share the concessions he agreed to with Trump, including the reopening of the Rafah crossing in both directions, with an additional Israeli “inspection site” on the Gazan side, according Channel 12 news.
Israel has previously said it would open the crossing for people entering Gaza once Hamas returns all the hostages abducted in the Hamas onslaught of October 7, 2023, that sparked the war in Gaza.
The remains of one hostage, Police Master Sgt. Ran Gvili, are still in Gaza.
According to the unsourced Channel 12 report, the IDF will operate its own inspection site on the Israeli-controlled Gazan side of the reopened crossing, in addition to Egyptian and international forces that will secure the crossing itself.
The Israeli site will be equipped with devices to monitor people entering Gaza, and the IDF will be able to turn back people trying to enter the Strip from Egypt, the network said.
The Rafah crossing is normally meant only for people, not cargo, but it has also been used used by Gaza-bound aid trucks amid the war.
Israel, which seized the Gazan side of the crossing in May 2024, said last month that it would reopen the crossing for outgoing traffic as part of the US-brokered October 9 ceasefire deal with Hamas.
Egypt rejected the statement, saying the one-way opening amounted to forced displacement of the Palestinian from Gaza.
On Friday, American actor and film producer Angelina Jolie visited the Rafah crossing.
Jolie, who was special envoy to the UN refugee agency for over two decades until 2022, met with members of the Red Crescent on the Egyptian side of the crossing, and then visited a hospital in the nearby city of Arish to speak with Palestinian patients on Friday, according to Egyptian officials.
“What needs to happen is clear: the ceasefire must hold, and access must be sustained, safe and urgently scaled up so that aid, fuel and critical medical supplies can move quickly and consistently, at the volume required,” said Jolie.
According to a statement from her team, Jolie’s visit sought to raise support to raise support for the displaced and humanitarian workers in the crises in Gaza as well as in Sudan.
The foreign ministers of eight Arab and Muslim nations — including ceasefire mediators Egypt, Qatar and Turkey — also expressed concern about Gaza’s humanitarian situation in a joint statement Friday.
The situation has been “compounded by the continued lack of sufficient humanitarian access, acute shortages of essential life-saving supplies, and the slow pace of the entry of essential materials,” said the joint statement, which was also signed by Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Pakistan.

IDF says it killed suspect; 2 Gazans burn to death in tent
Also Friday, the Israel Defense Forces said that troops from the 188th Armored Brigade killed a suspect who crossed the Gaza ceasefire line in southern Gaza.
The soldiers “identified a terrorist who crossed the Yellow Line” and posed an immediate threat to the troops, who “eliminated the terrorist to remove the threat,” according to the military. It did not say if the suspect was armed.
Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis said Friday afternoon that it had received the body of a young man killed by IDF gunfire in Bani Suheila, which lies near Khan Younis on the Israeli-controlled side of the Yellow Line.
The man was identified in Palestinian media as Firas Abu Shanat, reportedly in his 20s.
Such incidents have occurred regularly since the Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal, with Hamas’s health ministry reporting at least 416 people killed by IDF gunfire since October 11.
The figure cannot be independently verified and does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
Separately, Amal Abu Al-Khair and her 5-year-old grandson Saud burned to death Thursday night in their nylon tent in western Gaza City’s Yarmouk area, on the Hamas-controlled side of the Yellow Line.
The nylon tent caught fire from cooking, a neighbor said. As 2026 begins, thousands of Palestinians battle harrowing winter conditions in flimsy makeshift housing and the humanitarian crisis persists.
Over the past weeks, cold winter rains have repeatedly lashed the sprawling tent cities, causing flooding, turning Gaza’s dirt roads into mud and causing buildings damaged in Israeli bombardment to collapse.
UNICEF says at least six children have now died of weather-related causes, including a 4-year-old who died in a building collapse.
At least three children have died of hypothermia, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.
High temperatures in December were in the 60s Fahrenheit (15-20 Celsius), but dipped into the mid-40s F (6-8 C) on some nights.
