Ghislaine Maxwell to Testify Before House Oversight Committee Next Month

House Oversight Chairman James Comer confirmed Wednesday that Ghislaine Maxwell will be deposed by the committee on February 9 in connection with its investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.

Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year federal sentence in Texas for her role in procuring women for Epstein’s sex-trafficking operation, had not previously been expected to cooperate.

Comer had earlier indicated that the committee would not pursue an in-person interview, and Maxwell’s attorneys have said she would invoke the Fifth Amendment if questioned.

The deposition will be conducted remotely.

The Oversight Committee first issued a subpoena to Maxwell last July during the early stages of its investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.

Fraud Is 'Fundamental' Part Of Child Transgender Medical Field

One of the architects of the Health and Human Services (HHS) review of medical interventions for pediatric gender dysphoria said in a recent interview that fraud is an integral part of the transgender medical field.

​Nearly a year after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to protect “children from chemical and surgical mutilation,” Leor Sapir, who assembled a team of experts to produce the HHS review, emphasized that doctors relying on unproven gender-affirming guidelines are misleading patients.

​Sapir, an HHS report author and senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, told The Epoch Times there is no solid evidence that puberty blockers, hormones, or surgery benefit children who reject their sexual identity, but that evidence exists that these procedures can cause harm.

​The 409-page HHS report states that psychotherapy, rather than unproven medical interventions, has greater benefits for children with gender dysphoria, reinforcing the need for evidence-based approaches.

“Fraud is not just a feature, or, I should say, it’s not just something that happens in this field. It’s almost fundamental to the field itself,” Sapir said during an interview with American Thought Leader host Jan Jekielek that aired Jan. 15.

​Sapir said that doctors and organizations often rely on guidelines from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), which he describes as an activist group that presents itself as a medical organization. The group is key in influencing current practice.

​WPATH doesn’t advocate for mental health assessments and helps make sure that the procedures are covered by insurance, he said.

​An Alabama lawsuit involving WPATH disclosed internal documents indicating that WPATH withheld negative findings about treatments for transitioning children, he added.

​Groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics, WPATH, and The Endocrine Society cite one another’s guidelines as evidence that the treatments are safe, he said.

Three Palestinian journalists, one of them a contributor to the French news agency AFP, were killed Wednesday in an IDF strike in central Gaza. The military said its forces identified several suspects operating a drone linked to Hamas in an area that posed a threat to troops

Immediately after the identification, and in light of the danger, the IDF “carried out a targeted strike against the suspects who were operating the drone,” it said. According to the military, “the strike was carried out in accordance with the required chain of approvals.”

Palestinian sources said the strike hit a vehicle belonging to the Egyptian Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, near the American Hospital in central Gaza, in the al-Zahra area. Following the incident, Egypt lodged a strong protest with Israel and demanded clarifications. The case was reported by several international media outlets, including The New York Times.

According to Palestinian sources, the three journalists killed were Mohammed Salah Kashta, Abed al-Raouf Shaat and Anas Ranim. Abed al-Raouf had been employed by AFP since February 2024 but was not carrying out work for the news agency at the time of the strike. The last report he filed for AFP was on Monday.

Hamas said that “the targeting of a vehicle belonging to the Egyptian aid committee in central Gaza, in which three photojournalists were killed while carrying out their work in displacement camps, constitutes a war crime and a grave violation of the cease-fire agreement.” The group accused Israel of continuing attacks on civilians and aid facilities and called on mediators and guarantor countries, led by the United States, to intervene immediately to enforce the agreement and condemn Israel.

An eyewitness to the strike told AFP that the three journalists had been “using a drone to film the distribution of humanitarian aid by the Egyptian aid committee when a vehicle accompanying them was struck from the air.” Mahmoud Azzam, who was also present, said the area where the strike occurred “was considered safe and humanitarian.”

Mohammed Mansour, a spokesman for the Egyptian Committee for Aid to Gaza, said that “a vehicle belonging to the committee was attacked during a humanitarian mission,” described the strike as “a crime,” and said all vehicles belonging to the Egyptian body bear its logo.

