Another hit to Putin’s shadow fleet: Russian tanker damaged in drone strike

January 8, 2026

Tensions at sea are once again drawing global attention as a new incident involving a Russian-linked oil tanker unfolds.

The development comes amid an already volatile backdrop of naval seizures, sanctions enforcement and warnings of wider escalation.

Black Sea incident

Another oil tanker believed to be part of Vladimir Putin’s so-called shadow fleet was reportedly struck by a suspected drone in the Black Sea.

The Palau-flagged tanker Elbus was seen with smoke rising from its deck around 30 miles off the Turkish coast, according to local reports.

The vessel, which was known as Euroleader until last year, issued a distress call before abruptly changing course toward Turkish waters.

Turkish coastguard teams later towed the tanker to the port of İnebolu for inspection.

Conflicting accounts

No injuries among the crew were reported. The tanker was en route to the Russian port of Novorossiysk, where it was expected to load crude oil.

Turkish broadcaster NTV reported: “The Elbus oil tanker, sailing approximately 30 miles off the coast of Abana district in Kastamonu, was hit in its upper sections during a drone attack.

Following a distress call from the ship, which is believed to have been the target of a drone attack, Coast Guard Command teams were dispatched to the area.”

Vessel background

The Elbus was built in 2005 and has a deadweight of 159,062 tonnes. It is not currently sanctioned by Western governments, according to available data.

Although flagged in Palau, the tanker is reportedly registered to a Hong Kong-based company.

It had sailed from Singapore and passed through the Bosphorus Strait days before the incident.

Wider context

The suspected attack comes just hours after the United States, with British support, seized the Russian-linked tanker Marinera in the North Atlantic.

That operation was carried out over alleged violations of sanctions related to Venezuela.

The Elbus is the fifth tanker to be hit in the Black Sea since November, in what analysts describe as part of Ukraine’s efforts to disrupt Russia’s ability to generate revenue from oil exports used to fund its war.

Russian drone incursions into Turkish airspace 'not accidental': Former Turkish diplomat

January 08, 2026 04:48 PM GMT+03:00

The incidents involving violations of Turkish airspace by Russian drones were not isolated, with several confirmed cases indicating they were not accidental, Sinan Ulgen, director of the Center for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies (EDAM), said in an interview with the National News Agency of Ukraine, Ukrinform.

"I don't think these are accidental, because they started to happen suddenly, and not just one, but at least right now, there are three or four confirmed sightings of these drones violating Turkish airspace.

So, if it had been one, we could have talked about it being accidental, but the timing and the frequency tell us that this is not accidental," Ulgen said.

'Türkiye should warn Russia'

The former Turkish diplomat also said that Ankara should first of all warn Russia that such behavior is unacceptable.

"Türkiye should also, in parallel, devise novel ways to potentially counter this sort of hybrid threat. Because right now, the traditional response of having a fighter jet use multi-million dollar ammunition to down a $5,000 or $10,000 drone does not make sense," Ulgen noted.

According to him, Türkiye needs a certain degree of creativity to develop its means of defense against drones.

In December, the Turkish Air Force shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over the Black Sea that was approaching Turkish airspace using an F-16 fighter jet.

Later, in northwestern Türkiye, in Kocaeli province, which borders Istanbul province, a Russian Orlan-10 drone was found.

Subsequently, in western Türkiye, an unmanned aerial vehicle crashed into a vacant lot in Balikesir province.

Türkiye ready to lead naval dimension of Ukraine security guarantees

Ulgen added that Türkiye is ready to take leadership in the naval dimension of security guarantees for Ukraine, saying:

"This is understandable, considering its position and the fact that it implements the provisions of the Montreux Convention. And it is also ready to contribute to the air dimension through air patrol capabilities."

He noted there are no particular discussions about deploying Turkish soldiers on Ukrainian territory, adding that negotiations are "somewhat unclear" regarding who will be ready, under what conditions, and whether this will happen before or after a settlement.

