Hamas commander captured after attempting to flee south Gaza tunnel — IDF

A commander in Hamas’s East Rafah Battalion was captured after attempting to flee from a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip, the military says.
According to the IDF, the Hamas commander was among eight terror operatives who emerged from a tunnel overnight and were targeted in airstrikes.
Earlier, the IDF said that at least three of the operatives were killed in an airstrike.
“After scans by the troops in the area, one of the terrorists was arrested while trying to flee and hide,” the IDF says, adding that he is a “key commander” in Hamas’s East Rafah Battalion.
However, footage posted online purports to show that the Hamas commander was actually captured by members of the anti-Hamas Abu Shabab militia, which is based in the Rafah area. He was then reportedly handed over to the military.
The military says troops are continuing to scan the area for the other gunmen to “locate and eliminate” them.

Iran 'ready' for negotiations with America says country's top diplomat

Iran is 'ready' for negotiations with the US to resolve tensions between the two nations, the country's foreign minister announced on Friday.
The minister, Abbas Araghchi, said that while Iran was ready for 'fair and equitable' negotiations there are currently no concrete plans for talks with the United States - even as Tehran faces the threat of US military action in response to the killing of peaceful demonstrators and over possible mass executions.
Araghchi was speaking in Istanbul, where he had arrived earlier in the day for talks with Turkish officials. Ankara has been working to reduce tensions in the wider region following threats of a possible US military strike against Iran.
Araghchi told reporters during a joint news conference with a Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan that Iran has no plans to "meet with the Americans.”
He said: "We are ready for fair and equitable negotiations.
"For such negotiations, arrangements must first be made, both regarding the form of the talks and the location of the talks, and about the topic of the talks.”
"The Islamic Republic of Iran, just as it is ready for negotiations, it is also ready for war."
The Iranian regime cracked down on nationwide protests in January, which began as demonstrations against the country's economic woes but broadened into a challenge to the Islamic Republic's theocracy.
Activists say the crackdown has killed at least 6,479 people.
The US military has moved the USS Abraham Lincoln and several guided-missile destroyers into the Middle East, but it remains unclear whether President Donald Trump will decide to use force.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered during a telephone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier on Friday to act as a “facilitator” between Iran and the US, according to his office.
Turkey opposes a military intervention against Iran, warning that such an action would lead to regional instability.
Araghchi’s visit came a day after the EU agreed to list Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard as a “terrorist organisation” over Tehran’s bloody crackdown on protesters.
Araghchi on Wednesday posted on X that Iran's military is prepared “with their fingers on the trigger” to respond to any attack, whether by land, air, or sea.
He later, in another post on X, indirectly criticised the EU move against the Guard, saying that “several countries are presently attempting to avert the eruption of all-out war in our region. None of them are European.”
Despite promising to do so when in opposition, Labour have resisted calls to proscribe Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organisation, arguing it would not be conducive to the ongoing diplomacy in the region.

France behind Niger airport attack – leader

Niger’s transitional leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, has accused France and neighboring Benin and Ivory Coast of sponsoring a “cowardly attack” on the main international airport in the Sahel state’s capital early on Thursday.
Gunfire and explosions were reported near Diori Hamani International Airport around midnight before officials said the situation had been brought under control.
Some aircraft were reportedly damaged, but no serious civilian injuries were reported. Niger’s national broadcaster said a French national was among the suspects killed in the clashes and aired footage showing several bodies on the ground.
Speaking on state television after visiting Air Base 101, next to the airport in Niamey, Gen. Tchiani named French President Emmanuel Macron, Benin’s Patrice Talon, and Ivory Coast’s Alassane Ouattara as the alleged sponsors of the assault and vowed retaliation.
“We remind the sponsors of these mercenaries, notably Emmanuel Macron, Patrice Talon, and Alassane Ouattara, that we have heard them bark long enough; they should now get ready, in turn, to hear us roar,” the military leader said.

