British military ‘wanted to acquire UFO technology to protect Brits’
Updated January 4, 2026 2:27pm
The British military thought there was ‘basis in fact’ to UFO sightings and wanted to get their hands on the ‘extraterrestrial’ technology, previously secret files show.
Confidential memos from the Defence Intelligence Staff (DIS) within the Ministry of Defence warned that ‘unidentified aerial phenomena’ (UAP) were a ‘potential threat’ to the UK in the 1990s.
The documents – now in the National Archives in Kew – also reveal how Britain’s most well-known UFO sighting at Rendlesham Forest was ‘confirmed’ by US military personnel.
One internal correspondence from March 4, 1997 reads: ‘Logic would indicate that if significant numbers are reporting seeing strange objects in the sky then there may be a basis in fact.
‘It could be argued that UAPs pose a potential threat to the defence of the realm since we have no idea what they are!’
Intelligence officers appeared particularly concerned about the reports of large, silent, low-flying black triangles which came out of Belgium in their thousands between November 1989 and April 1990.
The reports sparked calls for Britain to try get hold of the technology.
The document noted: ‘A supplementary issue is the possibility of technology acquisition.
‘UAPs do not appear to use conventional reaction propulsion.
‘The Belgian deltas (confirmed by the country’s MoD) hovered for long periods and accelerated quickly to supersonic speeds, outrunning F-16s.
‘If this represents real technology perhaps it should be acquired.’
Another briefing letter, marked ‘Secret UK Eyes B’, acknowledged that the British military did not have the ‘reported technology’.
It added: ‘No matter the origin, the determination of the technology, and possible acquisition, is a matter for Defence Intelligence Staff [DIS].’
The correspondence added that ‘some reports described objects in terms of manoeuvre, speed and shape which lie beyond our engineering knowledge and that which could be reasonably expected from hostile powers.’
The file also stressed that most UFO reports were tenuous, with only a small number that could not be explained immediately.
The documents jokingly dismissed the possibility of alien life as part of fringe conspiracy theories.
The file reads: ‘Mention of UAPs is guaranteed to generate mirth and Little Green Men jokes, possibly because of the fringe element of “crazies”.’
Rendlesham Forest UFO sightings ‘confirmed’
A separate file from the British Military sheds new light on the Rendlesham Forest incident.
Dating back to December 1980, members of the US Air Force stationed at RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk, England, reported seeing unexplained lights and a craft in the forest.
Witnesses, including high-ranking officers, described seeing a glowing, metallic, triangular object hovering and emitting strange beams of light.
The document says that the Rendlesham Forest ‘landing’ was ‘confirmed by the US unit commander and others’.
It adds: ‘In both [Rendlesham Forest and Belgian] cases the UAP apparently did not use any conventional propulsion system and could hover as well as move at considerable speed.
‘The French have always had an interest in this topic … and I am aware that there is an informal intelligence grouping in the US.’
The sighting has fuelled decades of speculation and conspiracy theories ranging from alien encounters to secret military tests.
One UFO expert, Philip Mantle, told Metro he is convinced something happened over those fateful nights in 1980 – but doesn’t necessarily think aliens were involved.
The former Director of Investigations for the British UFO Research Association speculated that soldiers could have come into contact with ‘strange plasma’ that caused ‘electromagnetic effects’.
The previously secret file also claimed to have a ‘Moscow report’ that suggested ‘two military scientists are responsible for UFOs’.

Mysterious 'UFO clouds' a stunning sight from famous North Wales beach
04:41, 04 Jan 2026
Otherworldly clouds have been spotted above the North Wales mountains glowing eerily in the low sun.
Historically, the rare formations have been likened to flying saucers and have even been blamed for several UFO sightings.
Walkers in Eryri (Snowdonia) and the Llŷn Peninsula were struck by the clouds’ strange beauty.
They twice appeared briefly earlier this week, with Anglesey’s southwest coast producing some of the most eye-catching displays.
During the festive period, the popular Newborough beach of Traeth Llanddwyn has been as busy as ever, with visitors facing long queues to exit the national nature reserve.
For many, it was a price worth paying for the stunning views and the rare sight of “UFO clouds” drifting over from the Pen Llŷn mountains.