"However, in general, Türkiye is ready to make its contribution to this package of security guarantees, primarily through the naval and air dimensions," he said.

>>24092611

Ulgen also emphasized that Black Sea security will require a new approach, but it cannot be separated from the discussion of European security and Ukraine's security guarantees.

"If we as an international community really get a reliable package of future security guarantees for Ukraine, there will be a Black Sea dimension in it. In any case," he added.

He said Ukraine and Türkiye need to discuss the details of the naval dimension of security guarantees, including what Türkiye is ready to do, under what conditions, with what capabilities, and what the possible conditions of engagement might be.

S-400: 'Best solution is to return them and get money from Russia'

Ulgen said from Türkiye's perspective, the best solution for the S-400 air defense systems is to return them and get the money from Russia.

"But I don't think this is very realistic. I don't think Russia will be ready to solve Türkiye's problem with the S-400. Even if this issue is being discussed again, according to the Bloomberg report, another solution is needed," he stated.

He said one solution would be to send these systems to a Turkish base located in one of the countries where Türkiye has a military presence, such as Libya or Qatar.

"But here the United States must meet halfway. Because now the US condition for lifting the sanctions that were applied due to the S-400 deal is for Türkiye to cease ownership of them.

So, returning the S-400 to Russia would fulfill this condition, but sending it to a Turkish base abroad does not fully meet it. But the US can show some flexibility and accept such an outcome," the former Turkish diplomat said.

He noted that a third possible option for Türkiye would be to destroy these systems, but "this is very difficult for the government. We need a face-saving formula."

'Only way to deal with Russia is to act from position of deterrence'

Regarding the broader European security situation, Ulgen said Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine demonstrated that the only way to deal with Russia is to act from a position of deterrence.

"And this is what European countries must strengthen. In my opinion, this is the only way to ensure security and stability in Europe in the coming years," he added, noting that European countries recognize the need to increase defense budgets and reduce strategic dependence on the United States, but this requires time and cannot happen overnight.

Türkiye's military capability is 'strategic leverage'

Ulgen finally noted that Ankara's military capability has become a strategic leverage in its relations with other European countries, saying: "Because Türkiye remains one of the most capable NATO partners in terms of military capabilities and deterrence potential.

If Europe continues to strengthen its defense capabilities, it will need Türkiye as part of the new European security architecture."

However, he noted there is also a negative side: "If the United States further distances itself from European security, this would also be bad for Türkiye, since U.S. credibility is extremely important for deterring Russia."

IDF detects failed rocket launch from Gaza, amid diplomatic moves toward phase 2 of truce

January 8, 2026 5:25 pm

The Israel Defense Forces said on Thursday that it detected a failed rocket launch from the area of Gaza City toward Israeli territory.

There were no reported casualties from the launch, a now-rare instance of attempted rocket fire into Israel. Prior to the war in Gaza, Hamas and other terror groups regularly fired rockets from the Gaza Strip at southern Israel.

The botched launch came as officials from Israel and other countries prepared on Thursday for the onset of the Gaza ceasefire’s second phase, which the US is planning to begin next week.

Phase two is meant to establish longer-term governance and security frameworks for the enclave. Meanwhile, instability persists in the Strip, which is divided between Israeli and Hamas control.

On Wednesday, the UN agency serving Palestinians, UNRWA, announced that it was letting hundreds of employees go due to a severe funding shortfall.

Even as phase two is set to begin, the rocket launch marked one of the latest tests of the shaky ceasefire that took effect on October 10. According to the military, the projectile fell inside Gaza, near a hospital. Hebrew media reported that the rocket fell near IDF outposts in the area.

The IDF said it carried out a targeted strike on the launch site, adding that it viewed any attempt by terror groups in Gaza to carry out attacks against Israeli forces or civilians with “great severity.”

Further highlighting the truce’s fragility, Hamas-affiliated Palestinian health authorities said two people, a woman and a boy, had been injured on Thursday in two separate shooting incidents by Israeli forces in southern and northern Gaza.

There was no immediate Israeli comment on the report.

