Reports of an active shooter at a hospital in California sparked a huge police response on Wednesday night.

Mercy Southwest Hospital in Bakersfield went into lockdown as police searched room-to-room and visitors barricaded themselves into rooms at 9.45pm, according to local media.

Unconfirmed reports of shots being heard surfaced at around 8pm, prompting police to arrive at the scene and conduct a room-to-room search.
