Senate Funding Deal Collapses, Saturday Shutdown Looms.

The U.S. government is on the verge of a partial shutdown after the Senate’s planned vote on a funding deal stalled late Thursday. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and other Republican leaders had aimed to push the deal forward, but it faced opposition within their own ranks over what Republican senators characterize as leadership caving to Democrats on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) confirmed he placed a hold on the funding package, effectively blocking it from quick consideration. Graham expressed his dissatisfaction with the deal, stating, “This is a bad deal,” as he entered Thune’s office late Thursday evening.

Late Thursday, just before the Senate attempted to move the Democrat-backed funding deal, President Donald J. Without a funding agreement, a partial shutdown of federal operations is set to begin at 12:01 AM ET on Saturday. Apple buys secretive Israeli AI company Q.ai for $1.6 billion in biggest acquisition of its history

With the move, Apple aims to improve its access to AI technology, which has suffered recent setbacks, especially after several delays in deploying Apple Intelligence's full announced capabilities.

Apple acquired the Israeli AI start-up Q.ai in a deal reportedly worth $1.6 billion, making it the biggest acquisition in Apple’s history, according to reports by The Financial Times and Reuters on Thursday.

Q.ai was described by The FT as a “secretive Israeli start-up” that developed a technology capable of analyzing the “silent speech” made in facial expressions.

According to the report, people familiar with the matter said the deal would value the Israeli start-up at nearly $2 billion.

With the move, Apple aims to improve its access to AI technology, which has suffered recent setbacks, especially after several delays in deploying Apple Intelligence's full announced capabilities.

“Q.ai is a remarkable company that is pioneering new and creative ways to use imaging and machine learning,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice-president of hardware technologies, to The Financial Times.

“Q.ai has operated in stealth since its inception, hard at work collapsing the gap between human intent and digital execution,” wrote Tom Hulme, one of the heads at GV (formerly Google Ventures and one of the seed investors of Q.ai), in a blog post.

According to Hulme, Q.ai’s CEO, Aviad Maizels, has the unique distinction of having two of his companies sold to Apple: PrimeSense, the tech behind Kinect, which Apple acquired in November 2013.

The current technology developed by Q.ai is used in intelligent headphones and glasses to detect “facial micro movements,” allowing users to control the devices without performing excessive actions.

"Joining Apple opens extraordinary possibilities for pushing boundaries and realizing the full potential of what we’ve created, and we’re thrilled to bring these experiences to people everywhere,” Maizels said in a statement to Reuters.

Apple falls behind in AI race

On January 13, Apple announced a deal with Alphabet (Google's parent company) to integrate its Gemini AI system into Apple Intelligence software.

Senior ADL antisemitism researcher leaves to lead competing effort at watchdog Nexus

Founded in 2019, Nexus describes itself as an antisemitism watchdog that also seeks to defend democratic norms and free speech, and is fiscally sponsored by the New Israel Fund.

Aryeh Tuchman, a veteran antisemitism researcher who spent nearly two decades at the Anti-Defamation League, is joining the Nexus Project, a rival watchdog, to lead a new center devoted to researching antisemitism.

The move brings a senior figure from the country’s most prominent antisemitism watchdog to an organization that has repeatedly challenged the ADL’s approach to defining and responding to antisemitism, particularly in debates over Israel, campus activism, and political polarization.

The most recent example came last November, when Nexus publicly criticized the ADL for launching an initiative to “monitor” the administration of Zohran Mamdani for antisemitic bias following his election as New York City mayor. Nexus called the move “divisive, hyperbolic and aggressive,” warning that it risked deepening Jewish communal divisions and playing into far-right hands.

Tuchman to serve as director of Antisemitism Research

Nexus announced this week that Tuchman will serve as the inaugural director of its new Nexus Center for Antisemitism Research, which the organization says will focus on improving the quality, rigor, and nuance of research used by policymakers, Jewish institutions, and the public.

Tuchman has most recently worked as a senior leader in the ADL’s Center on Extremism, where he helped oversee research on antisemitic incidents, extremist movements, and conspiracy theories. He frequently served as a key methodological authority for the ADL’s annual audit of antisemitic incidents, an influential report widely cited in the media.

