Whether it be good or bad, calling something a conspiracy theory will get the curious interested in investigating that conspiracy theory.
The more people hear "conspiracy theory" they interpret "the corrupt government doesn't want you to look into that". It's a way to discredit to the stupid and lazy but to those who are naturally curious which is about 70-80% of the population, it will get them interested.
