Kek, I hate squeezing past those tanks on the way to my seat.

 

Jets mostly emit CO2, and H2O, which instantly condenses in the frigid upper atmosphere upon being exhausted from the engine. Even car exhaust emits water. Ever see water dripping out of your tailpipe on your car? It's not some government conspiracy, it's a byproduct of fossil fuels.

On dry days (low relative humidity) yes. They are actually ice crystals which sublimate. On days with a higher relative humidity, they are not as easily absorbed, so they remain visible for much longer.
