Cuba, Venezuela, China, And America's Left-Wing Revolution
Donald Trump retrieved Nicolás Maduro from Venezuela and brought him to New York to be arraigned in the Southern District. Venezuelans in the diaspora celebrated the symbolic end of a tyrant's impunity. Meanwhile, in the United States, something stranger happened: American socialist organizations erupted in rage.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) issued a statement condemning the action and demanding Maduro's release. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani—a DSA member—reportedly consulted with Ramzi Kassem, a lawyer infamous for representing al-Qaeda figures, and allegedly called President Trump to "register his opposition." At the same time, Neville Roy Singham's network hosted a pro-Maduro protest in Times Square, even as Venezuelan exiles celebrated freedom from the man who ruined their country.
So we must ask the obvious question: why? Why are ostensibly American organizations so emotionally invested in the fate of a foreign dictator? Why does the capture of a Venezuelan strongman trigger outrage in gentrified Brooklyn, rather than relief?
The first answer is ideological. Socialists, even those who insist on calling themselves "democratic", do not fundamentally support American interests.
The branding is marketing. "Democratic socialism" is designed to sound like Scandinavia with better coffee. In practice, their heroes are Havana and Caracas, not Helsinki. They tell voters they want the Nordic model; what they defend, reflexively and ferociously, is the Cuban and Venezuelan model: centralized power, ideological conformity, and permanent opposition to the United States.
The second answer is historical and structural. The modern American left did not materialize spontaneously on college campuses. It was built, carefully, deliberately, over decades, beginning with Soviet influence operations and later absorbed by Cuban intelligence. And today, that network is materially dependent on Venezuela. Without Venezuelan oil, Cuba collapses. When Maduro falls, the lights quite literally go out in Havana.
Next came the National Lawyers Guild (NLG), founded in 1937. As the Capital Research Center notes, the NLG has been consistently identified with radical-left politics and was heavily influenced by communists in its early years. Key Weather Underground figures like Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers had strong ties to the National Lawyers Guild (NLG). Dohrn served as the first law student organizer.
Today, the Guild provides legal support and protest training for Black Lives Matter, Antifa, and other left-wing street movements, teaching activists how to push confrontation to the legal edge without crossing into prosecutable domestic terrorism.

Announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in September as a way to verify job candidates’ right to work, the scheme is slated for rollout by 2028-29 at a staggering £1.8 billion cost. But the government has stonewalled on details, fueling suspicions of mission creep.
Shadow Cabinet Office minister Mike Wood blasted the idea: “Labour said their plan for mandatory digital ID was about tackling illegal immigration. But now we hear they are secretly considering forcing it on newborns. What do babies have to do with stopping the boats? This would be a deeply sinister overreach by Labour – and all without any proper national debate.”
Former Tory Cabinet minister Sir David Davis echoed the outrage, calling it “creeping state surveillance.” He added: “The idea that we should allocate children ID at birth is frankly an affront to centuries of British history, and is being put out by stupid ministers who really don’t understand the technology they are playing with. They think they are being clever and modern, but a large number of people will be outraged by this. It will end up being hated by a lot of people.”
Davis accused Starmer of peddling the policy on a “bogus premise” before quietly ballooning it without parliamentary input, labeling it a “constitutional disgrace delivered in a disgraceful manner.”
Liberal Democrat spokesman Lisa Smart warned: “Reports that ministers may be considering dragging newborn babies into their already over-reaching digital ID scheme would be a frightening development.”
Attendees at the meetings, sworn to secrecy, described jaws dropping when the newborn ID concept was raised. One source told the Daily Mail: “The disturbing prospect of digital IDs for newborn babies shows this has nothing to do with right-to-work checks, immigration or giving people choices. It’s a cradle-to-grave digital file being dishonestly forced on every single Briton. This is a shocking, underhand way to massively expand a controversial policy our country has always rejected.”