The quirky formations are also referred to as pancake clouds because they appear flat and stacked.
But their formal name is lenticular clouds, a name originating from a Latin word meaning “lens-like”.
Some of the best pictures after snow filled start to 2026 in North Wales
The lost Anglesey village wiped from the map by the Black Death
They’re not particularly common in the UK as they need the right weather patterns to make an appearance.
As hilly terrain is another prerequisite, Eryri’s mountains are as good a place any to find them.
So too are high pressure systems like the kind we’ve seen this week - and which haves also been responsible for a series of spectacular cloud inversions in the national park.
According to the Met Office, lenticular clouds form when wind blows across hills at different heights through the troposphere - the lowest layer of Earth’s atmosphere.
The forecaster explained: “When air blows across a mountain range, in certain circumstances, it can set up a train of large standing waves in the air downstream, rather like ripples forming in a river when water flows over an obstruction.
“If there is enough moisture in the air, the rising motion of the wave will cause water vapour to condense, forming the unique appearance of lenticular clouds.”
Sometimes you get several of ultra-flattened clouds stacked on top of one another - like a pile of pancakes.
Online, photos of the national park’s UFOs were shared from the Glyders in northern Eryri and from Blaenau Ffestiniog further south. In some cases they didn’t hang around for long - perhaps as little at 10 minutes.
UFO clouds may not beam anyone up into the sky - but do signify strong, gusty winds on the ground directly below.
Pilots tend to avoid fling near them because they can cause significant turbulence, said the Met Office. On the other hand, skilled glider pilots like them because they provide a visual reference of where air is rising.

Sources Blame Senator McConnell for UFO Transparency Law Failure
3 January 2026
In 2025, Senator Mitch McConnell and his staff played a central role in the derailment of major Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) transparency legislation, according to sources who spoke to Liberation Times.
Sources identify Terry Carmack, McConnell’s chief of staff, as the staffer who they say pressed to have the UAP Disclosure Act (UAPDA) stripped from the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), after Representative Eric Burlison had submitted it as an amendment.
One source claimed to Liberation Times, “Mitch has always worked against it [UAP disclosure] - he is the number one villain - number two is Terry.”
During a UAP hearing on 9 September 2025, convened by the House Oversight Committee’s Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, Burlison said he had only recently learned that his UAPDA amendment had not made it into the House NDAA package.
He suggested the decision was made on ‘germaneness’ grounds—House procedure for whether an amendment is considered relevant to the underlying bill—and he added in frustration:
"Just last night, I tried to get an amendment onto the National Defense Authorization Act that fit in the germaneness [meaning relevant to a subject under consideration] of that bill to have UAP disclosure, and conveniently it was named non-germane, mostly deemed by staff, not even an elected official - this is the kind of stuff we repeatedly see."
In a recent appearance on the Psicoactivo Podcast, Burlison said there was a final, narrow window to add the UAPDA during ‘conference’—the closed-door phase when House and Senate negotiators reconcile their competing NDAA versions into a single compromise bill.
He said that, based on what he had been told by sources within the Senate, staff on the Senate Appropriations Committee were responsible for the UAPDA’s failure at that stage.
However, he emphasised that the claim was second-hand—relayed to him by individuals connected to the Senate—and that he had not been able to substantiate it.
Liberation Times understands from multiple sources that McConnell—who sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee—and his office objected to the UAPDA on jurisdictional grounds, at least officially.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, the concern was that the legislation would draw the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform into some of the government’s most sensitive classified work.
1/2
Burlison’s amendment text would have provided that the chairs, ranking members, and designated staff of both committees be granted the same security clearances and access to relevant presidential and departmental or agency special access and compartmented access programs.
Put simply, that would amount to formal permission to see specific classified programs, not merely to hold a high-level clearance.
In that context, Special Access Programs and compartmented programs are ‘extra-locked’ efforts, where information is tightly restricted through additional access controls and shared only with approved individuals who have a demonstrable need-to-know.
Sources suggest the sticking point was the prospect that committee access could cut across both Title 10 authorities, which govern military operations, and Title 50 authorities, which govern intelligence activities.
First unveiled publicly in July 2023 by then–Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the UAP Disclosure Act proposed establishing an independent UAP Records Review Board to oversee the review and release of government records related to UAP.