“I’ve spent my career trying to understand antisemitism in all its forms,” he said in an interview. “This is a chance to take everything I’ve learned and apply it in a new setting, with the hope of contributing something constructive to a very difficult moment.”

Nexus is known for challenging the ADL over how antisemitism should be defined. The group promotes the “Nexus Document,” a framework that seeks to distinguish antisemitism from most criticism of Israel while acknowledging that some anti-Israel rhetoric can target Jews as Jews. The ADL, by contrast, has strongly backed the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism, which has been widely adopted by governments and institutions but criticized by some scholars and civil liberties groups for blurring the line between antisemitism and political speech.

Nexus leaders rejected the idea that Tuchman’s move represents a rebuke of the ADL.

“If we really wanted to repudiate the ADL, it would be hard to argue that the best way to do that was to hire one of their senior researchers,” said Alan Solow, the chair of the Nexus Project’s board of directors. “Our intent wasn’t to make a statement about the ADL. Israeli Planes Are Spraying Syrian Farms Near The Front With Mysterious Chemicals (Videos)

An Israeli agricultural aircraft sprayed multiple farms in the southern Syrian governorate of al-Qunitra with unknown chemicals on January 30, in the third such incident in recent days.

The state-run SANA news agency reported that the Israeli aircraft sprayed a wide area from the town of Jabata al-Khashab to the town of al-Hamidiyah, passing through the town of al-Hurriya in the northern countryside of al-Quneitra. Videos of the incident later surfaced online.

On January 27, a similar substance was sprayed by Israeli aircraft over farms west of the town of Mazrat Abu Madhra and the town of al-Hanout in the southern Quneitra countryside. Two days prior, the forested areas, farms, and pastures in the towns of al-Ashah, Koudna, al-Asbah, and al-Rafid, also in the governorate southern countryside, were sprayed.

The Agriculture and Environment Directorates in Quneitra took samples from these farms for testing, according to the SANA.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Alabi also brought up the issue during a Security Council session on January 29.

“In the last few days, Israeli occupation aircraft have repeatedly sprayed unknown chemical substances on Syrian lands and forests. The question here is, are the occupation’s alleged security concerns about trees, pastures, and livestock? Doesn’t the occupation know that the dignity and livelihood of the Syrian people are no less important than their lives?” he said.

The Israeli military invaded the buffer zone adjacent to the occupied Golan Heights in al-Qunitra right after the fall of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad, and has since established a series of posts there, including atop of the strategic Mount Hermon.

The military has been also conducting operations in al-Qunitra, the neighboring governorates of Daraa and Rif Dimashq on a regular basis.

The chemicals being spread along the buffer zone are likely herbicides meant to prevent the growth of pushes that could obstacle surveillance.

The Israel military used the exact same tactic around Gaza before, with Palestinian media reporting long lasting damage to farms and scores of casualties.

Syria’s Islamist-led transitional government has been engaged in direct talks with Israel for around a year now. Recent reports indicate progress, with the Middle East Eye even saying that the United States is pressing both sides to sign a security agreement by March. Many issues are still stuck, however, as Syria wants the buffer zone back, and Israel is refusing to abound Mount Hermon.

Israel will not likely compromise. Its military is clearly planning for long term deployment in the buffer zone, as evidenced by its recent environmental control activities.

'World War Jew': How Israel's Antisemitism Conference Became a Far-right Populist Rally

For the right-wing populist political leaders who gathered in Jerusalem for the Netanyahu government's second International Conference on Combating Antisemitism this week, the formula for fighting Jew hatred is simple, according to Haaretz correspondent Linda Dayan, who attended and reported on the two-day event.

Organized by the Diaspora Affairs Ministry led by far-right Likud MK Amichai Chikli, Dayan tells the Haaretz Podcast that the message of the majority of prominent speakers at the conference is that Jews "have one enemy" – radical Islam – "and that enemy is propped up by the woke left" with a shared agenda of destroying the West.