Aid groups say not enough shelter materials are getting into Gaza during the truce.
There is also concern that Israel’s recent suspension of more than three dozen international aid groups from operating in Gaza will make it even harder to get supplies like tents in.
The Diaspora Affairs Ministry said the organizations did not comply with stringent new “security and transparency” requirements concerning their employees.
UN Chief Antonio Guterres on Friday called for the ban “to be reversed, stressing that international non-governmental organizations are indispensable to life-saving humanitarian work and that the suspension risks undermining the fragile progress made during the ceasefire,” his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
“This announcement comes on top of earlier restrictions that have already delayed critical food, medical, hygiene and shelter supplies from entering Gaza.
This recent action will further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians,” Dujarric added.
Palestinians have long called for mobile homes and caravans to be allowed in to protect them against living in impractical and worn-out tents. In Yarmouk, people live in nylon tents near a garbage dump.
COGAT, the Defense Ministry body that oversees aid to Gaza, says it has let in hundreds of thousands of tents and tarpaulins and is waiting for international organizations to let in close to 100,000 pallets of “water-related items.”

UN mission concerned over drone strike amid intensifying fighting in Congo
Jan 03, 2026, 06:11 AM
Kinshasa, Jan 3 (IANS) The United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), known as MONUSCO, voiced deep concern on Saturday over reports of a drone strike in the country's conflict-hit eastern region.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, MONUSCO strongly condemned attacks, including those carried out by drones, that target or affect civilians and civilian infrastructure, urging an independent verification of the reported incident in Masisi-centre, located in North Kivu Province, where fighting has been raging between the DRC government forces and the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group.
The UN mission called on all parties to strictly respect the ceasefire and international humanitarian law, and to prioritize the implementation of existing peace agreements reached under various diplomatic mediation efforts.
According to a statement released late Friday by the international medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres, 42 people, including women and children, were admitted to the Masisi General Referral Hospital after an airstrike hit a residential area.
The patients suffered shrapnel wounds and other trauma, and two of them died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Masisi is among the areas hardest hit by the conflict in the eastern DRC, Xinhua news agency reported. The reported drone strike came amid intensified fighting last week between the M23, the DRC military, and their respective allies.
In neighbouring South Kivu Province, fighting also broke out Saturday morning between the M23 and pro-government militias known as the Wazalendo around Uvira, a strategic town that the M23 briefly seized on December 10, 2025, and said it had withdrawn from a week later, local media reported.
The eastern DRC has been plagued by recurring violence for decades, a situation further aggravated by the resurgence of the M23 rebellion since late 2021.
Kinshasa has accused Rwanda of backing the rebel group, allegations that Kigali has repeatedly denied.

U.S. Drones in Puerto Rico Carry Heavy Hellfire Loads Amid CIA Strike in Venezuela
Last updated: January 3, 2026
Over the past week, U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drones have been increasingly observed operating with larger payloads of AGM-114 Hellfire missiles from bases in Puerto Rico.
Notably, one drone was spotted carrying an unprecedented ten Hellfire missiles, representing a significant increase in armament that had not previously been documented.
This development coincides with reports of a covert strike executed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) against a target in Venezuela, identified as a port facility used by the Tren de Aragua criminal organization for drug smuggling.
This group was designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. government earlier this year, adding a layer of complexity to American military operations in the region.
According to sources cited by CNN and The New York Times, this drone strike occurred earlier in December.
Although details remain sparse, President Trump referenced the operation during a recent press conference, suggesting that he had previously authorized such covert actions in Venezuela.
This marks a notable escalation in U.S. involvement in the region beyond traditional counter-drug measures.
Reapers have been based out of Rafael Hernandez Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, since September, typically armed with two to four Hellfire missiles.
However, reports indicate a shift to loadouts of six, eight, and up to ten missiles between December 21 and 24.
This new trend necessitated the introduction of four-rail launchers, previously unseen on U.S. MQ-9s, which are more commonly employed on attack helicopters.