Another IDF strike on Wednesday, targeting a “senior terrorist,” missed its mark, the Ynet news site reported, without citing sources.

According to the report, the military is investigating why the assassination attempt failed. The identity of the Hamas operative targeted in the strike remains unclear.

Two people were reportedly killed in the strike, which was carried out after Hamas operatives opened fire toward an area in the northern Gaza Strip where Israeli forces were operating.

On Wednesday, multiple sources told The Times of Israel that US President Donald Trump aims to begin the second phase of the ceasefire, even as the body of one slain Israeli hostage, Ran Gvili, remains held in Gaza.

Trump is set to announce the Board of Peace, which will supervise Gaza’s on-the-ground government.

>>24092676

Trump’s move comes as other key pieces of the ceasefire have yet to occur, such as Hamas’s disarmament, which the terror group has rejected, and the opening of the Rafah Border Crossing between Gaza and Egypt.

But Israel is demonstrating openness to the Board of Peace. On Thursday, President Isaac Herzog met former UN envoy to the Middle East Nikolay Mladenov, who is expected to serve as the board’s representative on the ground in Gaza, The Times of Israel learned.

Netanyahu will also be meeting Mladenov, according to Channel 14, which is close with the premier’s circle and staunchly supportive of him.

Spain seeks peacekeeping role in Gaza

Also Thursday, Spain signaled that it is ready to send troops to the Gaza Strip for peacekeeping “when the opportunity presents itself,” just as it is willing to deploy forces to Ukraine, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said.

“I will propose to parliament, when the opportunity presents itself, that we send peacekeeping troops to Palestine, once we can see how to advance this task of pacification,” he told a gathering of Spanish ambassadors in Madrid.

“Of course, we have not forgotten Palestine and the Gaza Strip… Spain must actively participate in rebuilding hope in Palestine. The situation there remains intolerable.”

The Spanish government, which recognized a Palestinian state in 2024, has been one of Europe’s most vocal critics of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, launched following the terror group’s onslaught in southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

Israel has opposed another harsh critic, Turkey, playing a role on the ground in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees said that a “dire” financial crisis had forced it to fire hundreds of Gazan staff who had left the territory.

“On Tuesday, 571 local UNRWA staff, outside Gaza, were informed that they were being separated from the agency with immediate effect,” a spokesperson told AFP in an email.

For more than seven decades, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees has provided aid and assistance to Palestinian refugees across Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.

Israel has long been a harsh critic of the agency and has alleged ties between its staff and terror groups, including employees who took part in the October 7 atrocities. The government passed legislation barring UNRWA from Israel and curtailing its work in Gaza and the West Bank.

The agency has seen the voluntary contributions it relies on dwindle as it has become the focus of that criticism, causing what the spokesperson called an “unprecedented financial crisis.”

While the work UNRWA was mandated to do cost around $880 million in 2025, the agency received only around $570 million in contributions, the spokesperson said.

“As things stand, we expect a substantial shortfall in 2026,” they added.

The spokesperson stressed that UNRWA, which has seen more than 300 of its employees killed in Gaza since the start of the war, still had around 12,000 staff working inside the territory.

All of the staff affected by this week’s announcement had originally worked in the Gaza Strip, but had managed to leave early in the war.

Most had been unable to carry out their duties remotely since leaving Gaza, but had remained on UNRWA’s payroll until last March, when they were placed on exceptional unpaid leave, the spokesperson said.

“The affected staff have been without pay for over 10 months, and it is impossible to foresee when or if they could resume their duties due to circumstances entirely beyond UNRWA’s control,” the spokesperson said.

Hamas on Wednesday slammed the decision as “unjust and a violation of the fundamental rights of these employees.”

“We call on UNRWA… to assume its role and responsibilities towards the Palestinian people and its employees,” it added.

Thermal drone cameras keep track of rogue elephant

UPDATED: January 8, 2026, 06:51 AM

Panic has spread across parts of West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand following a series of attacks by a rogue elephant, prompting the Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department to rely heavily on thermal drone cameras to monitor the animal’s movement and safeguard residents in vulnerable areas.

