I stopped using email for anything more than giving instructions or otherwise in a work situation when I realized that the Indian managers were reading them.
I figured out in 2003 or so that ALL of my travel was known by the government, and probably all my cell phone conversations, too.
The only real solution is to use the systems for benign purposes, for posting images, poems, stuff that has no target value.
