Protest deaths top 36,500 as US fleet nears and Khamenei goes underground

January 25, 2026

Summary

Documents reviewed by Iran International’s Editorial Board put the Jan. 8-9 crackdown death toll at more than 36,500, in what it described as the deadliest two-day protest massacre in history.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has moved into a special underground shelter in Tehran after senior military and security officials assessed an increased risk of a potential US attack, two sources close to the government told Iran International.

Iranians are set to hold gatherings and marches on Saturday and Sunday across multiple countries, from Australia and Canada to Europe and the United States, in support of protests inside the country.

Iran's exiled Prince Reza Pahlavi announced he is ready to help bring about the removal of the Islamic Republic and bring this process to an end, a process that he said will lead to a secular democracy in Iran, if free elections can be held.

Several airlines including Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, and Swiss have canceled their Saturday flights to the Middle East including Israel, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, according to flight information published on airport websites.

The UN Human Rights Council on Friday overwhelmingly passed a resolution condemning what it described as an unprecedented violent crackdown by Iranian security forces on nationwide protests

Iran still killing, torturing detainees after protests

Iranian authorities are still carrying out a chain of crimes linked to the protest crackdown, including extrajudicial killings, deaths under torture and the systematic mistreatment of detainees and their families, according to the executive editor of Iran International TV.

Asghar Ramezanpour said the violence has not ended with the suppression of mass demonstrations, warning that detainees face ongoing threats to their lives, denial of medical treatment and collective detention in unconventional holding facilities.

He also cited systematic harassment of families of those killed or detained, as well as continued efforts by authorities to block information from reaching the public.

Ramezanpour’s comments followed the release of a new report estimating that at least 36,500 people were killed in the crackdown on protests, with the deadliest violence concentrated on January 8 and 9, according to classified government documents seen by Iran International.

Iran protest crackdown killed more than 36,500, classified documents show

More than 36,500 Iranians were killed by security forces during a nationwide crackdown on protests on January 8 and 9, according to classified government documents and other evidence reviewed by Iran International’s Editorial Board.

The figure, if confirmed, would make the crackdown the deadliest two-day massacre of protesters on record.

Iran International reviewed newly obtained classified reports from Iran’s security agencies, along with field reports and accounts from medical staff, witnesses and families of victims. In a previous statement on January 13, the outlet had reported at least 12,000 deaths.

According to the documents, security forces confronted demonstrators in more than 400 cities and towns, with over 4,000 sites of clashes reported nationwide.

Iran International also reported evidence suggesting that some detainees and wounded protesters were killed without trial.

Images from morgues and hospitals reviewed by the outlet show bodies with gunshot wounds to the head bearing signs of hospitalization, including attached medical tubes and monitoring equipment.

Doctors and nurses who spoke on condition of anonymity said some wounded patients were shot while under medical care.

Interior Ministry documents seen by Iran International showed the death toll rising from at least 27,500 in reports to parliament on January 21 to more than 36,500 in subsequent intelligence reports to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Independent verification remains impossible due to security restrictions and communication limits.

Iraq to select new leader as US piles pressure to curb Iranian influence

January 25, 2026

Iraq’s dominant Shia political alliance has nominated strongman former leader Nouri al-Maliki as prime minister in a step towards forming a government as the US puts intense pressure on the country to curb Iranian influence.

Iraq’s parliament will on Tuesday vote for a president, a largely ceremonial figure, who will in turn name the prime minister nominated by the Shia bloc.

It comes after months of negotiations in the wake of November’s legislative elections, when the Co-ordination Framework — a Shia parliamentary bloc that includes political parties as well as members of militias designated as terror groups by the US — won the largest share of seats.

The Co-ordination Framework’s controversial nomination of Maliki, who was accused of consolidating power and deepening sectarian divisions during his eight years of rule from 2006 to 2014, comes as US officials threaten penalties on Iraq if politicians do not exclude Iran-backed militias from the cabinet.

The threats include cutting off a supply of dollars sent for Iraq’s oil sales, according to people with knowledge of talks between US and Iraqi officials in recent weeks. The US has so far reserved judgment on Maliki’s nomination, according to Iraqi officials.

While he has historically balanced close ties with Tehran and Washington, it remains unclear if he will be able to continue doing so with the Trump administration’s more aggressive stance.