The Board would have consisted of nine U.S. citizens nominated by the President. It would have been empowered to obtain relevant UAP records, evaluate whether they should be disclosed immediately or postponed, and advise on the terms of any release.
The proposal also included text regarding the public disclosure of certain UAP-related materials, including any potential biological evidence and associated craft, where applicable.
Under the plan, any materials or biological evidence of unknown or non-human origin would be subject to the federal government’s power of eminent domain—meaning any private entity in possession would be required to surrender them to the government.
Despite repeated efforts by Schumer and other senior lawmakers, including Senators Rounds and Gillibrand, the Act has still not been implemented in full.
Sources told Liberation Times that, in 2023, then–Senate Minority Leader McConnell was among the politicians blamed for stripping out some of the UAPDA’s most consequential provisions from that year’s NDAA.
Watergate and Pentagon Papers attorney Daniel Sheehan echoed those claims, asserting that opposition came from five influential Republicans: Senators Roger Wicker and Mitch McConnell, and Representatives Mike Turner, Mike Rogers, and Mike Johnson. In 2023, he told Liberation Times:
"98% of everybody in Congress is in support of this bill. It’s just these five guys holding it up."
In 2024, a fuller version of the UAPDA was submitted again. Once more, McConnell was blamed for the failure.
At the time, Matthew Ford—then affiliated with the UAP Disclosure Foundation—wrote on X that McConnell had blocked the UAPDA’s inclusion in the NDAA manager’s package.
In 2025, Senators Schumer, Rounds, and Gillibrand again introduced the UAPDA as an amendment, but it was not included in the Senate’s version of the NDAA.
That omission prompted Burlison to submit the measure as an amendment to the House version of the NDAA, which ultimately failed.
Liberation Times requested comment from Senator McConnell’s office and from Terry Carmack directly regarding these allegations, but had received no response at the time of publication.

Dr. Garry Nolan Returns: The Plan for Disclosure WITHOUT The Government
Jan 4, 2026
Stanford Professor and UAP research pioneer Dr. Garry Nolan returns to The Good Trouble Show for a critical update on the fight for transparency.
In this exclusive interview, we explore "Plan B"—the strategy for public disclosure that bypasses government gatekeepers entirely.
Today's Agenda:
Based on recent developments, Dr. Nolan breaks down the current state of the UAP / UFO phenomenon:
•The Narrative Shift: Why the discussion of non-human intelligence is no longer "fringe" but a mainstream reality—and why that is already a major victory.
•Community Power: How we organize for serious self-investigation to force public disclosure without the government.
•The Disinformation Network: Specific strategies to expose and publicize the network operating behind the scenes.
•The WSJ Controversy: Dr. Nolan discusses the recent Wall Street Journal article and specifically how •The Good Trouble Show’s rapid reporting allowed the community to be prepared for the narrative attack.
🏆 A Titan of Science: The Kornberg & Berg Award
We also celebrate a monumental honor: The Stanford Medicine Alumni Association has awarded Dr. Garry P. Nolan the Arthur Kornberg and Paul Berg Lifetime Achievement Award in Biomedical Sciences.
In 2010, the Stanford University Medical Center Alumni Association Board of Governors established this award to recognize the lifetime achievements of Stanford University School of Medicine alumni in the biomedical sciences.
It carries the names of Arthur Kornberg, MD, and Paul Berg, PhD, in recognition of their pioneering contributions to medicine and their service to Stanford.
In 1959, Dr. Kornberg came to Stanford as chair of the newly established Department of Biochemistry. In the same year, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine along with Severo Ochoa for their work in elucidating how DNA is built.
These basic studies paved the road to recombinant DNA and genetic engineering, now important elements in the treatment of cancer and viral infections.
Dr. Berg also came to Stanford in 1959. His work with recombinant DNA, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1980, helped launch the biotechnology industry.
Drs. Berg and Kornberg brought to Stanford a passion for discovery, groundbreaking research, and a strong spirit of excitement and cooperation.
By receiving this honor, Dr. Nolan joins a lineage of scientific giants—proving that the mind leading the charge on UAP transparency is one of the most respected in modern history.
