A Stephens County, Georgia man says a sheriff’s deputy took the keys to his truck and handed the vehicle to someone else based only on her claim that it was hers. Records reportedly showed the 2008 Chevrolet Colorado was registered to Mr. Lawrence, yet he was left without transportation and later had to pursue court paperwork to get the truck returned. The incident raises questions about deputies inserting themselves into what appears to be a civil dispute without verifying ownership through a basic plate or VIN check. A federal lawsuit was filed on May 6, 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia naming Deputy Harris, Deputy Harrison, and the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, and the case is ongoing.
