Big Win for Trump as Appeals Court Blocks Liberal Judges from Releasing Migrants

President Donald Trump’s lawyers scored big on Friday when a Texas-based appeals court allowed officials to hold arrested migrants in detention so their migration cases can be quickly decided.

“ENORMOUS Immigration win for President Trump,” said Eric Wessen, the Solicitor General in Iowa’s Attorney General’s Office. He added:

The Fifth Circuit, the first federal court to address President Trump’s expedited removal efforts, sides with the administration. Illegal aliens may be detained and removed!

The 2:1 decision “is a big deal,” said Ilya Shapiro, a lawyer at the Manhattan Institute.

“After reviewing carefully the relevant provisions and structureof the Immigration and Naturalization Act, the statutory history, and Congressional intent,we conclude that the government’s position is correct,” the three-judge court decided.__

One Biden-nominated judge argued that the policy is unfair because prior presidents did not use the law:

The decision is a big blow to the many pro-migration lawyers who are using sympathetic judges to impose a catch-and-release burden on ICE enforcement. So thedecision helps Trump implementhis campaign promise todeport millions of illegal migrants, partly because they are a huge economic burden on ordinary American families.

“AWFUL news for due process,”complained Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a lawyer with a pro-migration advocacy group, adding:

Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi are already detention black holes. [Migrant] Release will be more difficult than ever. As more [migrants] are locked up, ICE will increase the pressure on those who are detained to give up. The goal is an assembly line of coercion with no day in court.

This decision puts even more pressure on plaintiffs and district courts outside the 5th Circuit. Unless the habeas is filed before a person is transferred to the 5th Circuit, a person may remain locked in appalling conditions, never even allowed to ask for bond [release]. This decision will wipe out the availability of release through bond for tens of thousands of people detained in or transported to Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi by ICE.

In Minnesota, for example, more than 700 “habeas corpus petitions” have been filed by pro-migration lawyersseeking to spring long-term migrants from ICE detention. Judges have justified many migrant releases by citing pro-release policies from prior administrations. This week, for example, progressives cheered when a judge ordered the quick release of an Ecuadorian economic migrant — and the child he brought from Ecuador — from detention in Texas.

The releases are prompted by a huge number of lawyers who work for pro-migration groups, said Bill Glahn, at the Center of the American Experiment in Minnesota.Their strategy is “just flood the zone, overwhelm the system, and then … you win,” he told Breitbart News.

DHS officials say that detention is important because it allows them to quickly decide each migrant’s legal claims and then to safely and cheaply deport them.

The court’s decision only applies to migrants detained in the district overseen by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which includes Texas. But a similar lawsuit is pending in the Eighth Circuit, which stretches from Arkansas to North Dakota and Minnesota….

EU seeking to slash family support to bankroll Ukraine – Orban

Brussels believes that choosing welfare over propping up Kiev is “heresy,” the Hungarian prime minister has said

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused the EU of seeking to strip Hungarian families of additional funding to finance Ukraine’s fight with Russia.

In a post on X on Friday, Orban said that “Brusselian bureaucrats have their hands out, trying to take money from our families so they can shovel it over to Kiev. Brussels calls putting families first heresy. We call it common sense.”

Orban tied the dispute to his domestic policy of redistributing tax revenue and expanding benefits, including the existing 13th-month pension and plans to phase in a 14th-month payment, arguing “the money is in a better place with Hungarian families than in Kiev.”

The EU is financed by member-state contributions and shared revenues, meaning that supporting Ukraine entails either higher national payments or EU-level borrowing that is later serviced via budgets. Last month, several media outlets reported that the US and EU had proposed a ten-year plan to the tune of about $800 billion designated for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

Orban, who has consistently opposed financial support for Ukraine, castigated the roadmap as a “shock,” warning that it would plunge the bloc into debt. Likewise, he has criticized the already approved €90 billion ($106 billion) EU loan for Ukraine for 2026–27. Hungary, along with several other EU members, opted out of the plan.

Brussels, meanwhile, has regularly withheld parts of Hungary’s EU funding over rule-of-law disputes and purported failure to adopt reforms. The recent suspension of more than €1 billion came ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections set for April.

Hungary has been one of the most outspoken critics within the EU of large-scale financial and military support for Ukraine and of the sanctions on Russia. Orban has repeatedly argued that sanctions have failed to end the fighting while driving up energy prices, weakening European competitiveness, and placing an unfair burden on households. He has also opposed Ukraine’s ambitions to join the EU and NATO, warning that this would draw the bloc into a direct conflict with Russia.

US pressuring Ukraine to hold elections soon – Reuters

The Americans are “in a hurry” to persuade Vladimir Zelensky to organize the vote, a report says

US negotiators have been pushing Ukraine to hold an election as soon as possible, Reuters reported on Friday.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly urged Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky to do so since his five-year presidential term expired in May 2024. Zelensky has argued that holding elections is impossible under martial law, but said in December 2025 that the laws could be amended to allow them.

