Many old world calendars start with Monday as being the first day of the week, and Sunday being the last. "The weekend" still refers to Saturday and Sunday, even though Sunday was changed to the first day of the week on current calendars.

They're getting off easy and only getting sent back to their home country, rather than serving jail sentence then getting deported. This behavior is common in most every country around the world.
