Was just re-reading this letter from AG Bonaparte to Teddy kek. Seems Congress was passing so much bureaucratic bullshit in the late 1800s-early 1900s (to benefit who, I wonder, cough cough?), and the anarchist/communist immigrants were causing so much havoc in the homeland (at whose behest, I wonder, cough cough?), that DOJ just had to have its own detective agency, away from the prying eyes of the USSS and Treasury Department.
