An oil extraction plant in Dnipro was damaged in a Russian drone strike on Jan. 5, spilling about 300 tons of sunflower oil onto city streets, Mayor Borys Filatov said.
The spill forced the closure of the city's embankment to traffic for two to three days, Filatov said.
The facility reportedly belongs to Bunge, a U.S. agribusiness company based in St. Louis, Missouri, according to Filatov.
The mayor did not specify what the enterprise produced, but said it was a "civilian site."
"(Vladimir) Putin is targeting American business — striking U.S. investments in Ukraine and humiliating American interests," Andy Hunder, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, told the Kyiv Independent following the attack.
"This must stop. Washington must act to defend American business."
Bunge told the Kyiv Independent that the damage to part of its facility in Dnipro is still being assessed and that the company is working with local authorities to mitigate the impact.
"We can confirm that there were no injuries at the facility, and our immediate focus is on the safety of the people at the site and restoring operations," the spokesperson told the Kyiv Independent, adding that the company currently has no additional details on the consequences of the attack.
The damaged facility is reportedly an oil plant related to Oleina, one of Ukraine's largest brands of bottled sunflower oil.
The plant specializes in processing, refining, and bottling sunflower oil, according to the Ukrainian media outlet Liga.net.
The attack also damaged a car and a power line, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor Vladyslav Haivanenko said.
Local authorities reported no civilian casualties at the time of publication.

Sanctioned tanker hit in Ukrainian drone attack runs aground

A sanctioned tanker hit by Ukrainian air drones last month has run aground off the coast of Turkey.
The 115,300-dwt Qendil (built 2006) was attacked on 19 December, more than 2,000 km from the coast of Ukraine. Despite suspected engine damage, the tanker made its way to Aliaga, Turkey.
The Qendil, which was in ballast, ran aground off the holiday island of Bozcaada at the weekend while steaming from Aliaga to the major ship repair hub of Yalova, officials said.

Israeli military intelligence has assessed that Iran, in coordination with other hostile entities, is actively plotting to assassinate Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, according to a report by Israeli news outlet Walla.
The warning comes amid renewed negotiations between Israel and Syria, as well as escalating tensions in the region, including ongoing protests in Iran and Israel's military presence in Syrian border areas.
IDF evaluations indicate that al-Sharaa faces credible threats, prompting him to dedicate substantial resources to enhancing his personal security and consolidating his regime's stability.
In recent months, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and senior security officials have convened multiple discussions emphasizing the IDF's continued presence in Syria and the Mount Hermon buffer zone, drawing lessons from the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.
This deployment is described as a "primary shield" for Israeli communities along the border.
IDF policy divides operations in Syria into three zones: a frontline security zone along the Israeli-Syrian border for direct defense; a 15-kilometer-deep security zone in Syrian territory to prevent armed groups and terrorist infrastructure; and a wider influence zone extending from southern Suwayda to the outskirts of Damascus, monitored to block infiltrations, advanced weapons smuggling, or military base establishments.
The assessments praise former Israeli minister Ron Dermer for advocating against withdrawal from Syria in talks with the U.S. and other mediators.
A senior U.S. official reportedly expressed surprise to Israeli counterparts about why the IDF had not captured more Syrian territory, to which an Israeli official responded that Israel has no interest in governing local populations but aims to maintain a security buffer to protect its home front and support Druze communities in the Jabal al-Druze region.
This report follows earlier incidents, including foiled ISIS assassination plots against al-Sharaa in November 2025, which Syrian officials attributed to the terror group amid Syria's efforts to join a U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition.
Other reports from 2025 detailed thwarted attempts by former HTS members and potential Iranian-linked coups, though those were separate from the current IDF claims.

Sudanese army says it intercepted RSF drone attack on major dam

The Sudanese army reports it intercepted suicide drones launched by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces targeting the critical Merowe Dam and military sites in northern Sudan.
The attempted strike follows similar drone attacks in other regions as the conflict intensifies.
The Sudanese military announced on Monday that it successfully intercepted multiple suicide drones launched by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting the country's largest dam and key military installations in the north.
According to a statement from the army's 19th Infantry Division, the drones were aimed at its headquarters, the Merowe Dam, and the Merowe Air Base in Northern State.
Details of the Intercepted Attack
The army stated that "all the drones were shot down before reaching their targets" and affirmed its forces "are fully prepared to counter any threats" from the RSF.
There was no immediate comment from the rebel group. This incident follows similar drone attacks reported on Sunday targeting El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, and White Nile State in southern Sudan.
Sudanese authorities have repeatedly accused the RSF of using drone attacks to target civilian infrastructure, including power stations, though the group typically refrains from commenting on such allegations.

