Official Start: The date May 23, 1845, marks the official beginning of the NYPD as a formal, organized entity.

Modelled After London: The department was influenced by London's Metropolitan Police, adopting a structured, almost military-style organization.

First of its Kind: It was the first large, public, full-time police force in the U.S., replacing earlier watchmen systems.

Early Changes: Despite its founding, disputes led to its replacement by a state-controlled force in 1857, with true professionalization arriving in the 1870s with Civil Service reforms.
