Internet blackouts recorded across Iran as protest death count said to reach 45

A nationwide internet blackout was reported in Iran on Thursday, online watchdog Netblocks says, as the death toll mounts from a crackdown by authorities after 12 days of economic protests.

“Live metrics show Iran is now in the midst of a nationwide internet blackout. The incident follows a series of escalating digital censorship measures targeting protests across the country and hinders the public’s right to communicate at a critical moment,” the group says in a statement on social media.

Saudis Launch New Strikes on South Yemen as Separatist Delegation ‘Disappears’ in Riyadh

Pro-Saudi factions seize key assets in Aden, expel separatist STC from government

Fighting between UAE-backed separatists and Saudi-backed forces in Southern Yemen seem to be further escalating today, with Saudi-brokered peace talks seemingly in ruins and Saudi forces carrying out heavy airstrikes against the separatist STC’s positions.

Indications are that the talks never actually got a chance to begin. The STC sent a delegation of some 50 people to Riyadh for the talks, and after their plane was delayed for three hours they arrived, were ushered onto a bus by Saudi officials, and were never seen again.

The STC is reporting that they have had no contact with their delegation since they were put on the bus, and all their phones were switched off. At the same time, Saudi warplanes started bombing the STC again, at the time when talks were nominally meant to just be getting underway.

The Yemeni “government,” which is a Saudi-backed faction that controls little of Yemen’s actual territory, used this opportunity to oust the STC entirely from their coalition government, and accused top STC leader Aidrous al-Zubaidi of fleeing rather than going to Riyadh as ordered.

It’s not clear what Zubaidi’s status is, but if he indeed didn’t go to Riyadh, that suggests that he’s still present within Yemen and not simply disappeared. Given what apparently happened to the rest of the delegation, it might well have been prudent for him to not attend.

Forces loyal to the “government” officials attacked more STC targets in the interim capital city of Aden. This included the airport and the presidential palace. Pro-Saudi forces also claimed the easternmost governorates of Hadhramaut and al-Mahra in offensives over the weekend, killing at least 80 STC fighters in the process.

With heavy Saudi warplane backing, the goal seems to be to prop up a non-separatist force with meaningful territory in south Yemen, though the Saudis have been trying to do this for over a decade with only intermittent success, and styling their faction as anything resembling the rightful government of Yemen means little in practice for a country that’s been torn apart and which they haven’t controlled significant territory within for years.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a letter to the court today admitting it has released only 12,285 documents out of more than 2 million potentially responsive to the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

What the DOJ says:

Over 400 lawyers across the Department are now dedicating "all or a substantial portion of their workday" to reviewing documents.

125 lawyers in the Southern District of New York.

Dozens more from offices in Florida.

100+ specially trained FBI document analysts assisting.

The materials include internal emails, FBI interview notes, draft charging documents, Bureau of Prisons materials, court filings, and "various forms of media."

The excuse:

The DOJ says documents "vary widely" in type and size, and victim privacy must be protected.

They've compiled a list of "hundreds of individuals" whose names should be redacted.

The bottom line:

Congress passed a law requiring transparency.

The deadline passed.

99% of the files remain unreleased.

Defense Minister Israel Katz on Thursday announced the approval of new government regulations providing for the confiscation of vehicles and equipment used for mass Palestinian trash burning in the West Bank, potentially causing respiratory harm.

Katz said that after he and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared the recent phenomenon of large-scale trash burning a national security threat on December 18, the Justice Ministry approved new regulations in line with their declaration.

The defense minister said that IDF Central Command Chief Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth will sign the final application of the new rules into law in the coming days.

UAE Allies In Yemen Lost Everything And Fled Country

Yemeni government forces affiliated with the Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) have taken over the key province of Aden with the United Arab Emirate’s top ally, Aidarus al-Zubaidi, head of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), fleeing the country.

The development marked the end of the conflict between the PLC and STC, and along with it the influence of the UAE in Yemen.

The conflict began all the way back on December 2, when the STC launched a military operation across the south of Yemen, beginning in the province Hadhramaut, which was then under the control of Yemeni government forces.

By December 9, the council forces had captured most of the regions comprising the six governorates of the former South Yemen, expanding control along the border with Saudi Arabia.

The kingdom responded on December 30 by hitting an Emirate arms shipment destined to the STC at Mukalla port in the province of Taiz, and demanding the withdrawal of all UAE forces from Yemen within 24 hours, in line with an earlier call from PLC head Rashad al-Alimi. Abu Dhabi responded by ordering a withdrawal on the same day.

On the orders of al-Alimi and with direct support from Saudi Arabia, Yemeni government forces launched a counterattack on January 2.

By January 4, all of Hadhramaut was once again under government control, and on January 7, the forces began to enter Aden. Before the end of the day, the forces were reported to be in full control of all districts of the province, including Aden International Airport and the presidential palace.

54 violent transnational gang members, affiliates arrested in NYC in Operation Salvo: DHS

"If you think you can harm an individual, a citizen of the United States, or a law enforcement officer, we will find you and bring you to justice."

In a press conference on Thursday morning, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that since Operation Salvo began in New York City, authorities have arrested 54 people who are "violent transnational gang members and affiliates associated with Trinitarios."

She noted that the operation was launched after an off-duty US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agent and his friend were attacked in a park in the city. "These two criminals came and attempted to rob them, and it ended up where they bravely fought back. This officer defended himself and his friend, but not before being shot in the face and in the arm by one of these criminals."

She criticized the Biden administration for letting these two people into the country, saying that "those individuals have been brought to justice, but those individuals would have never been in this country if they hadn’t been allowed in by the Biden administration, when they ignored our federal laws and allowed them to come in illegally." She said the two attackers "had long criminal rap sheets and were released by the Biden administration and continued to be released by leaders in this city to perpetuate crimes against the citizens that live here."

She said that the officer who was injured "doesn’t seek public attention. He wishes to remain anonymous, but he had a distinguished career and a legacy of service, and continues to do so, but his life was forever altered by this heinous crime."

During the investigation, she said, it was revealed that the two criminals were affiliated with the "notorious Trinitarios terrorist gang," and "we began to target every single last person that is affiliated with them and recognized that they needed to be brought to justice. The American people deserve dignity, they deserve justice, and we deliver both."

In response, Operation Salvo was launched in coordination between federal agencies, federal prosecutors, and the New York County District Attorney’s Office. "We've arrested 54 individuals as a part of Operation Salvo since its inception just a few months ago. Those arrested are violent transnational gang members and affiliates associated with Trinitarios who are responsible for weapons trafficking, for human smuggling, for narcotics distribution, and for armed robberies. They had perpetuated previous violent attacks across the city of New York City."

She said that many have been removed from the country, and "over 60 percent of them have been returned back to their home countries to face justice for their crimes there as well."