Insider Trading? New Polymarket Account Made 12x Gain On Venezuela Intervention
As the dust settles on President Trump's Friday-night blitz on Venezuela, suspicions of insider trading on the secret operation are rising, after a brand-new Polymarket account scored a huge profit by betting on a US military attack just before it happened. As a result, a US House representative is already preparing to introduce a bill that would prohibit government officials from using inside info to profit in prediction markets.
The account in question was created on Dec. 27, and quickly placed roughly $34,000 in bets on US intervention in Venezuela and Maduro's ouster both happening by January 31. On the Maduro prediction alone, the account scored a 1,242% gain, turning $32,537 into $436,760. At the time of the bets, the market placed the probability of intervention in January at just 6%.
The list of suspects could be quite a long one, given the military was poised to strike for days. "We were going to do this four days ago but the weather was not perfect," Trump said after the attacks and Maduro's extraction. "And then all of a sudden it opened up and we said go." Military officials were said to have contemplated a Christmas-day attack. What's more, given officials' public talk about rehearsals of the operation, preparations likely spanned weeks, following months of a build-up of assets in the region.
That said, one can't entirely rule out the possibility of someone outside government reading headlines and placing a big bet, and the mystery account wasn't the only one placing bets on US intervention. According to the Wall Street Journal, more than $56 million had been placed on Maduro's ouster, with $11 million betting he'd be gone by Jan. 31. Another $40 million in losing bets had been placed on him leaving by Nov. 30 or Dec. 31. This X user claimed to have made $80,000 by translating a surge in Pentagon-area pizza traffic into imminent military action:
Regardless of who owns all those accounts, Democratic New York Rep. Ritchie Torres is planning to target officials' potential to profit from access to government secrets. According to Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News, Torres will introduce the "Public Integrity in Financial Prediction Markets Act of 2026." Here's how Sherman's source describes it:
This bill prohibits federal elected officials, political appointees, and Executive Branch employees from engaging in certain transactions involving prediction market contracts when they either possess material nonpublic information relevant to the transaction or could reasonably obtain such information through their official duties. The restriction applies to buying, selling, or exchanging prediction market contracts tied to government policy, government action, or political outcomes on platforms engaged in interstate commerce.
Torres is targeting a narrow universe of people, leaving plenty of opportunity for other people in government to profit from inside information – such as a staff sergeant at the Pentagon, or his girlfriend. Outside government, staffers at the Washington Post and New York Times also had an opportunity to profit on the Venezuela operation, as Semafor reports that both outlets learned of the operation shortly before it took place, but refrained from publishing the news to avoid putting US forces in peril.
Responding to news of Torres' upcoming bill, Polymarket rival Kalshi said its rules prohibit trading by anyone inside or outside of government who "has access to material non-public information that is the subject of an Underlying of any Contract or that has the ability to exert any influence on the subject of an Underlying of any Contract." Of course, platform rules are one thing and federal laws are another. The Block notes that Donald Trump Jr has advisory roles on both prediction platforms.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israelis “identify with the struggle” of Iranians, as widespread protests against the regime continued in the Islamic Republic.
The demonstrations kicked off last Sunday with shopkeepers staging a strike over economic concerns, but have since ballooned in size and scope.
Though not yet as large as anti-regime protests of earlier years, the demonstrations came in the wake of Israeli and US attacks in June that severely weakened Iran’s military, and as renewed sanctions have battered the country’s already crippled economy.
At the start of his weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that during his summit last week with US President Donald Trump in Florida, the pair discussed Iran in depth.
“We reiterated our shared position of zero [uranium] enrichment on the one hand, and the need to remove the 400 kilograms of enriched material from Iran and to subject the sites to strict and genuine oversight,” he said.

Decision paves way for illegal settlers to return to outpost evacuated under 2005 disengagement.
Israel has approved the construction of 126 illegal settler housing units in the Sa-Nur settlement outpost in the northern occupied West Bank, which was evacuated in 2005 under Israel’s unilateral disengagement plan, Israeli media reported.
Channel 7 said the High Planning Council, which operates under Israel’s Civil Administration, approved a detailed plan that would allow illegal settlers to return to the Sa-Nur outpost.
Sa-Nur was evacuated in 2005 as part of the disengagement plan implemented by the government of then prime minister Ariel Sharon, which saw Israeli settlements and military bases removed from Gaza and four outposts in the northern occupied West Bank.
In March 2024, the Israeli parliament [Knesset] voted to repeal the disengagement law by passing legislation known as the "Cancellation of the Disengagement Law," reopening the door for illegal settlers to return to the evacuated areas.
Channel 7 reported that the newly approved plan is expected to take effect within about two months, clearing the way for settlers to re-establish a presence at Sa-Nur.
On December 23, far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich instructed the High Planning Council to convene to consider approval of the 126 housing units.
At the time, Israel’s public broadcaster KAN quoted Smotrich as saying the decision corrected what he described as a "historic injustice" and advanced the Zionist vision "on the ground."
Palestinian authorities have repeatedly called on the international community to pressure Israel to halt settlement construction in the occupied West Bank, which the United Nations considers illegal under international law.
Since Israel launched its genocide in Gaza on October 7, 2023, Palestinian officials say Israeli measures aimed at annexing the occupied West Bank have intensified, including home demolitions, forced displacement and settlement expansion.