This approach, which sidesteps typical oversight and policy processes, is highly controversial. But it suits Trump, who can use trusted allies to push his personalized, deal-based form of politics. It probably doesn’t hurt that, when it comes to controversial proposals like acquiring Greenland, it also keeps the naysayers at arm’s length.

Dans, who made his career as an investor in 1990s Russia, has embraced his role with gusto. Even before Trump returned to office, Dans organized a trip to Greenland for Donald Trump Jr. and the late conservative media figure Charlie Kirk, in a move that provided an early signal that Trump was serious about his desire to take the island from Denmark. Dans has been a fixture in Greenland policy ever since, through his frequent visits to the island (and the White House) as well as his constant stream of interviews with Greenlandic and foreign media.

Dans declined to comment for this article. Anna Kelly, a White House spokesperson, did not address Dans’ role but told RS that Trump “leads on all foreign policy.”

“He listens to input from a variety of members of his national security team, but ultimately makes the decision he feels is best for the American people,” Kelly said.

Part of Dans’ enthusiasm for his Greenland gig may stem from necessity. After failing to get a job in the early days of the second Trump administration — a roadblock that several sources linked to his involvement with the controversial Project 2025 — Dans had to blaze his own path.

The Greenland portfolio was a perfect fit. Few MAGA stalwarts could truly claim to know their way around the far north, and an establishment figure might hesitate to follow Trump’s instincts on a policy destined to antagonize NATO. But Dans had the background to deal with a complex Arctic issue — and the MAGA bona fides to prove that he wouldn’t back down from Trump’s fight. (Trump seemingly rewarded Dans in December, naming him the chairman of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, which advises Congress on scientific research in the far north.)

Still, the effort to acquire Greenland, especially through coercive measures, sits uneasily with some of Dans’ other foreign policy opinions.

Dans is, by all accounts, a skeptic of neoconservatives and their efforts to remake the world in America’s image, according to sources who have spoken to him about his views. And he’s popular among many right-wing restrainers, who consider him an intelligent and likable political operator. But he views Greenland as simply too important to America’s interests to avoid contemplating the use of military force. “He's basically a clear anti-interventionist,” said Curt Mills, the executive director of The American Conservative and an acquaintance of Dans’. “But he seems to have a special exception for this.”

This exception can sometimes make Dans sound like an unreconstructed hawk. “The current status quo is untenable, so things need to change, so they will change,” he told the BBC earlier this month. “Bottom line is, everything is on the table.”

Australian taxpayers are subsidising the Israel Defense Forces and illegal settlements in the West Bank via Australian charities.

Australian taxpayers are subsidising donations to Israel’s military and to organisations operating illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian Territories through a network of registered charities with deductible gift recipient (DGR) status, an MWM investigation has found.

Under Australia’s tax system, donations to DGR-endorsed charities reduce a donor’s taxable income, meaning the public indirectly contributes to the charity’s activities. Documents reviewed by MWM indicate that several Australian charities have raised and transferred funds to Israeli military units and to settlement-linked projects in occupied Palestinian territory.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, has

described the situation in Gaza as “the shame of our time”.

The death toll ranges from 71,500 to estimates of 680,000. Yesterday, a baby girl became the ninth child to die from cold weather in Gaza during ‘the ceasefire’ as Israeli aid restrictions continue. In December, Israel banned 37 International NGOs.

Concerns about tax-deductible charities supporting Israel’s military and illegal settlement expansion have been raised internationally. In a 2025 report, Albanese described faith-based charities as “key financial enablers of illegal projects” in occupied Palestinian territory, often benefiting from tax concessions abroad despite strict regulatory frameworks.

The report found that the Jewish National Fund and more than 20 affiliated entities fund settlement expansion and military-linked projects, while online platforms such as Israel Gives have enabled tax-deductible crowdfunding in more than 30 countries for Israeli military units and settlers since October 2023.

According to the report, Christian Zionist organisations in the United States, the Netherlands and elsewhere sent more than $US12.25m in 2023 to projects supporting settlements, including some linked to extremist settler groups.

The Jewish National Fund, Israel Gives and Christians for Israel all have subsidiaries in Australia that have been awarded DGR status.

