Fun Fact: Frogs can’t survive the arctic winters, it’s too cold; but what if there was a way to die in the winter, and come back to life in the spring? Well, that’s exactly what the “Alaskan Wood Frog” does. Wood frogs freeze solid in the winter, and come back to life in the spring. It’s a phenomenon known as "suspended animation." They survive by letting up to 70% of their body water freeze, protected by special urea and glucose that act as antifreeze, stopping their heart and breathing until they thaw in spring.
When temperatures drop, special proteins cause blood to freeze, pulling water out of cells to prevent cellular rupture. The frog’s heart stops beating and it shows no brain activity. The liver floods the body with high concentrations of glucose (sugar) and urea, which act as cryoprotectants to prevent ice crystals from damaging tissues. In the spring, the frogs thaw from the inside out, their hearts restart, and they resume normal activity within a few days. This unique adaptation allows them to live further north than any other North American frog, including inside the Arctic Circle. There are limits, however. They can die if temperatures drop too low, or if they experience too many rapid freeze-thaw cycles.