Under the directions of department secretary Abu Bakar Siddiqui, enhanced surveillance and rapid response measures have been rolled out in the Chaibasa and Kolhan forest divisions.

Special teams have been deployed in both forest divisions to maintain round-the-clock vigilance. Continuous tracking through thermal drone cameras is enabling officials to locate the elephant even during night hours and in dense forest patches.

Simultaneously, public announcements are being made in affected villages to alert residents about the animal’s movement. Torches and firecrackers have also been distributed to help people stay alert and discourage the elephant from straying into human habitations.

A Quick Response Team has been positioned to respond immediately if the elephant approaches populated areas. Since January 4, experts from West Bengal have been assisting the local administration in managing the situation and guiding efforts to push elephants away from settlements while minimising risk to human life and property.

In parallel, consultations were held on January 6, 2026, with Vanatara, Jamnagar, Gujarat, on the option of tranquilising and relocating the problematic elephant.

Further discussions took place on January 7 with Wildlife SOS and the Mobile Veterinary Unit from Keonjhar, Odisha, following which the MVU team reached Chaibasa the same evening.

A committee headed by the CCF Wildlife has been constituted and will camp at the affected location to take decisions based on field inputs and drone surveillance data. Monitoring through thermal drone cameras continues to be the key tool in assessing elephant movement.

Meanwhile, the process of providing ex-gratia relief and compensation to affected families has been initiated as per rules. Injured persons are undergoing treatment at hospitals.

Till now the elephant has killed 17 people in the last seven days in West Singhbhum district and has injured about a dozen others.

PLA drills target swarms of suicide drones – Taiwan’s front line of defence

Updated: 11:15pm, 8 Jan 2026

The People’s Liberation Army has released footage of exercises countering swarms of suicide drones, a key element of Taiwan’s asymmetric defence strategy.

Mainland state broadcaster CCTV showed a video on Sunday of a naval unit conducting anti-drone and uncrewed target drills as the PLA launched its 2026 training cycle.

During the drills, the “blue force”, acting as the adversary, deployed multiple suicide drones to simulate ultra-low-altitude penetration strikes against maritime targets.

In response, the “red force”, which usually represents the PLA, used ship-borne missiles and interception systems to neutralise the incoming swarm.

CCTV said the unit recreated battlefield environments incorporating multi-wave suicide drone attacks to simulate air strike scenarios and test the capabilities of its countermeasure equipment.

In an interview with CCTV, Colonel Jing Haoyu said the unit used “digital modelling to better leverage the blue force’s role in testing our equipment”.

The training did not specify who the hypothetical adversary was.

Suicide drones are a cornerstone of Taiwan’s asymmetric warfare strategy. By adopting tactics inspired by the armed conflict in Ukraine, Taiwan aims to leverage these systems to offset the conventional military advantages of a larger opposing force.

As part of that approach, Taiwan bought about 1,000 suicide drones from the United States in 2024.

In addition, the island has pursued a strategic collaboration between the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology – the island’s leading weapons research institution – and US defence company Kratos.

Together, they have modified the MQM-178 Firejet target drone into a high-speed, long-range suicide drone called “Chien Feng IV”.

The Firejet target drone has long been used for missile defence training in Taiwan.

The project focuses on converting the Firejet into a low-cost cruise missile designed for long-range precision strikes within mainland China, including major cities such as Shanghai.

This modified platform has been integrated with an advanced guidance system and a specialised warhead designed for high-precision strikes.

Suicide drones have played a major role in the Ukraine war, with both Russia and Ukraine using them for reconnaissance and precision strikes against armour, personnel and grounded aircraft.

Last June, Ukraine secretly smuggled drones into Russia and launched them from within Russia’s borders to conduct high-precision suicide attacks on strategic assets, including A-50 reconnaissance planes and Tu-95 long-range bombers parked on the tarmac.

The PLA has been monitoring the use of counter-drone technology on the battlefield and testing its strengths through regular exercises.

