Top staff desert UK PM amid Epstein scandal fallout

https://www.rt.com/news/632219-uk-pm-office-disintegrates/

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s director of communications, Tim Allan, has quit amid the continuing fallout linking a senior Labour Party figure to disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Starmer has been severely damaged by his decision to appoint party colleague Peter Mandelson as the UK ambassador to the US, despite his known links to Epstein. Mandelson quit the diplomatic post last September and resigned from the Labour Party and the House of Lords after the latest batch of Epstein files was published last month.

Allan announced his resignation on Monday, a day after Starmer’s chief of staff quit, stating the move would allow the prime minister to build a “new team.”

“I have decided to stand down to allow a new No10 team to be built. I wish the PM and his team every success,” the now ex-comms director said in a statement. Allan, who served as an adviser to Tony Blair from 1992 to 1998, was tapped for his latest post at Downing Street last September. Continue…

Canada's largest public sector union 'angry and disgusted' over back-to-office mandate

https://www.rebelnews.com/canadas_largest_public_sector_union_angry_and_disgusted_over_back_to_office_mandate

Sharon DeSousa, president of PSAC, told Ottawa-area talk radio station Newstalk 580 she was “quite angry and disgusted” over the government's demand, claiming working conditions would be changed “without having the infrastructure in place to even house every single one of those workers.”

Canada's largest federal public sector union, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), has lodged a complaint against the government over a new directive aimed at increasing in-office work requirements.

The complaint comes after the Treasury Board made an announcement requiring executives in the public administration work onsite five days a week starting this coming May 4.

Other employees must be in office four days per week starting shortly after the Canada Day long weekend on July 6. The directive is another step towards pre-pandemic norms for public servants, adding an additional in-office workday on top of the previous requirements for executives and staff. Continue…

Five more police officers from the Toronto region have been suspended just days after seven Toronto cops and one retired officer were criminally charged by York Regional Police in connection with an ongoing organized crime and corruption investigation.

Two additional Toronto Police Service officers and three from Peel Regional Police have been suspended in connection with Project South, an ongoing investigation by the York Regional Police into serious crimes like murder, shootings, extortion, and drug trafficking, police have confirmed. The most recent suspensions increase the total of current and former police officers linked to the inquiry to 13.

York Regional Police announced last week that seven Toronto police officers and one retired officer from the service had been accused of illegally accessing information that was relayed to criminals. The investigation led to criminal charges against the officers and 19 other people.

Canada ‘Disappointed’ Jimmy Lai Given 20-year Sentence: Anand

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/canada-disappointed-jimmy-lai-given-20-year-sentence-anand-5982915?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=medium-1

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says Canada is disappointed that democracy activist Jimmy Lai has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong.

Lai, 78, is the founder of the now shuttered pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily and an outspoken critic of China’s communist regime. He was convicted in December 2025 on two counts of “conspiracy to collude with foreign forces” under the China-imposed national security law, and one count of “sedition” under a colonial-era sedition law, after pleading not guilty to all three charges.

“Canada is disappointed with the sentencing of pro-democracy media figure Jimmy Lai today in Hong Kong,” Anand wrote in a Feb. 9 statement.

“Mr. Lai is 78 years old and in poor health and we call for his immediate humanitarian release. Canada will continue to support free and independent media worldwide.” Continue…

Air Canada suspends flights to Cuba amid fuel crisis

https://financialpost.com/transportation/airlines/air-canada-suspends-flights-cuba-fuel-crisis

Air Canada is suspending service to Cuba as Canadian airlines make adjustments amid a fuel crisis in the Caribbean nation.

The airline said it would send empty flights to Cuba to retrieve the 3,000 customers already there and will tanker extra fuel on the trips to ensure enough fuel for the return flight.

The announcement comes after Cuban authorities warned landing aircraft may not be able to refuel.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been increasing pressure on Cuba with the aim of toppling the regime in Havana. Washington effectively cut off fuel shipments to the country from its top ally Venezuela in early January and Trump has since threatened tariffs on any nation that supplies Cuba with oil.

Air Canada typically makes 12 trips to Cuba from Toronto weekly, with another five trips per week from Montreal.

Monday it announced seasonal trips to Holguín and Santa Clara are cancelled for the rest of the season, while weekly trips to Cayo Coco and Veradero are suspended until at least May 1.

The aircraft will be redeployed to other destinations.

Several other Canadian airlines have made adjustments in light of the crisis in Cuba. Continue…
