What we now know is not just that the American people were lied to, but how flagrantly it all went down.

The now infamous letter signed by “51 former intelligence officials” (known these days as the spies who lied) didn’t start organically. In other words, this wasn’t some good-faith warning to the public by high-ranking bigwigs who cared deeply about the truth. It was actually a coordinated political intervention. These high-ranking current and former intelligence officials, many with deep ties to the CIA, used their credibility to create a completely false narrative at the exact moment it could do the most damage to Donald Trump and save Joe Biden’s campaign.

It was an all hands on deck moment… and it was all a lie.

Trump Opens 2026 With Three Days of Airstrikes in Somalia

According to AFRICOM, the US bombed an ISIS affiliate in Puntland on January 1, January 2, and January 3

The US began the New Year with three straight days of airstrikes in Somalia, according to a press release from US Africa Command, as the Trump administration appears poised to continue its record-shattering bombing campaign in the country throughout 2026.

AFRICOM said in a press release on Monday that its forces launched airstrikes against the ISIS affiliate in Somalia’s northeastern Puntland region on January 1, January 2, and January 3. It’s unclear how many strikes were conducted each day, but the attacks bring the total for US airstrikes in Somalia this year to a bare minimum of three.

AFRICOM said the strikes were launched about 43 miles to the southeast of the Gulf of Aden port city of Bossasso and offered no other details about the attacks as it stopped sharing casualty estimates and assessments on potential civilian harm early last year. “Specific detail about units and assets will not be released to ensure continued operations security,” the command said.

The Puntland Counter-Terrorism Operations has not released a statement on its operations in recent days. The US-backed force occasionally details its operations or releases images of the bodies of dead people they claim are ISIS fighters they killed.

The Puntland forces are under the control of the local Puntland government, which withdrew from the federal system in 2024. The US also continues to back the Mogadishu-based Federal Government by launching airstrikes against al-Shabaab in southern Somalia. The most recent confirmed US strike targeting al-Shabaab was conducted on December 29, though according to Somali media, US forces took part in a helicopter raid in southern Somalia on Sunday.

According to Antiwar.com’s count, the US launched at least 128 airstrikes in Somalia in 2025, more than double the previous annual record of 63, which President Trump set in his first term in 2019. According to New America, an organization that tracks the air war, the airstrikes launched in 2025 are more than were conducted in Somalia during the administrations of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush combined. Despite the unprecedented bombing campaign, the US air war in Somalia receives virtually no media coverage in the US.

For [Paul Singer's] activist hedge fund Elliott Investment Management, Nicolás Maduro's swift exit comes at an auspicious time.

A U.S. judge in November backed a roughly $6 billion bid by Elliott for Citgo Petroleum, the refining firm owned by Venezuela's state-run company Petróleos de Venezuela, known as PdVSA, in a forced sale to satisfy creditors. Citgo, based in Houston, owns a U.S. network of refineries, pipelines and terminals that some analysts have said could be worth between $11 billion and $13 billion.

The deal was controversial in Venezuela. Maduro's government denounced the proposed sale as fraudulent. The board recognized by the U.S. government as the legitimate overseer of PdVSA's overseas oil assets vowed to fight to keep Citgo under Venezuelan control.

Less than two months after receiving the judge's endorsement, Elliott is looking at a more favorable—albeit chaotic—landscape. Maduro is being held in a New York jail. President Trump has sidelined the opposition, accused Venezuela of stealing American crude and said U.S. firms would be strongly involved in its oil industry.

Now, Elliott appears poised to reap the rewards of owning Venezuela's most valuable foreign oil asset. The regime change could lead to an increase in Venezuelan oil production, which would likely provide cheap feedstock to Citgo's Gulf Coast refineries and increase the company's value, analysts and refining experts said.

"Maduro is out, so a lot of the threat is out," said Jay Auslander, a litigator who represents sovereign interests and private-equity funds. "It looks like a potentially quite good deal that remains high risk."

Elliott isn't in the clear yet. The hedge fund still needs approval from the Treasury Department to conclude the deal. Plus, PdVSA and Venezuela have appealed the judicial sale.
