An old tweet from Joe Biden claiming Trump “admires thugs and dictators like Nicolas Maduro” surfaced on Saturday after President Trump captured the Venezuelan leader following precision military strikes on the South American country.
During the 2020 election cycle, Joe Biden said if he were elected President, he would “stand with the Venezuelan people for democracy” as he criticized Trump for reportedly being open to meeting with Maduro.
“Trump talks tough on Venezuela, but admires thugs and dictators like Nicolas Maduro,” Joe Biden said in response to June 2020 report claiming Trump is “open to meeting with” Maduro.

President Trump ordered military strikes on Venezuela and captured Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores very early Saturday morning.
Maduro and his wife were indicted on four counts, including a narco-terrorism conspiracy charge.
Trump later posted a humiliating photo of a blindfolded Maduro aboard USS Iwo Jima.

A lot of the commentary misses why this case actually stands up. The Maduro indictment is solid where it counts legally.
Start with the insiders. Hugo “El Pollo” Carvajal who pled guilty in 2025, and Cliver Alcalá Cordones who pled guilty in 2023 were core regime figures who cooperated with firsthand knowledge of how the system worked.
Then there’s hard corroboration outside U.S. intelligence. The DC-9 seized in Mexico with 5.5 tons of cocaine, the 1.3 ton seizure at Paris CDG, and recorded DEA cases that already produced convictions (the “narcosobrinos”).
The indictment runs through 2025 by design. That is intended to undercut claims this is stale, political, or backward looking.

This is absolutely insane:
Venezuela currently has 303 billion barrels of crude oil reserves, which Trump says the US now controls.
Oil prices are trading at ~$57/barrel, making Venezuela's total reserves worth $17.3 TRILLION.
Even if the US sells this oil for HALF of the market rate, that's still $8.7 TRILLION.
In other words, in 12 hours, the US has gained control of oil reserves worth more than the entire GDP of ALL countries in the world, aside from the US and China.
That's 4 TIMES larger than the GDP of Japan.
Most people do not realize how much the world just changed.
Oil markets will react to this news for the first time on Sunday at 6 PM ET.

Here's some Venezuela history that most don't talk about. It's an important story that helped shape the past century+ and it matters today.
Venezuela was originally colonized by Spain in 1532 and finally gained independence in 1830. They experienced quite a bit of turmoil through the rest of the 19th century, but retained their sovereignty.
Fast forward to 1895, England had established a territory in neighboring Guyana and the borders were only loosely drawn as the territory was mostly occupied by useless jungle and snakes.
This all changed when gold is discovered in the Uruwari River basin, pretty much smack dab in the middle of these loose borders. England, or course, claimed the disputed land as their own, while Venezuela, using older Spanish maps, made their own claim.
Venezuela hired a former US ambassador to be their lobbyist for their claims and appealed to US President Grover Cleveland to back them, citing the Monroe Doctrine from 1825. The Monroe Doctrine had never actually been enforced, mostly because the US never had the ability to enforce it, and the Western Hemisphere had remained the playground of European powers, in particular England towards the latter half of the 19th century as their economic might left them the dominant global empire.
At the time, England was still the Empire Where the Sun Never Sets. Their territory ruled over 400 million subjects and had the dominant navy in every sea they chose. The upstart Americans had only 70 million citizens and a navy that could not compete. But they were in the middle of a massive industrial expansion and those in DC were eager to stretch their muscles to see if the British Lion still roared.
Enter Secretary of State Richard Olney, who would come to be called the "Iron Secretary". Olney's legal background was mostly breaking union railroad strikes on behalf of the Robber Barons, and his pitbull mentality carried over to his diplomatic duties. He writes one of the most arrogant diplomatic letters in history, demanding that England acquiesce to America's demands.
This dispatch became known as the "20 Inch Shell" because it was so bombastic that it shocked the world at the audacity to dictate terms in such a condescending manner to the British. It basically said that America owns the hemisphere and we say what happens here. It told the Queen that they were guests in the hemisphere who had overstayed their welcome.
This was gambit based on geopolitical realities. England was facing pressure on all sides. Germany was challenging their industrial dominance (as was the US) and building a navy to rival the Royal Navy. Russia was flexing its muscles. France continued to be France. The Boers were making noise in Africa. Olney was betting that England was too overstretched to commit to a patch of land in the jungle.
England's Lord Salisbury responded by ignoring the letter for 4 months. This, of course, was received as an insult in America. When Salisbury finally responded, the letter was a dismantling of the American argument and dismissed the Monroe Doctrine as having no standing. He refused all arbitration efforts.
President Cleveland received this as an act of war. Facing a tough election from Republicans who considered him weak, Cleveland made a speech to Congress extolling American sovereignty in the Americas, and a bipartisan patriotic fervor for war with England spread throughout the nation.

The US was no match for England militarily, but America had one advantage; geography. The American plan was to invade Canada, something the British navy could do nothing about. The unguarded 3000 mile border was vulnerable to America's population and productivity advantages. American was willing to sacrifice its seaboard cities for the tradeoff of seized Canadian cities and territories.
Salisbury realized that America was crazy enough to play this bluff out, but he wasn't the sort to back down. War seemed to be on the horizon.
Across the world, Cecil B. Rhodes launched a failed raid in South Africa against the Boers. The British raiders were captured by the Boers, and the world saw England as acting like a pirate state. Kaiser Wilhelm, Queen Victoria's grandson, was jealous of England and wanted to make a statement. He sent a telegram that indicated that Germany would have stepped in to help the Boers.
This set off a fire in England, as the British considered Germany to be the bigger threat. Salisbury realized they couldn't fight wars on so many fronts. The British chose to play nice with their English speaking cousins in America.
Salisbury agreed to arbitration over Venezuela. It was capitulation. American was now to be considered a world power.
Of course, the territorial dispute screwed over Venezuela, as American and British representatives maneuvered to ensure Anglo-American interests got priority over the territory. England ended up with 99% of the disputed territory (This is the same territory that is disputed with Guyana and Venezuela over minerals in 2024).
From that day forward, the Anglo-American alliance shifted. This was called The Great Reproachment. England could no longer afford to police the Western hemisphere, so they'd outsource the security to the United States.
The Monroe Doctrine was finally enforceable.
This was the birth of the "Special Relationship".
Of course, America in 1898 would launch their first war of empire in the Spanish American War, and the rest of the 20th century is but an extension of this agreement.
So we can thank Venezuela for allowing America to usher in its own Age of Empire.
Venezuela would try to reopen the arbitration case in 1962, citing the corruption. This was a diplomatic stalemate for several decades.
Until 2015, when Exxon Mobil discovered huge oil deposits off the coast of Guyana. This was exactly what led to the current situation with Venezuela, as the US used its military and diplomatic might to defend Guyana and put sanctions on Venezuela.
This story not only shows how the US began its banana republic diplomacy, but also shows that we've never stopped doing so.
