Bitcoin is backed by mathematics. So it does have scarcity and veracity. In fact it would survive something like a pure gold asteroid smashing into earth (economically at least).
But I agree, I don't like Bitcoin as such as a basis for currency. Maybe some crypto currency, but it still seems a bit fragile to me (EMP etc).