Later on the podcast, Dayan – who has covered the protest movement in Israel for the return of the hostages led by their families since October 7th – reflected on the end of the struggle following the return of the final hostage's remains earlier this week and the end of the vigil in Tel Aviv's Hostage Square.

The movement, she said, transcended politics; it was a deeper fight to preserve the national ethos of never leaving anyone behind. Dayan explained: "From the very beginning, you would hear in the speeches in the square that this isn't just a battle to return our daughters and sons and parents and grandparents.

"This is a battle for the values of the country – a battle for the version of the country we want our children to grow up in and we want the next generation to inherit."

Sitting Judge and Three Others Charged with Scheme to Steal Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars from Vulnerable and Incapacitated Wards

DETROIT - Four Detroit-area residents, including a sitting judge and a local attorney, were charged for their roles in a years-long scheme to embezzle money from incapacitated individuals, United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. announced today.

Gorgon was joined in the announcement by Jennifer Runyan, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Detroit Field Office, and Karen Wingerd, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigations Detroit Field Office.

Nancy Williams, 59, Avery Bradley, 72, Andrea Bradley-Baskin, 46, and Dwight Rashad, 69, all Detroit residents, were charged via indictment with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The indictment also charges Bradley with one count of wire fraud, Bradley, Bradley-Baskin, and Rashad with several counts of money laundering, and Bradley-Baskin with a single count of making a false statement to federal law enforcement agent.

According to the indictment, probate courts regularly appoint guardians and conservators to manage the personal and financial affairs of adults, known as wards, who have been found by the court to lack the capacity to do so themselves. Guardians and conservators are fiduciaries who are obligated to act in the best interests of their wards. The indictment alleges that Nancy Williams owned Guardian and Associates, an agency that was appointed as a fiduciary by the Wayne County Probate Court for incapacitated wards in over 1,000 cases. Avery Bradley is an attorney, who, along with his daughter (and fellow attorney) Andrea Bradley-Baskin, operated a law firm that often represented Guardian and Associates in Wayne County Probate Court and otherwise practiced regularly in that court. Bradley-Baskin is currently a district judge on Michigan’s 36th District Court. Dwight Rashad operated a series of group homes and residential facilities for elderly individuals, including wards, who needed support and care.

Third Georgia State Representative charged with pandemic unemployment fraud

ATLANTA - Dexter L. Sharper, a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, was charged today with making false statements to fraudulently obtain thousands of dollars of emergency pandemic unemployment assistance payments.

“While many of his constituents and fellow citizens were losing jobs and desperately needed unemployment assistance during the pandemic, Representative Sharper allegedly pretended to be out of work to collect a share of unemployment benefits for himself,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “When government officials lie to take money, and do it while holding an elected office, it violates the trust of citizens and weakens faith in our elected government.”

“These charges point to some disgraceful conduct at the highest level, which should shock and repulse every citizen”, said Georgia State Inspector General Nigel Lange. “The alleged activities describe a disgusting abuse by an elected official who appeared to trade his integrity for money destined for those in need. Shameful.”

“Dexter L. Sharper, while serving as an elected member of the Georgia House of Representatives, is alleged to have unlawfully enriched himself by improperly obtaining taxpayer funds from the unemployment insurance program intended to assist American workers who lost their jobs through no fault of their own,” said Anthony P. D’Esposito, Inspector General, U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General. “These charges reflect allegations, and the case will be resolved through the judicial process. We will continue our efforts to investigate and pursue accountability for those who are charged with defrauding taxpayers by exploiting Department of Labor programs.”

“Nobody is above the law, including elected officials,” said FBI Atlanta Acting Special Agent in Charge Peter Ellis. “Those who violate the public trust and steal from taxpayers to fill their own pockets will be held accountable.”

According to U.S. Attorney Hertzberg, the charges, and other information presented in court: In 2020, in response to the forced closures of businesses and unprecedented economic hardship resulting from the COVID-19 emergency, the U.S. Congress created special unemployment compensation programs to provide cash assistance to individuals who lost their jobs due to the pandemic. Applicants had to provide a certification for every week for which they wished to claim benefits, attesting to whether they were actively seeking work for the week and the reason they were unemployed.