How Israeli defense tech ended up in Venezuela’s hands - explainer - Israeli narrative
Before former president Hugo Chávez began distancing Venezuela from Washington and aligning with US and Israeli adversaries such as Iran, Venezuela maintained a defense relationship with Israel.
Israeli-made air-to-air missiles and targeting pods once used by Venezuela’s US-made fighter jets could have been turned against American forces in the recent operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Before former president Hugo Chávez began distancing Venezuela from Washington and aligning with US and Israeli adversaries such as Iran, Venezuela maintained a defense relationship with Israel. It had been a customer of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and other Israeli defense firms.
During that period, Rafael sold Python 4 heat-seeking air-to-air missiles to Venezuela. At the time, the system was considered more advanced than the American-made Sidewinder missiles.
These missiles were installed on Venezuela’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets, which were also outfitted with Rafael’s Litening targeting pod. The US Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps also use the system.
The Litening pod, which enhances a pilot’s ability to strike ground targets, could have assisted Venezuela if it had attempted to target nearby US military assets during the operation.
However, Venezuela’s defense capabilities have sharply deteriorated over the past two decades, largely due to sanctions imposed by the US and its allies. These restrictions made it increasingly difficult for Venezuela to operate and maintain its F-16s. Technical support from Rafael was also halted as a result.
According to foreign reports, only four of the 18 F-16s Venezuela purchased in the 1980s remain operational. The country has reportedly relied on black-market spare parts to keep them flying.
In 2006, Caracas was also forced to withdraw from service a land-based version of Rafael’s Barak 1 missile system. The system, acquired shortly beforehand, was intended to protect military installations from air attacks.
A year earlier, in 2005, the US blocked a $100 million deal to upgrade Venezuela’s F-16s. Israeli officials at the time suspected that Washington aimed to redirect the contract to Lockheed Martin, the aircraft’s original manufacturer.
A step to limit the military capabilities of Chávez
More broadly, however, the move was viewed as a step to limit Chavez's military capabilities. He died in 2013 and was succeeded by Maduro.
Following the breakdown in relations with the West, Venezuela increasingly turned to Russia for weapons. It acquired Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets, which are considered comparable to the F-16, as well as the Russian-made S-300 and SA-17 air defense systems.
The effectiveness of these systems has also come under question. Iranian and Syrian S-300 batteries, once regarded as a serious threat to Israel Air Force aircraft, were reportedly destroyed in the past year without causing losses. American forces also succeeded in neutralizing the Russian air defense systems deployed in Venezuela.
This development has further damaged the reputation of Russian-made weapons and has raised concerns for countries such as China, whose military systems are heavily based on Russian designs.

A Baby Jesus statue that was stolen from a Nativity scene outside a Long Island government building has been returned, Suffolk County police said Saturday.
In a statement posted on X, Suffolk County police announced, “The Baby Jesus statue that was reported stolen from a Nativity scene … has been returned,” and shared a photo showing the figure back in the manger between statues of Mary and Joseph.
The statue was taken from a Nativity scene displayed outside the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge sometime between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. County officials had publicly appealed for its return during a news conference earlier this week.
“To steal the Baby Jesus during Christmas, that’s not a cool thing to do … because that is definitely not in the spirit of Christmas,” Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said at the time. He also said the individual responsible would not face questioning, arrest, or charges if the statue was returned, offering forgiveness during the holiday season.
“If they bring him back to the building — we will just accept it — no questions asked,” he explained.
Police said the search for the statue involved extensive efforts, including the use of police dogs, according to News12.
“It almost seems, in a way, that the theft is trivial in nature, but it is an affront to Christianity,” Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said. “As a result of that, it certainly means something to us.”
After the statue was returned, Suffolk County police thanked the public for its “assistance and cooperation” in helping locate the missing figure.

Judge Convicted Of Helping Illegal Escape ICE Resigns, Faces 5 Years In Prison
A Milwaukee judge who was found guilty last month of obstructing federal agents by letting an illegal immigrant slip through a side door at her courthouse has resigned.
Judge Hannah Dugan, who was convicted last month on a federal felony charge, was charged by federal prosecutors after she distracted federal agents who were trying to arrest Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican citizen who had entered the United States illegally and was scheduled to appear before Dugan for a hearing in a state-level battery case.
The indictment, dated May 13, 2025, accused her of obstructing the law by assisting Floriz-Ruiz to evade arrest, and falsely advising ICE agents that they required a judicial warrant to arrest him.
Dugan was found guilty by a federal grand jury on Dec. 18, 2025 on one count of violating Section 1505 of Title 18 of the US code. Her resignation comes as GOP members of the Wisconsin State Legislature were preparing to impeach her and remove her from office following her conviction.
Democrat Gov. Tony Evers said his office had received her resignation letter and would move forward with filling the judicial vacancy. In her resignation letter addressed to Evers, Dugan said that during her years on the bench, she oversaw thousands of cases with "a commitment to treat all persons with dignity and respect, to act justly, deliberately and consistently, and to maintain a courtroom with the decorum and safety the public deserves." (as opposed to following the law, of course).
"As you know, I am the subject of unprecedented federal legal proceedings, which are far from concluded but which present immense and complex challenges that threaten the independence of our judiciary," the letter continues.
"I am pursuing this fight for myself and for our independent judiciary," she added.
Dugan, who has not been sentenced, faces up to five years in prison.