The American team, led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, urged Ukrainian officials during recent meetings in Abu Dhabi and Miami to organize an election soon, Reuters said, citing three sources.

US and Ukrainian officials have also discussed the possibility of holding elections alongside a referendum on a peace deal with Russia in May, the news agency reported. Several sources, however, dismissed the US-proposed timeline as “fanciful.”

“The Americans are in a hurry,” one source told Reuters.

Another source said there is still no progress on territorial issues, which remain the main point of contention between Moscow and Kiev.

Russia has said it no longer views Zelensky as the legitimate leader of Ukraine and that his status could complicate the signing of a peace agreement. President Vladimir Putin said in December last year that Russia is prepared to consider refraining from “deep strikes” in Ukraine on the day an election is held.

Zelensky said in December that Ukraine would need up to three months to organize an election, as well as US security guarantees.

Zelensky’s standing has also been affected by a series of high-profile corruption scandals that led to the resignation of two government ministers and his longtime chief of staff, Andrey Yermak. Recent polling shows Zelensky at 62%, trailing former top military commander Valery Zaluzhny at 72% and Kirill Budanov at 70%. Budanov, a former military intelligence chief, replaced Yermak as head of the presidential office last month.

(With more than half of the Rada and leadership with Zelensky how can they find one honest man?)

Trump ‘surprised’ as Vance booed at Milan Olympics opening(VIDEOS)

Cheers for Team USA were drowned out by jeers when the screens in San Siro Stadium showed the vice president and his wife

US President Donald Trump expressed surprise after hearing that Vice President J.D. Vance was booed at the Olympics opening ceremony in Italy.

The Winter Olympics officially opened on Friday, with the traditional Parade of Nations at Milan’s iconic San Siro Stadium.

Team USA entered the stadium to applause, though when the cameras briefly showed Vance and his wife Usha waving American flags from the stands, the booing began.

“Oops… those are a lot of boos for him… whistling, jeering, some applause. Not a long shot for him on the screen there,” CBC commentator said on the live feed. The video quickly went viral on social media.

Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One on Friday, said he hadn’t seen the broadcast but found the reception “surprising.”

That’s surprising because people like him,”he said, adding that Vance is “in a foreign country, in all fairness – he doesn’t get booed in this country.”

In my 22 Olympics it probably has happened but I sure don’t remember it,”longtime USA Today sports columnist Christine Brennan wrote on X. Some people suggested the frosty welcome was linked to public discontent over recent US policies.

Domestic unrest over Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement also appears to have spilled into Italy. Hundreds protested in Milan on Friday against the presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel assigned to provide security for the US delegation.

Vance was not alone in getting booed. Team Israel also received a frosty welcome. They said they anticipated a hostile reception due to the Gaza conflict and global support for the Palestinians.

The Winter Olympics run from February 6 to 22. Thirteen Russian athletes will compete under neutral flags due to Russia’s Olympic Committee suspension over Ukraine-related sanctions – a decision Moscow has denounced as political.

Trump refuses to apologize for Obama monkey meme

The White House says a staffer posted a video depicting the former president and his wife as apes by mistake

US President Donald Trump has declined to apologize after a video depicting former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle as apes was posted on his Truth Social account. The now-deleted clip was condemned by both Democrats and Republicans as racist and deeply offensive.

According to Axios, the video was posted to Trump’s account on Thursday night and remained online for nearly 12 hours. The AI-generated clip was originally created by an account that posts pro-Trump memes.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt dismissed the backlash on Friday morning as “fake outrage.” The video was later taken down, and a White House official said a “staffer erroneously made the post.”

Trump distanced himself from the incident when questioned by reporters. Asked whether he would apologize, he replied, “No, I didn’t make a mistake.”

“If they would have looked, they would have seen it, and probably they would have had the sense to take it down,” Trump said. Asked whether he condemned the video’s content, he replied, “Of course I do.”

“I guess during the end of it, there was some kind of a picture that people don’t like. I wouldn’t like it either, but I didn’t see it,”Trump said on Air Force One.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, accused Trump of posting “this disgusting video”deliberately. “F**k Donald Trump and his vile, racist and malignant behavior. This guy is an unhinged bottom-feeder,” Jeffries said in a video address on Instagram

Republican Senator Tim Scott condemned the video as “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.”

Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican from Pennsylvania, said the post amounted to “a grave failure of judgment” and called for “a clear and unequivocal apology.”

US probing claims WhatsApp chats aren’t private – Bloomberg

Former contractors have alleged they and Meta staff had “unfettered” access to encrypted messages

US federal authorities are investigating allegations that staff at WhatsApp owner Meta Platforms Inc. had access to message contentdespite the company marketing the app as protected by end-to-end encryption, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.

Special agents from the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security have been examining claims from former Meta contractors who alleged that they and staff at Meta had “unfettered access” to WhatsApp messages.

One contractor told an investigator that a Facebook team employee confirmed they could “go back a ways into WhatsApp (encrypted) messages,” including in criminal cases, according to an agent’s report reviewed by Bloomberg.

