Heartbreaking’: Mardi Gras rocked, huge call

It’s one of the biggest events of the year for Sydney, but the Mardi Gras’ new CEO has confirmed a major call that will leave fans devastated.

The hotly anticipated 2026 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras party, which was due to run after the parade on Saturday 28 February, has officially been cancelled meaning 2026’s festival will be the most scaled back since Covid.

New Mardi Gras chief executive Jesse Matheson - who previously ran for the NSW Upper House for protest party Keep Sydney Open - said the cancellation was necessary to “stabilise” the organisation financially. But he described it as a “pause” and said the organisation was “absolutely committed to bringing the main party back in 2027 for sure”.
