Former Conservative Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi has officially joined Reform UK, marking the most senior defection from the Conservative Party to Nigel Farage’s party to date.
The announcement was made at a press conference in London on Monday, January 12, 2026, where Zahawi declared that Britain is “drinking at the last chance saloon” and stated that “the team that will deliver for this nation will be the team that Nigel will put together”.
He also asserted that “Britain needs Nigel Farage as Prime Minister”.
Zahawi, who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer for two months in 2022 following Rishi Sunak’s resignation, previously led the UK’s vaccine programme during the pandemic.
He was forced to resign as Conservative Party chairman in 2023 after an ethics inquiry found he failed to disclose an HMRC tax investigation.
Zahawi’s defection follows a series of high-profile Conservative MPs and peers joining Reform UK, including Lord Malcolm Offord, who announced his switch to contest the 2026 Scottish Parliament elections.
The move is seen as a significant blow to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who has faced a string of defections to Farage’s right-wing party.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage welcomed Zahawi’s arrival, stating it dispels the notion that his party is a “one-man band”.
The Conservative Party responded by criticizing Zahawi as a “has-been politician looking for their next gravy train,” highlighting his past opposition to Farage’s policies, including a 2014 comment where he said he would be “frightened to live in a country” run by Farage.