Images shared by local spotters reveal these drones not only carrying heavier ammunition but also featuring an unidentified pod that has been associated with enhanced sensor capabilities.
Notably, the pod had emerged in the aftermath of two Reaper collisions in 2020 and has appeared on MQ-9s in other regions, such as Romania, Japan, and South Korea.
The motivations behind the increased armament of the drones remain unclear, especially given the current pace of strikes—averaging one every four days against vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.
Questions persist about the legal implications of these missions, as well as their overall intelligence framework.
U.S. military assets in the Caribbean have been on the rise, with additional units like Air Force Special Operations CV-22 Ospreys also deployed to Aguadilla.
This surge in personnel and aircraft points to a broadening of operational capabilities, particularly as administration talks hint at an aggressive stance toward Venezuela’s regime.
The covert nature of the recent strike—including details of the target’s size and the possible need for substantial ordnance—hints at a strategic shift in U.S. tactics.
Intelligence reports have indicated that the CIA operates MQ-9s capable of armed missions, though it remains uncertain whether the Reapers or alternate drones executed the recent strike.
Importantly, the characterization of the strike location as a “port facility” suggests a significant operational target.
This latest move illustrates a remarkable escalation in U.S. engagement in Venezuela, raising longstanding questions about both the intelligence driving these operations and the broader implications for regional security.
The evolving situation surrounding the use of Reaper drones indicates that U.S. strategies in the Caribbean and Latin America are transforming, warranting close observation in the weeks and months to come.

Mysterious Lights Reported Over Alamogordo Skies on January 2, 2026: Alien Craft or Top-Secret Test from Holloman AFB?
1-02-2026 9:09pm
Residents of Alamogordo and surrounding areas in Otero County reported seeing unusual bright lights streaking across the evening sky on January 2, 2026, sparking immediate speculation about extraterrestrial activity or a classified military project at nearby Holloman Air Force Base.
Eyewitnesses described a glowing trail of light appearing shortly after sunset, moving rapidly from the west before fading into the night.
Social media quickly lit up with videos and photos, with some users claiming the object maneuvered in ways inconsistent with conventional aircraft. “It wasn’t a plane or a meteor—it hovered and then shot off like nothing I’ve seen,” one local posted online.
The sightings come amid longstanding UFO lore tied to the region.
Holloman AFB, located just west of Alamogordo, has been at the center of alien encounter rumors since the 1960s and 1970s, including unverified claims of a UFO landing on the base tarmac where extraterrestrial beings allegedly met with military personnel.
These stories gained traction through documentaries and books, though they remain unsubstantiated by official records.
Conspiracy theorists were quick to connect the dots.
“Holloman has a history— this could be a top-secret reverse-engineering project or even contact,” said one online commentator.
New Mexico’s rich history of unexplained aerial phenomena, from the 1947 Roswell incident to frequent modern sightings, fueled the speculation.
However, a more terrestrial explanation emerged rapidly: the lights were almost certainly the exhaust plume and staging of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
The Falcon 9 lifted off at approximately 6:09 p.m. PST (7:09 p.m. MST in New Mexico) on January 2, carrying Italy’s COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation-FM3 Earth observation satellite.
Vandenberg launches often follow a southern trajectory, making the bright rocket exhaust visible across vast distances in the western U.S., especially during twilight hours when the high-altitude plume is illuminated by the sun against a darkening sky.
This “jellyfish effect” or glowing trail is a common sight for West Coast launches and has been mistaken for UFOs numerous times in the past.
No rocket launches were scheduled or reported from other sites on that date that would align with the sightings. Holloman AFB officials have not commented on any tests or projects coinciding with the event, and no unusual military activity was reported.
While the SpaceX launch provides a clear, evidence-based explanation, the incident highlights New Mexico’s enduring fascination with the unknown. The state ranks high in per-capita UFO reports, and areas near military installations like Holloman and White Sands continue to draw skywatchers hoping for something extraordinary.
As of now, the lights over Alamogordo appear to be a case of mistaken identity—but in the Land of Enchantment, the debate is far from over.