Beijing has doubled down on developing its uncrewed and counter-drone equipment, showing several non-missile counter-drone methods. Most analysts consider missile defence against suicide drones effective but too expensive.

During the Victory Day military parade in Beijing on September 3 last year, the PLA showcased its latest active-duty counter-drone equipment, including anti-drone artillery systems, high-energy laser systems and high-powered microwave weapons.

Beijing sees Taiwan as part of China to be reunited by force if necessary.

Most countries, including the US, do not recognise Taiwan as an independent state, but Washington is opposed to any attempt to take the self-ruled island by force and is committed to supplying it with weapons.

Alien Mummies or Ancient Humans Butchered And Sold By Grave-Robbing Conmen? WEAPONIZED : EPISODE #104

January 8, 2026

Anyone with an interest in any and all evidence related to alien species, non-human intelligence, or UFO/UAP is likely familiar with claims of mummified alien remains.

Proponents say the remains have been buried in South America for hundreds of years and have been conclusively examined and studied by scientists and medical experts - and are legit.

But many of the claims made are muddled at best, and persons involved in bringing the mummies forward have been caught fabricating evidence.

For the last few years, WEAPONIZED co-hosts Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp have followed the controversy, as reported in various news reports, but decided to leave the topic to those who have the expertise needed to formally investigate the claims and the mummies themselves.

If the three-fingered mummies turned out to be non-human or even extraterrestrial in origin, it would be a massively important finding that would boost the credibility of those who argue that non-human intelligence has been present on Earth for hundreds of years - maybe thousands.

So, bottom line: Are these mummies the real deal, or have the proponents engaged in ghoulish grave robbing and the surgical manipulation of long-dead, but very human, corpses?

An explorer and YouTube creator turned UFO investigator traveled to Brazil to take a deep dive into the claims and was, for a time, a believer, not a debunker.

His YouTube site, “Incredible History,” included a previous video entitled “Show Me the Mummies,” and his explosive new video, released just days ago, appears to blow the lid off of the mummy claims and the people who have promoted what some believe is a money-making scam - one linked to South American drug cartels.

Two esteemed academics have joined the conversation, and both make strong arguments that the two best-known mummies show clear evidence of tampering.

In this episode of WEAPONIZED, we speak with Will Brown who created the “Incredible History” YouTube channel, along with Dr. Dan Proctor, a biological anthropologist, and Michele Adams, a highly experienced radiologist who says she is an experiencer herself.

Both of these professionals are openly interested in ETs and non-human intelligence, but their precise criticisms of the mummy evidence made public so far have subjected the two PhDs to personal attacks and allegations that they are designated debunkers working on behalf of the deep state to muddy the waters.

Is there an assembly line somewhere in Peru where long-dead humans are being carved up and then re-arranged to look like three-fingered aliens?

And is there a flourishing black market where private collectors pay huge sums in order to obtain their very own “alien” mummy?

This WEAPONIZED episode includes a spirited discussion about where the mummy debate stands now and what it would take to confirm that the two most prominent mummy specimens are the real deal.

As the author of UFO of God and a regular presence across documentaries, television shows, and podcasts, his experiences—and the footage associated with them—have become a focal point for both belief and debate.

Recently, new attention has been drawn to a piece of UFO footage connected to the Bledsoe family after my friend and regular collaborator Peter Osborne took a closer look at it.

Peter comes from a technical art background and has spent many years enhancing, restoring, and analysing imagery and video.

His work isn’t about adding information that isn’t there, but about extracting what already exists in the data—clarifying structure, motion, and detail that is otherwise difficult or impossible to see.

While working with the Bledsoe family, Peter enhanced sections of their UFO footage, and what emerged on close inspection appeared to show structured forms—what some viewers have interpreted as numbers or symbols—within the orb itself.

Once this material surfaced, it quickly spread across social media and forums, igniting intense discussion, scepticism, excitement, and attempts at debunking.