He praised Nigerien defense and security forces, and Russian troops stationed at the base, for their “swift response” in repelling the attack.
Russian forces have been deployed to the camp since 2024 after Niamey terminated a decade-old defense agreement with the US and demanded the withdrawal of roughly 1,000 American troops.
France, once the dominant external power in the Sahel, has steadily lost influence amid widespread frustration over insecurity, economic stagnation, and perceptions of foreign interference.
Niger’s military leaders, along with their allies in Mali and Burkina Faso, have forced French troops to withdraw from their territories, where they had been deployed to combat jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State.
The leaders of the Alliance of Sahel States have repeatedly accused Paris of failed counterinsurgency efforts and of seeking to undermine their governments by cooperating with rebel factions operating in border regions.
France, Benin, and Ivory Coast have yet to respond publicly to Tchiani’s latest accusations. Last June, Benin rejected similar claims that it was working with Western powers to harbor militants aimed at destabilizing Niger and the wider Sahel, calling the allegations “unfounded.”

Many Soldiers Dead After Terrorists’ Drone Attack on Nigerian Army Base Published 30 Jan 2026

Maiduguri, Borno state - Several soldiers are feared dead following a drone-assisted attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on a Nigerian Army base in Borno state.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, January 29, targeted the Sabon Gari military base in the northeastern part of the state.
A statement by the Nigerian military confirmed that the terrorists deployed armed drones and ground forces to raid the base, marking what officials described as a significant escalation in tactics by the insurgents.
Military spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Sani Uba, said the attackers stormed the base perimeter before dawn and briefly breached part of the facility.
According to him, the drone bombardment destroyed several military assets, including an excavator and a low-bed trailer, during the assault. He said troops, supported by reinforcements, eventually repelled the attackers and regained full control of the base.
Uba added that soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force were killed during the encounter, but did not disclose the exact number of casualties.
However, two security sources told Reuters that at least nine soldiers and two task force members were killed, while about 16 others sustained injuries. The military said troops were pursuing the fleeing militants after restoring control of the facility.
The incident marked the second reported attack on military formations in Borno state this week. Nigeria’s military has intensified operations against insurgent groups in the northeast as part of a renewed offensive.
Despite the operations, Boko Haram and its splinter faction, ISWAP, have continued to carry out large-scale attacks, taking advantage of difficult terrain, porous borders and weak state presence in parts of the region.
Borno state remains the epicentre of the 17-year-long insurgency, with frequent attacks on military targets and civilians.
Boko Haram ambushes soldiers Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Boko Haram terrorists ambushed soldiers in Borno state, resulting in seven deaths and 13 captives, including a commanding officer.
The troops engaged the terrorists in a fierce battle while on patrol in Damasak, struggling against overwhelming enemy forces. The military rescue team recovered the bodies of fallen soldiers but failed to locate captured troops amidst the ongoing crisis.

The discovery was made as troops sustained offensive operations across the volatile axis, further exposing the scale of casualties suffered by terrorist groups operating in the area.

PORT SUDAN: The city of El-Obeid in Sudan’s Kordofan region, largely encircled by paramilitary forces, was targeted by a drone attack on Friday that hit multiple government-linked facilities, several witnesses told AFP.
The drone strikes, which began early in the morning and lasted two hours, hit a military base, a police headquarters, the regional parliament and the premises of a telecoms company, witnesses said.
A military source told AFP that the army’s air defenses had intercepted 20 aerial targets.
Since April 2023, Sudan’s army has been waging a war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced millions more and created a grinding humanitarian crisis.
El-Obeid, located about 350 kilometers (220 miles) southwest of Khartoum, remains under army control after it managed to loosen a lengthy RSF siege last February.
The paramilitary force, however, has redoubled its efforts to take the city after forcing the army out of neighboring Darfur last year, cutting off most access routes in and out.
El-Obeid lies along a strategic route linking Darfur and Khartoum.
More than 88,000 have fled the Kordofan region since October.