UFO Disclosure And The Vatican: Why Alien Speculation Keeps Circling The Holy See
January 2nd, 2026
As governments, scientists, and defense agencies revisit unexplained aerial phenomena, one institution keeps getting pulled into the conversation: the Vatican.
Recent tabloid coverage tying remarks by Vatican scientists to Pope Leo XIV has revived a familiar claim — that the Catholic Church may be quietly sitting on evidence of extraterrestrial visitation.
While there is no verified proof of such a cover-up, the Vatican’s long public record on astronomy and life beyond Earth helps explain why the rumors persist.
Rather than secrecy, the historical record shows something more pragmatic: a slow, consistent effort to reconcile faith with science as humanity’s understanding of the universe expands.
What the Vatican Has Actually Said
The Vatican’s involvement in astronomy dates back centuries, making it one of the oldest continuous institutional observers of the night sky.
Over time, Church leaders have repeatedly addressed — and demystified — the question of life beyond Earth.
Key Vatican Statements on Extraterrestrial Life
13th–16th centuries: Celestial signs, not spacecraft
Medieval Vatican records reference comets, eclipses, and “wheels of fire” in the sky. Historians agree these were recorded as religious or symbolic phenomena, not technological encounters.
1891: Vatican Observatory formalized
The modern Vatican Observatory was established to engage directly with scientific astronomy, signaling early institutional acceptance that faith and empirical science can coexist.
2008: “Aliens would not contradict faith”
A Vatican astronomer publicly stated that belief in extraterrestrial life is compatible with Catholic theology, framing any such beings as part of God’s creation rather than a theological threat.
2014: Pope Francis weighs in
Pope Francis famously remarked that he would baptize a Martian if one asked — a comment widely misquoted as UFO endorsement, but intended to emphasize inclusivity, not disclosure.
2023: UFOs reenter the spotlight
Congressional testimony by David Grusch alleged a 1933 UFO crash in Italy and suggested Vatican involvement. No documentary or physical evidence has surfaced to support the claim.
2024–2025: Renewed speculation under Pope Leo XIV
Media outlets revived older Vatican statements on extraterrestrial life, recasting them as hints of “soft disclosure.” Vatican officials again denied possessing any evidence of alien visitation.
Why the Vatican Is a Magnet for UFO Narratives
From a technology and policy perspective, the Vatican occupies a unique role. It maintains one of the world’s largest historical archives, controls access tightly, and communicates cautiously — all traits that, in the modern information ecosystem, fuel suspicion.
Add the current environment:
Governments acknowledging unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs)
Advances in space telescopes and AI-driven sky monitoring
Public distrust of large institutions
And even restrained theological statements can be reframed as signals of hidden knowledge.
Yet Vatican scientists stress that openness to possibility is not the same as confirmation. The Vatican Observatory focuses on mainstream astrophysics — galaxy formation, planetary systems, and cosmology — not UFO investigation.
What’s Been Fact-Checked — and What Hasn’t
There is no verified evidence that the Vatican has hidden records proving extraterrestrial visitation.
Claims about secret alien files, recovered spacecraft, or Vatican-brokered disclosure agreements remain unsubstantiated. Scholars who have accessed Vatican archives report extensive religious, diplomatic, and scientific material — but nothing resembling modern UFO evidence.
What is verifiable is the Church’s long-standing position:
Life elsewhere in the universe is scientifically plausible
Such life would not undermine Christian theology
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence
That stance aligns closely with how many research institutions and governments now frame the issue.
Bottom line
The Vatican’s role in the UFO debate is less about hidden technology and more about institutional continuity. For centuries, it has adapted its worldview as humanity’s understanding of the universe expanded — from heliocentrism to deep-space astronomy.
As AI, advanced sensors, and commercial spaceflight accelerate discovery, the Vatican’s measured approach may offer an unexpected lesson for tech and policy leaders alike: acknowledge uncertainty, resist hype, and separate possibility from proof.
For now, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence remains a scientific endeavor — not a religious secret.
