FCC takes aim at talk shows in fight over ‘equal time’ rules for politicians
The FCC says late-night talk shows, which would include “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” may not be exempt from providing equal airtime to opposing political candidates.
The agency questions whether talk show discussions qualify as “bona fide” news interviews, which have long received an exemption from enforcement of the equal time rule. ABC’s daytime “The View” may also get swept up by the change.
The guidance reflects increased FCC scrutiny of broadcast content since President Trump’s return to office.
