President Xi of China has taken direct charge of the military, giving him unchallengeable control over all aspects of the state, amid claims that his most senior general was purged for leaking nuclear secrets to the United States.
Neither the Communist Party nor the People's Liberation Army (PLA) made any mention on Sunday of a potential replacement for the military's most senior general, Zhang Youxia, who was purged in a surprise announcement on Saturday afternoon.