Sharper, while serving as the Georgia State Representative for District 177, which includes portions of Lowndes County, allegedly applied for unemployment assistance benefits for April 2020 through May 2021. In his initial application, he stated that he had only one employer, Dexter Sharper Party Rental, which had employed him for 40 hours per week for over seven years, but had not worked since March 13, 2020. Then, in 38 separate weekly certifications, he stated that had not worked or earned any wages, was actively looking for work, and had not refused any work.

Former TD Bank Employee Pleads Guilty to Accepting Bribes, Laundering $5.5 Million to Colombia

A Florida man pleaded guilty Wednesday to accepting bribes and facilitating the laundering of more than $5.5 million to Colombia while employed by TD Bank, N.A.

According to court filings, Leonardo Ayala, 25, of Homestead, Florida, accepted bribes and exploited his position as a bank employee to help launder drug money to Colombia. From June to Nov. 2023, Ayala opened fraudulent accounts, issued over 150 debit cards to shell companies, and unblocked debit cards that TD Bank had restricted due to questionable activity. The bank accounts and debit cards were then used to make more than 12,000 ATM withdrawals in Colombia, funneling approximately $5.5 million out of the United States. In exchange, Ayala received more than $6,000 in bribes paid in cash and through a peer-to-peer digital payment network.

Ayala pleaded guilty to a two-count information charging him with conspiring to launder monetary instruments and receipt of bribes by a bank employee. The charge of money laundering conspiracy carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. The charge of receipt of bribes by a bank employee carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison. Ayala’s sentencing has been set for June 11. A federal judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The DEA, IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) and FDIC-OIG are investigating the case. The department also thanks the Morristown Police Department for their assistance with the investigation.

Former Boston Children’s Hospital Anesthesiologist Sentenced to 22 Years in Prison for Child Exploitation Offenses

Defendant possessed child sexual abuse material of children as young as infants

BOSTON – A former pediatric cardiac anesthesiology fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital was sentenced yesterday to nearly two decades in prison for producing, possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Defendant was previously a fellow in pediatric anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

Christopher Sheerer, 37, of Boston, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Denise J. Casper to 22 years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. Sheerer was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $65,722. An additional amount of restitution will be determined at a hearing scheduled for March 26, 2026. In September 2025, Sheerer pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography; one count of possession of child pornography; and one count of sexual exploitation of children. Sheerer was arrested and charged in July 2024 and has remained in federal custody since.

“Every time child sexual abuse material is created, shared, or viewed, children are revictimized again and again,” said United States Attorney Leah B. Foley. “Each case serves as a difficult reminder that child predators are embedded in our communities. This defendant did not just possess this heinous material – he produced it himself and shared it with others. Moreover, his chosen employment increased his direct contact with children. Today’s sentence reflects the devastating harm these crimes inflict on real children and sends a clear message that those who fuel this abuse will face severe consequences. Our office will continue to work tirelessly to protect children, pursue justice for victims and hold offenders fully accountable.”

“Sheerer is among the worst kind of criminal we investigate. He held a position of trust in the community, but behind closed doors he was a predator of the highest order, not only participating in online groups dedicated to the sharing of photos depicting the sexual abuse of children but also acting as a hands-on offender. Now, he’s facing over two decades behind bars,” said Special Agent in Charge Michael J. Krol of Homeland Security Investigations New England. “When our special agents go to work every day, they’re working toward making the world a safer place for children. We hope that today’s sentence does just that and brings a measure of security to the family of the child he victimized as they move forward and begin to heal.”

Sheerer was a fellow in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology at Boston Children’s Hospital at the time of his arrest and was previously a fellow in pediatric anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

In May 2024, an investigation began into a user of an online, encrypted chat application who belonged to a group dedicated to the sharing of CSAM. The target user was subsequently identified as Sheerer, with an IP address tracing him to Johns Hopkins University. Sheerer uploaded imagery of a child known to him to gain admission to that group.