A new, non-peer-reviewed report argues that Egypt’s Great Pyramid may be far older than the familiar Old Kingdom timeline, proposing an age in the order of tens of thousands of years.
The claim hinges on an “erosion clock” created by the removal of the pyramid’s casing stones in the medieval period, which would have exposed previously protected surfaces only in recent centuries.
If this new dating process is accurate, it would imply a deep-prehistory building phase, long before dynastic Egypt, followed by later renovation.
This bold re-dating has already jumped from preprint-style publication into popular coverage, with tabloid reporting repeating the most dramatic interpretation: that the Great Pyramid’s origins could point to an advanced “lost civilization” around 20,000 years ago.
What the New Study Actually Claims
The non-peer reviewed report, uploaded to Zenodo, is titled Preliminary Report on the Absolute Dating of the Khufu Pyramid Using the Relative Erosion Method (REM) and is authored by Italian engineer Alberto Donini.
It proposes the “Relative Erosion Method” (REM), comparing erosion on two limestone surfaces at the same location: one exposed since construction, and another exposed only since the outer casing was removed.
The logic is that if the younger-exposed surface shows a measurable amount of wear over ~675 years, the older-exposed surface’s wear could be scaled to estimate total exposure time.
Donini’s approach focuses on measurements at twelve points around the pyramid’s base.
In the report’s summary (as echoed by secondary coverage), the results vary widely by point, but an overall average is presented that clusters around roughly 25,000 years “before present,” with a probabilistic range extending from about 11,000 to nearly 39,000 years before present, according to Daily Mail reporting.
A key implication is not simply “older pyramid,” but “older core”: Khufu may have refurbished or re-attributed a pre-existing monument rather than initiating it from scratch.
That idea is explicitly framed as a possibility rather than a proven conclusion.
Why REM Is Controversial (and What It Would Need to Prove)
The reason the news of the claim has quickly hit the headlines is that erosion-based “absolute dating” sounds like a way to bypass historical texts and dynastic assumptions.
But the same thing that makes REM attractive also makes it fragile - erosion is not a simple stopwatch. Even sympathetic summaries note uncertainty from changing climate, sand coverage, tourist footfall, and modern pollution effects that may accelerate surface wear.
If those factors changed substantially over millennia, scaling 675 years of erosion up to 25,000 years can become a high-risk extrapolation.
Mainstream Egyptology, by contrast, rests on a broader web of evidence: archaeological context, quarrying and transport systems, and inscriptions associated with Khufu’s pyramid complex.
Ancient Origins has previously covered disputes where sensational re-datings were strongly rejected by Egyptian authorities, emphasizing that extraordinary claims need extraordinary documentation and transparent sampling protocols.
In practical terms, for REM (or any alternative chronology) to shift scholarly consensus, it would need independent replication, careful controls for micro-environment differences around the base, and cross-checks against other dating strategies, not just a single-model inference.
At the moment, even supportive write-ups describe Donini’s work as “preliminary” and “controversial,” which is a fair summary of its status, emphasizes La Brujula Verde.
Why the Great Pyramid Still Draws Radical Theories
Part of the reason radical timelines keep resurfacing is that the Great Pyramid is not only iconic, it is also technically strange.
Debates continue about how it was built, including a recent peer-reviewed proposal suggesting internal pulley-like systems and counterweights may have played a role, reframing interior corridors as engineering features rather than purely symbolic spaces.
At the same time, the pyramid’s interior still yields interpretive arguments, including geometric and symbolic readings of lesser-discussed spaces such as the subterranean chamber, which Ancient Origins has highlighted as a renewed area of debate.
So, while the “20,000-year pyramid” claim is far outside the current mainstream date, it lands in a cultural moment where people are already primed to ask whether conventional models fully explain construction methods, labor organization, and long-term site history.

She has conducted extensive research at physical and online archives and engaged in investigation and experimentation into this most perplexing field of study, including topics that are considered unorthodox by most serious UFO researchers.
Her premise is, "If we do not seek, we will not find." She is the primary author or coauthor of several books. Her bestseller with scientific ufologist and lecturer Stanton T. Friedman, MSc. (1934-2019) is Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience (second edition in 2021.).
They coauthored two additional books, Science Was Wrong and Fact, Fiction, and Flying Saucers. Her book with Denise Stoner The Alien Abduction Files includes her investigation of six inter-generational cases of ET contact.
Her fifth book Extraterrestrial Contact: What to do When You've Been Abducted is a comprehensive guide on UFO abduction phenomena and a self-help book for UFO abductees (published in French and English).
Her latest book is Forbidden Knowledge: A Personal Journey from Alien Abduction to Spiritual Transformation.