A majority of the Co-ordination Framework had supported Maliki, its secretary-general said. “We are committed to working with other national powers to form an effective and potent government,” he added.

Once appointed, the prime minister will have a month to form a government, a process typically marked by intense negotiations and horse-trading. But dissent within the Shia bloc, as well as opposition among Sunnis and Kurds, means there is no guarantee Maliki will succeed in establishing a government.

If he fails, the current prime minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani could be poised to make another attempt at the premiership.

The future prime minister will have to find a way to appease domestic allies and keep his coalition together while satisfying US demands that powerful Iran-backed militias like Asaib Ahl al-Haq (AAH), which have in recent years expanded their power in the state, be kept out of power.

Under Iraq’s sectarian power-sharing system, the prime minister is typically Shia, the president Kurd and the speaker of the parliament Sunni. Around 60 per cent of Iraq’s population is Shia.

Maliki served two terms during a fraught period following the US invasion, in which patronage networks and corruption flourished. He was also widely blamed for security failures that resulted in extremist group Isis’s rise to power and territorial advances.

What the Villarroel Results Surviving Independent Analysis Really Means

6:56 AM · Jan 24, 2026

Something huge just happened, and it didn’t come with sensation or drama. It came the way real science does, through replication.

Dr. Beatriz Villarroel has confirmed that two independent data analysts were given access to her team's transient datasets and independently reproduced the core results from two separate papers.

One of those analysts, Brian Doherty, has now documented his work publicly. The other, who replicated the association between transients and nuclear test windows, has chosen not to be named at this stage.

That tells you just how much stigma still surrounds this topic in astronomy, and highlights just how important the work of Beatriz and her team really is.

These replications are preliminary and not yet peer reviewed. That is an important note, and it should be said up front. But with that having been said the results held up when the original team was no longer running the analysis.

This is usually the point most controversial findings fail. This one didn't.

Doherty approached the data as an independent researcher with a background in statistical analysis and economics, not as someone embedded in the UAP world.

He re-ran the transient analysis from Villarroel and Bruel's 2025 Scientific Reports paper and confirmed a statistically significant increase in optical transients during nuclear test windows.

The result wasn't marginal. By his own documentation, it survived negative binomial regression and permutation testing with a p-value below 0.0001. In other words, the likelihood of it being random is extremely low.

He also validated the Earth shadow result from Villarroel et al.'s PASP paper. Honestly this part is easy to overlook, but it's just as important. The dataset shows a persistent deficit of transients when the observation geometry places them in Earth's shadow.

If these were instrumental artifacts, catalog errors, or background noise, you would not expect that kind of directional dependence. Yet it's there, and it persists under independent analysis.

Put those two results together and the easy dismissals fail.

It is also important to note that this does not tell us what the transients are or why nuclear tests correlate with them.

It also does not tell us whether there is intent, intelligence, or causation involved. Anyone jumping straight to conclusions is getting ahead of the data.

But it does tell us something very specific and very important, that there is something very real and not an artifact of one group's methodology or statistical choices.

Replication is the difference between a claim and a problem. This has now crossed that line.

It's also worth noting the tone Villarroel herself is taking. There's no victory lap or gloating here.

She's very clear that these replications are encouraging but preliminary, and she explicitly calls for further independent work, including peer-reviewed studies.

That's exactly what responsible scientists do when the implications are uncomfortable and the scrutiny will be knowingly intense.

And the implications are uncomfortable.

If optical transients in archival sky surveys correlate with nuclear activity and show directional behavior tied to Earth's shadow, then we are dealing with a phenomenon that has not been categorized before.

That doesn't mean it's exotic, it means that it's unexplained. Those are not the same thing, and confusing them is how discussions derail.

For decades, conversations around UAPs have been dominated by testimony, secrecy, and institutional silence. What makes this different is that none of that is required.

All that is needed here is old astronomical data, modern statistical tools, and results that keep surviving attempts to knock them down.

Replication doesn't end the debate, it starts it.

If additional independent teams reproduce these findings under peer review, then we need to be asking why it went unnoticed for so long, and why nuclear activity appears in the data at all.

That's when this topic becomes a legitimate scientific problem that institutions can't ignore.

For now, the most honest position isn't belief or disbelief. A result that survives independent replication has earned the right to be examined carefully.

This one just did. Kudos to Beatriz and her amazing team.
