both the terms 'Hispanic' and 'White' are political terms in one sense. In that sense they are meaningless.
between respectful people those terms are used, and that's fine.

Hispanic is an American English term which loosely denotes where a person seems to be from.
Italians are mostly considered 'White' and are not 'undesirables', in fact the opposite of that.

They look Italian. Hence most would see them as 'White'.

People are people and loose labels like 'Hispanic' or 'White' or 'Jew' are used between friendly people to explain about each other. When they start being used as 'check box identification monikers' is is merely an attempt to haze and divide, or to descriminate.
For example Jews will not let a census ask the question if one is Jewish, but still many of hem are obsessed with categories and who is what.

And PS: some of those Italian who identify as Venezuelans and came to America could very well also be Jews.

someone who is dedicated to the idea of 'equality' usually fairs a lot better when they understand that the concepts of Race and Ethnicity often are used by broken people as justification for their bad behavior.
when on is dedicated to not behaving like a racial hater one must understand that it's an idea that many will not share.
and if you go into the 'wrong area' where there is a very strong presence of a particular crowd, and those people are known to hold grudges against other 'groups' one is a fool if one doesn't understand that just because you believe in equality that they will give you a pass. "I'm not a racist. I can go into this bar even though you say it's a bar for Black people. Why are you such a racist?"
