I would guarantee you that if part of that referendum was to give the people the choice to be annexed by the US as a demilitarized zone, for a duration of 10 to 20 years, until peace settles in, I think the people would choose the US. Something as outrageous as this would also allow the US to normalize trade with Russia as a side affect, especially if Crimea was split into 3 zones.