WhatsApp, which was acquired by Meta in 2014, insists on its websitethat “no one outside of the chat, not even WhatsApp, can read, listen to, or share” what a user says.”

Meta spokespersonAndy Stone had also denied the allegations, stating that “what these individuals claim is not possible because WhatsApp, its employees, and its contractors, cannot access people’s encrypted communications.”

Bloomberg noted that theinquiry, internally dubbed “Operation Sourced Encryption,”was described as ongoing in a July 2025 document and was reportedly active as recently as January. However, its current status is unclear, the outlet said, noting that many such investigations end “without any formal accusations of wrongdoing.”

The probe follows a recent class-action lawsuit against Meta alleging the company can access and analyze virtually all WhatsApp communications. The claims have amplified longstanding skepticism from competitors and officials.

Controlled by billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, Meta also owns Facebook and Instagram, and in 2019 paid the US federal government $5 billion over a data privacy scandal involving the unauthorized harvesting of millions of Facebook users’ personal information by a British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica for political advertising.

Pavel Durov, founder of the rival Telegram app, recently mocked anyone trusting WhatsApp’s encryption claims, stating that “you’d have to be braindead to believe WhatsApp is secure in 2026.”

Last year, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also stated that allmessaging apps are “absolutely transparent systems” to intelligence and security servicesand urged people to refrain from sharing sensitive information on such platforms.

Extreme poverty rate shoots up in UK – study

Nearly seven million people are living in severe hardship, the highest level on record, according the Joseph Rowntree Foundation

Poverty in the UK has worsened, with record numbers living in severe hardship and unable to afford basic necessities, according to an analysis by a leading charity.

More than one in five people in the UK – about 14.2 million – were living in poverty in 2023/24, the final year of the last Conservative government and the latest year for which official figures are available, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) said in a report on Tuesday. Of these, about half, or 6.8 million people, were experiencing “very deep” hardship, the highest number in 30 years.

Children, renters, disabled people, and those in insecure work were among the groups most affected.Nearly 4.5 million children lived in poverty in 2023/24, 600,000 more than during the pandemicand marking the third consecutive year of increases. Rates were highest in larger families, where 44% of children were affected. People renting privately faced greater risks than homeowners, while disabled people and informal carers were also disproportionately affected, the report noted.

The most severe cases are even more acute. About 3.8 million people, including around one million children, experienced destitution, being unable to afford basics such as heating, clothing, and food.

“Poverty in the UK is still not just widespread, it is deeper and more damaging than at any point in the last 30 years,” said JRF’s chief analyst Peter Matejic. “When nearly half of the people in poverty are living far below the poverty line, that is a warning sign that the welfare system is failing to protect people from harm.”

Poverty rates varied across the UK, with London and the West Midlands among the hardest-hit areas, according to the report.

Rising living costs and stagnant wages have contributed to the increase in severe poverty, the charity stated. Inflation for essentials such as food, energy, and rent has surged in recent years, while earnings for low-income households have barely increased, leaving many struggling to cover basic needs.

The poorest UK households have only become poorer under Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government, despite promises to boost living standards, according to the latest data from independent research consultancy Retail Economics.

Google to pay $68 million over voice assistant ‘spying’ – media

The US tech giant has been sued by smartphone users alleging their devices recorded conversations

US tech giant Google has reached a preliminary agreement to pay $68 million to settle a lawsuit alleging its voice-activated assistant spied on smartphone users, Reuters reported on Monday, citing court filings.

According to preliminary calculations reported by The Verge, customers who purchased a device may be eligible for a settlement payout of $18 to $56. Those who used Google Assistant or lived in a household with a device that reportedly recorded conversations could receive $2 to $10.

Smartphone users allege that Google, part of Alphabet, illegally recorded private conversations via Google Assistant and used them for targeted advertising, according to a preliminary class action settlement filed on Friday in the San Jose, California, federal court, as seen by Reuters. The settlement reportedly requires approval by US District Judge Beth Labson Freeman.

The voice-activated assistant is designed to respond when people use so-called ‘hot words’, such as ‘Hey Google’ or ‘Okay Google’, similar to Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. The plaintiffs reportedly objected to receiving ads when Google Assistant incorrectly recognized their speech as hot words, a phenomenon referred to as ‘false accepts’.

The settlement reportedly applies to users who bought Google devices or were subjected to false accepts since May 18, 2016.

The case highlights the ongoing tension between emerging technologies and user privacy. ==In November 2025, Google was sued over its AI assistant Gemini allegedly intercepting private communications across Gmail, chat, and video-conferencing services••. In September, Google agreed to a $425.7 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit alleging privacy violations.

In December 2024, Apple settled for $95 million over claims that its Siri voice assistant recorded private conversations without user consent. Amazon has faced a nationwide class‑action lawsuit over alleged privacy violations by its Alexa voice assistant, with a federal judge allowing users to pursue claims that the devices recorded and retained private conversations without clear consent under consumer protection law.
