Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, made the accusation after users complained that Chinese-language searches were effectively broken, overwhelmed by explicit content and illicit advertisements that made it difficult or impossible to find real-time news about protests and regional instability.
A similar tactic is deliberately deployed during periods of political unrest in China to suppress sensitive information and prevent citizens from accessing uncensored updates.

Ottawa has quietly removed nearly 1,900 companies from its official list of accredited indigenous suppliers after complaints that businesses falsely claimed indigenous ownership to secure millions of dollars in federal contracts.
According to a Commons inquiry response from Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty’s department, 1,881 contractors were struck from the Indigenous Business Directory, which had previously listed 2,925 verified suppliers.
Blacklock's Reporter says the removals followed reviews for ineligibility, non-responsiveness, or at the request of the businesses themselves.
“The list represents a snapshot in time and should not be relied upon to determine current eligibility,” the department said in its response, adding that companies can be delisted for failing to meet program requirements.

The intended targets reportedly included police officers, though further details on other individuals whose information was leaked has not been revealed.
The names of those charged, the precise nature or number of the charges, and the details as to how these alleged criminal organizations operated have not been released by authorities.

Vancouver police say charges against a B.C. physician accused of sexually assaulting two teenage girls were delayed because the suspect travelled to China during the investigation.
Investigators with the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) announced charges against Herman Hau Man Lee, 65, on Feb. 3, saying the doctor was arrested in November 2025 and has been released on bail with conditions.
Lee is accused of sexually assaulting two teen girls in separate incidents spanning from 2015 to 2022. Police believe there may be more victims and have urged them to come forward.
The investigation began in March 2023 after police learned that a 17-year-old was alleged to have been assaulted by the doctor over a number of years at a clinic in Chinatown. The incidents are said to have occurred between May 2018 and December 2022.
During the investigation, police say they identified a second victim, a 14-year-old girl, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by the physician at a Burnaby clinic in December 2015.

Jivani, who is a close friend and former university roommate of U.S. Vice-President JD Vance, had said a day before that he is travelling to Washington to help improve Canada-U.S. relations and advance trade talks, including on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA/CUSMA).
“Productive meetings today with the White House and State Department,” Jivani said on social media on Feb. 4. “More meetings with Senators, GM, and others this week.”
Jivani told the American outlet Semafor that he held unofficial meetings with Vance and his wife Usha Vance, as well as with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Feb. 4.
Jivani had said on Feb. 3 that helping Canada in trade relations with the United States is “not a partisan” issue, a sentiment in line with the Conservatives’ declared position that they want to help the Liberal government in trade talks.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he will abolish the electric vehicle mandate while replacing it with emissions regulations that he says will achieve a similar objective of reaching widespread EV adoption by consumers.
Carney announced on Feb. 5 that Ottawa will repeal the electric vehicle mandate that would have required automakers to produce and sell only electric vehicles by 2035. Instead, Carney said the government will put in place tougher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards for model years 2027 to 2032. The revised aim is to reach an EV adoption rate of 75 percent by 2035 and 90 percent by 2040.
“The more stringent emission standards will enable the government of Canada to repeal the electric vehicle accessibility standard,” Carney said in Vaughan, Ont., on Feb. 5.
Consumer incentives for EV purchases will also be returning. The government will introduce a five-year, $2.3 billion EV Affordability Program offering purchase incentives of up to $5,000 for battery electric and fuel-cell vehicles and up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrids. Incentives will apply to vehicles priced up to $50,000 from countries with free trade agreements, with no price cap for Canadian-made EVs and hybrids. Continue…

An Edmonton jury found Aaron Moore Minshull, whose mother is Indigenous, guilty of the July 18, 2020, “major sexual assault.” A Court of King’s Bench judge sentenced him to three years in prison.
“In deciding on this sentence, I have taken into account the mitigating factors regarding Mr. Moore (Minshull’s) rehabilitation efforts, his Indigenous heritage and his mental health struggles, along with the collateral consequences that will be visited on him and his new family by a lengthy prison sentence,” Justice Christopher D.