ACNC registered charities Chai Charitable Foundation and United Israel Appeal have also raised funds to support the IDF.

The Chai Charitable Foundation

The Chai Charitable Foundation reported more than $19 million in revenue in 2024, with the vast majority of its funding directed overseas.

Registered with the ACNC in 2017, Chai says its purpose is

to alleviate poverty, distress and suffering in Australia and internationally.

In its 2024 financial report, the charity disclosed $15.39 million in grants and donations for use outside Australia, compared with $1.62 million domestically.

While the charity says it supports low-income families and “civilian victims of terror” in Israel, it has also hosted fundraising campaigns linked to organisations that openly provide equipment to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

One such campaign supports One People for Israel, founded in 2023 by Ari Briggs, an Australian-born man who emigrated to Israel. The organisation says it works directly with senior IDF logistics officials to deliver helmets, protective vests and other military equipment to Israeli soldiers. A letter dated October 14, 2023, from the IDF acknowledges (image above) that Briggs was supplying equipment to military units.

Police arrest 15-year-old boy over alleged antisemitism incident in St Kilda, Melbourne Australia

A teenage boy has been arrested over alleged antisemitic behaviour in St Kilda earlier this week.

Investigators have been told five teenage boys were returning home after night study at a local school and were standing on Glen Eira Road in St Kilda East about 9:50pm on Monday when a white ute drove past.

It's alleged the occupants of the vehicle yelled antisemitic abuse at the boys, including threatening to stab them and yelling "Heil Hitler" before almost hitting one of the boys as they fled across the road.

Police said the car, which was fitted with NSW registration plates, ran a red light as it continued to scour the streets for the boys.

Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested a 15-year-old boy yesterday in relation to the incident.

He has also being questioned over other offences, including aggravated burglary and vehicle theft.

Victoria Police said the investigation into the incident was ongoing and detectives were searching for a second teenager believed to have been involved.

Ramirez: As a Chicagoan, I know the terror that DHS can inflict with unlimited resources and unchecked power. You just saw some of that with what Congressman Magaziner just showed. Our constituents are being surveilled, they’re being threatened, they’re being tear gassed, and subjected to warrantless arrest, rammed with vehicles, they’re being kidnapped. And you’ve seen it, they’re also being disappeared. Yet, those, the— there are those in Congress who would still expand DHS’s budget and ICE capacity to enact Trump’s mass deportation agenda. And so I often get asked back in my district, how is this possible? How is it that they can behave this way? How can they tear gas a six month old baby? Isn’t Congress supposed to be a check on DHS?

Well, first I say to them that would require my Republican colleagues to agree that bringing senior ICE officials to testify before this committee is critical, and I do hear, Chairman, that that may happen in six weeks or so. I think it’s far too late. They should be here right now. Secondly, that would also suggest that DHS is behaving in ways outside its design. Now, let me be clear, DHS and ICE, it’s not rogue. Let me tell you why, because from its establishment, Congress empowered DHS to violate our rights under the pretense of securing our safety. Who feels safe right now under DHS? DHS was intentionally established with an overbroad mission and unchecked power, which has been expanded by Republicans with a blank check, unlimited personnel, and no guardrails whatsoever.

And Trump, with his authoritarian tendencies, is only making visible what so many communities have already known to be true. DHS is a threat to our collective safety and funding it only fuels our destruction and our human suffering. It’s why 32 people have died in detention in ICE’s deadliest year yet. US citizens are being shot and killed, and the agency doesn’t even know who they’re hiring and doesn’t seem to even care who they’re hiring. Yet, Trump’s campaign donors are profiting off the pain of our neighbors, including children, and so today I say enough.

I am introducing today the Melt ICE Act that would prohibit DHS from using funds to detain or monitor immigrants, effectively limiting ICE’s authority and ability to continue to cause pain and terror, while redirecting the funding that they have, taxpayer dollars that they’re using to kill us citizens, back into the communities impacted by ICE’s terror through wraparound services because we know that DHS is being used as a weapon to be pointed towards anyone the government considers a Public Enemy, and fascism always requires a Public Enemy. So, we must take the weapon away and hold those who have allowed our communities to be terrorized accountable.