Given the reaction, it felt essential to slow the conversation down and actually walk through the process. In this episode of the UAP Files Podcast, Peter joins me to explain exactly what he did, what tools were used, what wasn’t done, and what the footage does—and does not—show. Together, we look at the enhanced video, still frames, and the most common criticisms and counter-arguments that have emerged online.

This is not about asking you to accept a conclusion. It’s about transparency, method, and letting people see the work for themselves.

Whether you believe the footage is extraordinary, mundane, misinterpreted, or still unresolved, this conversation is about understanding how image enhancement works, where its limits are, and how easily narratives can form once imagery enters the public domain.

Colonel (ret.) Karl Nell on the History and Future of UAP Disclosure

Jan 7, 2026

One of the strongest and most insightful voices on UAP disclosure, Colonel (ret.) Karl Nell joined the Sol Foundation in Italy in the fall of 2025 to deliver this talk on the past, present, and possible future of efforts to secure US government disclosure of its knowledge of and interactions with UAP.

Col. Nell also presents and comments on a collection of declassified government and other records that provide some of the strongest evidence for the reality of the longstanding US government secrecy about UAP that many US cabinet officials and members of Congress now state exists.

'Mr Bean' Might Actually Be An Alien, Conspiracy Theory Suggests

January 8, 2026

For decades, Mr Bean has been one of the most recognisable characters in British television history. The tweed jacket, the Mini, the teddy bear, the complete lack of dialogue.

It all feels familiar. Comforting, even. But there’s a hidden detail about Mr Bean that many viewers either missed entirely or never questioned properly, and once you see it, it is hard to unsee.

The theory is simple, and surprisingly convincing. Mr Bean may not just be socially awkward or childlike. He may actually be an alien.

The clue has been there since the very first episode. Every instalment opens the same way. A beam of white light appears from the sky. Bean drops into the middle of a church, looking confused, as a choir sings in Latin.

The chant roughly translates to “Behold the man who is a bean.” There is no explanation, no follow-up, and no attempt to ground it in reality. In early episodes, that same beam even appears again at the end, lifting him away.

That is not a normal sitcom introduction. It looks far more like someone being transported to Earth.

For years, this detail was written off as surreal comedy. But fans began connecting the dots.

Bean doesn’t understand basic social behaviour, yet he solves problems in bizarrely logical ways.

He copies humans rather than instinctively relating to them. He wears the same clothes every day. He approaches the world like an outsider studying it.

What makes the theory more than just internet speculation is that Rowan Atkinson himself has acknowledged it, at least partially.

In interviews over the years, he has described Bean as having a “slightly alien aspect” to him. Not literally green and tentacled, but alien in the sense that he does not belong. He observes rather than participates.

More importantly, Atkinson once revealed that the writers seriously considered making the idea explicit.

In a 1993 appearance on a Danish talk show, Atkinson described a scrapped idea for a final episode.

In it, Bean drives down a country lane, spots a spaceship landing in a field, and approaches it. A door opens. A bright light appears. Another Mr Bean steps out.

Then another. And another. Eventually, dozens of identical Beans emerge, greeting him warmly before they all board the ship and leave together.

That ending was never filmed. But the fact it was discussed at all changes how the show is viewed. This was not a random fan theory. It was an idea that existed inside the writers’ room.

Years later, Mr Bean: The Animated Series quietly leaned into the concept.

One episode features Bean aboard a spacecraft surrounded by other beings who look just like him. It is played for laughs, but it feels deliberate. A wink to viewers who had been paying attention.

So is Mr Bean officially an alien? No. The original series never confirms it. There is no canonical reveal, no final explanation, no definitive answer. But the evidence is no longer accidental.

The imagery, the behaviour, the abandoned ending, and the animated follow-up all point in the same direction.

Mr Bean works because he feels foreign. He is not malicious. He is not stupid.

He is simply out of place. Whether you see him as an alien, an angel, or just a man utterly disconnected from social norms, one thing is clear.

The show wanted him to feel like someone who had been dropped into human life without instructions.

And for over 30 years, most of us never questioned where he came from.