The attack underscores the escalating technological dimension of the war and the strategic targeting of critical national infrastructure.
The RSF controls most of the five-state Darfur region in western Sudan, while the army holds the majority of the country's other 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.

My defence minister would be a drone if I’m elected president, says Sowore

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in 2023, says he would prioritise drone technology over traditional military fighter jets if he becomes Nigeria’s president.
Speaking on Monday during his appearance on Morning Brief, a Channels Television programme, Sowore said drones would be effective in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and banditry.
“If I’m president of Nigeria, I’m not buying any jet anymore. I’m buying unmanned aerial vehicles. I want to invest in drones. They are pretty expensive, but they are more effective,” he said.
Sowore said drones provide better surveillance with fewer personnel, adding that drones can be deployed to track kidnappers and other criminals in difficult terrains.
“You can just have five persons operate ten drones. Even the drones that they buy for two thousand dollars, I have two of them, and they get seized all the time. They can cover a four-kilometre radius within twenty minutes,” Sowore said.
“If I have ten unmanned drones and operators, and I hear there is a kidnapper walking in the bush, I can use that drone to at least track them for a while, until the police can then conduct their cordon,” he said.
“If I’m president of Nigeria, I won’t have a minister of defence. My minister of defence would be a drone.”
He added that buying multiple drones for a state would significantly improve security, while investing in costly fighter jets that require lengthy training and complex maintenance is inefficient.
On his broader priorities, Sowore said his first focus would be to restore electricity supply across Nigeria.
“It would be a general awareness of dignity. For the first time, you would feel like you’re Nigerian. You’d feel like you’ve come to a country that has respect for you and people ready to work from day one,” he said.
“My priorities are many but one of the first ones is to turn on electricity in Nigeria. It would be my first priority because it would have impact on security.”

Rare footage of RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone emerges from Venezuela raid

Following the USA’s dramatic capture of deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, footage emerged apparently showing one of the Pentagon’s most-secretive aircraft supporting the mission.
Video circulating on social media shows what appears to be a Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) on final approach to an undisclosed airfield.
The flying-wing jet is silhouetted against the orange sky, with its wingtip anti-collision lights illuminated and tricycle landing gear extended.
A separate video apparently shows an RQ-170 flying directly over the photographer as the aircraft pulls into a climb.
In both cases, a blinking white strobe – significantly brighter than the anti-collision lights – is seen on the rear fuselage.
While the location of the footage is unconfirmed, the airfield could be Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Station on the US island of Puerto Rico.
Washington has surged assets to the previously shuttered base, including Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighters, as part of its Caribbean build-up.
Audio accompanying the RQ-170 footage further supports the Puerto Rico assessment.
The distinctive chirping sound of coqui frogs can be heard over the growl of a jet engine.
Those small tree frogs are endemic to the tropical forests of Puerto Rico – easily distinguishable from the desert landscape of Creech AFB in Nevada, which the US Air Force confirmed as home to the RQ-170 in 2009.
Citing anonymous government sources, The New York Times reported on 3 January that a “fleet of stealth drones flying secretly above” Venezuela helped the US Central Intelligence Agency collect detailed information about Maduro’s routines and monitor his travel patterns in the months leading up to the operation.
Little is known about the highly secretive Sentinel drones, which provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support to combat forces.
The USAF revealed the RQ-170’s existence in 2009 after unofficial images of the jet operating from a US air base in Afghanistan began circulating online.
The Sentinel platform was again thrust into public view in 2011, when one of the jets crash-landed in Iran.
That RQ-170 was captured by Tehran, which is now believed to have employed an early version of GPS spoofing to bring down the aircraft inside Iranian territory with minimal damage.
Iran subsequently claimed that it reverse-engineered the captured Sentinel to support the country’s own indigenous UAV development efforts.
A 2009 USAF fact sheet, since taken down, described the RQ-170 as a low-observable platform uniquely suited for supporting missions like the Maduro raid, which required precise real-time information on the whereabouts of the target and defences along the flight corridor.
“The RQ-170 will directly support combatant commander needs for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to locate targets,” the air force said at the time.
More than 150 military aircraft were involved in the raid on Caracas, officially dubbed Operation Absolute Resolve. That armada included bombers and strike fighters sent in ahead of the raid force to neutralise Venezuelan air defences.
Boeing MH-47Gs – the special operations variant of the Chinook – ferried an assault force of US Army commandos and law enforcement officers to the compound where Maduro was located.
The deposed head of state was then flown via helicopter to the USS Iwo Jima amphibious assault ship, which has been stationed off the coast of Venezuela since mid-2025.
Footage of the MH-47G assault force flying low over Caracas emerged on social media almost immediately after the operation began, even before Washington had claimed responsibility for the action.
