Dikulushi Mine: 2026 Copper & Silver Outlook in DRC

The Dikulushi Mine: A Strategic Asset in the Copper and Silver Mining Sector

Overview: The Importance of Dikulushi Mine in DRC’s Mining Landscape

Situated in the southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Dikulushi mine continues to be a strategic asset in the sector for both copper and silver extraction. As the global demand for critical metals intensifies on the cusp of 2026—driven by renewable energy, electric vehicles, and infrastructure expansion—Dikulushi is more than just a mine. It’s a linchpin in Africa’s mineral economy and a microcosm of the industry’s challenges and opportunities.

The sector’s importance is underpinned by its economic impact, technological advancement, and sustainability commitments, as copper and silver remain essential for electrical engineering, construction, manufacturing, and energy systems. Within the broader African landscape, the Dikulushi mine plays an important role in the local community, regional development, and the DRC’s overall mining output.

'Geological & Mineral Significance of Dikulushi Mine

The Dikulushi mine is situated within the Katanga copperbelt, a region renowned for being one of the world’s richest copper-producing regions. This region is primarily hosted in highly mineralized sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The ore bodies here include significant grades of copper sulfide ores alongside high-value silver deposits, making Dikulushi commercially attractive despite its relatively smaller scale compared to regional giants like Tenke Fungurume.

Copper: Essential for electrical engineering, manufacturing, and renewable energy.

Silver: Highly sought-after in electronics, solar panels, and chemical industries.

The mineral significance of Dikulushi lies in its ability to consistently provide rich grades of the targeted metals, supporting the DRC’s position as a crucial exporter and reinforcing the nation’s role within the global supply chain for these critical resources.

Historical Context & Operational Overview of Dikulushi Mine

The historical context of the Dikulushi mine reveals its pivotal role in both local and international mining. Originally operational under different entities, Dikulushi gained significant attention after its acquisition by Mawson West Limited in the early 2010s,followed by later ownership by a Chinese mining corporation.Throughout these transitions, the mine consistently adapted to industry trends and demands.

Katanga

Minerals found in Katanga include copper, cobalt, zinc, cassiterite (the chief source of metallic tin), manganese, coal, silver, cadmium, germanium (a brittle element used as a semiconductor), gold, palladium (a metallic element used as a catalyst and in alloys), uranium, and platinum. The region west of Lake Kivu contains cassiterite, columbotantalite, wolframite (a source of tungsten), beryl, gold, and monazite (a phosphate of the cerium metals and thorium). Lake Kivu also harbours vast reserves of methane, carbonic, and nitrogen natural gases. There are deposits of iron ore and gem-quality diamonds in south-central Congo, while the central regions are rich in industrial diamonds. In the northeast there are gold, coal, and iron-ore deposits; there are prospective deposits of gold, monazite, and diamonds in the northwestern regions as well. Coastal Congo contains bauxite, gold, and offshore deposits of petroleum. The limestone deposits that occur throughout the country are considered to be among the richest in Africa.

France Is Trying To Keep Ukraine From Buying US Weapons With $100 Billion EU Loan

by Paul Serran Jan. 13, 2026

Failing Macron wants Zelensky to buy European weapons with the money the EU lent him.

The highly unpopular French President Emmanuel Macron is pressuring to stop Ukraine from buying American weapons with the $100 billion EU loan.

He wants the funds to be spent only in the European defense industry.

The Telegraph reported:

“Emmanuel Macron, the French president, has long argued that the bloc’s support for Ukraine should be used to bolster the Continent’s arms manufacturers and promote defense independence from the United States.

But Germany and the Netherlands said this approach would impede the delivery of weapons key to Kyiv’s defense, including American-made Patriot air-defense systems.”

EU countries and the European Commission are arguing over the details of the loan that favors weapon deliveries since it was thought that Russia was not going to stop fighting.

Two-thirds of the $100 billion will be spent on weaponry, with the rest filling Kiev’s budget black hole.

“Both Germany and the Netherlands have argued that those conditions are too strict and an EU diplomat told The Telegraph that the Commission had ‘listened way too much to Paris’ and ‘angered many’ with its stance.

Germany and the Netherlands – which both operate Patriot batteries and have donated them to Ukraine in the past – also argue that there are no alternatives available to the American-made system.”
