Story Cowles Epstein:

What does a former Palm Beach socialite know about the crimes of predator Jeffrey Epstein?

Does the man, the billionaire’s former assistant, Story Cowles, have the keys to the secrets of the billionaire’s kingdom?

When we contacted him recently at home in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he works in finance, he said he was unable to speak.

But why don’t we hear more about this key staffer?

Story Cowles, Epstein staffer:

hasheritage which includes Standard Oil, a Palm Beach mayor, a sugar baron and a house which belonged to a Vanderbilt.

Moreover, he is the former boyfriend of Epstein bossSarah Kellen, and worked for the predator for years in Palm Beach, Florida, and New York.

Story’s blue-blood path includes a step-father who was one of Epstein’s many lawyers.

Who is Story Cowles Epstein Staffer

Story’s mother, Elizabeth, now deceased,

was married to the high-profile law counsel,William Atterbury III, a Pennsylvania Railroad heir.

He has at least one sister from that marriage, an artist.

His aunt, Nicole Fanjul, is married to one of the richest men in Florida, the sugar baron, Alex Fanjul.

Jaime and Story Cowles Epstein staffer celebrate their upcoming marriage at a picturesque outdoor setting.

Secondly, his step-grandfather William Evarts Benjamin II, was a developer who became mayor of Manalapan.

According to The Palm Beach Post, Benjamin bought a house previously occupied by heiress Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan.

Despite all this apparent privilege, Story Cowles ends up working for Epstein.

Flight logs reveal he flew to The Bahamas on an Epstein jet. As well, he also lived with Kellen, the listed Epstein boss, in the so-called model apartments in New York.

As well, Story Cowles also lived in a home in Soho, which was owned by Kellen’s former husband Brian Vickers.

Story Cowles Epstein sitting on a beach playfully feeding a pig with a piece of food, surrounded by palm trees and other beachgoers in the background.

Story Cowles Epstein Staffer

At the time he met Epstein in 2006, Story Cowles was a promoter for the fanciest events in Palm Beach.

In 2006, he graduated with an associate’s degree in art studies from Florida State University.

About 10 years later, he achieved from Lynn University a Master of Business Administration. He has a Bachelor of Business from the same institution.

But the Epstein Allegations Continue to Follow Him

Moreover, his name was mentioned in a deposition made by one of Epstein’s pilots in Epstein v Edwards 2011 (see below).

Story Cowles Epstein

Pilot deposition Epstein v Edwards 2011

Authorities said the predator was using Story to serve as his go-between hid Palm Beach operations and the jail.

Prison records obtained by DailyMail.com showed he visited Epstein almost every single day.

(He) would arrive in the morning on most days, stay for a few hours and then leave around lunch time. He would then return a second time and leave again around 7pm, generally logging six or seven hours in jail each day as a result, despite he himself having committed no crime. Epstein tried to hide his association with Cowles by having him sign in as a paralegal, as only lawyers and a doctor were among the 20 approved visitors at the jail.

DailyMail.com

So what does the socialite know about the Epstein criminal conspiracy? A lot, according to these visitor logs from prison records.

According to CNBC: “No one visited Epstein more than Story Cowles, who was reportedly his personal assistant.Cowles visited Epstein nearly 130 times.”

Story Cowles Epstein – he also gave a deposition in the 2008 Jane Doe v Epstein case.

It was argued through lawyers that much of what he discussed with Epstein was subject to attorney client privilege.

Except Story was not a lawyer nor was he a paralegal, despite claiming he was on prison logs.

One of Epstein’s household staff told the court in 2008, Story was present during a visit to Palm Beach.

According to the court transcript (below), Epstein coconspirators Nadia Marcenko and Sarah Kellen were also present.

Story Cowles visited Jeffrey Epstein in a Florida jail 130 times. He spent almost as much time in the jail as Epstein. He also lived with Sarah Kellen and is related by marriage to one of the richest people in Florida. He probably knows more about the criminal enterprises of Epstein than anyone else alive. Has the government talked to him? Of course not.

The tragic downfall of New York’s most glamorous socialite

By Dana Schuster

Published April 16, 2016, 11:42 p.m. ET

Ten years ago, Tinsley Mortimer was the most photographed socialite in New York City — complete with her own reality TV show, signature lipstick shade and handbag line.

Now she’s living a secret, abusive nightmare in Florida.

Last Saturday, the 40-year-old Mortimer was arrested for trespassing at the Palm Beach, Fla., residence of her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Alexander “Nico” Fanjul, 30, the son of sugar baron Alexander Fanjul.

According to the police report, Fanjul called cops when Mortimer showed up uninvited — while Fanjul’s new girlfriend was there. When authorities arrived, Mortimer was “crying and screaming irrationally,” saying her purse was inside.

The socialite — who in 2008 launched her very own shade of Dior lipstick, Tinsley Pink — was booked into the Palm Beach County jail, charged with trespassing, and spent nearly three hours in the slammer.

Now the blond beauty, who went from diamond cuffs to handcuffs in less than a decade, has morphed into a cautionary tale for Pretty Young Things. What went so wrong?

For one thing, her 10-years-junior boyfriend, Fanjul. His billionaire family owns the right land, belongs to the right clubs — like the famously snobbish Bath and Tennis Club in Florida — and is a fixture on the party pages of The Shiny Sheet, the nickname for the Palm Beach Daily News. According to a source, Fanjul has been studying for his insurance license exam for the last three years.

He and Mortimer started seeing each other in December 2012. But Fanjul kept the relationship clandestine and mainly confined to after-hours hookups. Numerous people interviewed for this story called the duo’s dating life “unhealthy.”

But few knew just how unhealthy.

Since December 2013, there has been one arrest, four police reports and a written warning from the Palm Beach Police Department — all of which document physical abuse and trespassing. Sources say the ordeal has been a living hell for Mortimer, who continued to let Fanjul back into her life, hoping he would change and fearful of the havoc his family might wreak should she go public with claims of abuse.

According to one police report, Mortimer was hospitalized “due to a possible battery” on Christmas Day 2013.

“We saw that Tinsley had a laceration on the back of her head that was still bleeding . . . The left side of her face next to her eye was very swollen with yellow-and-green bruising. We also saw red and bruised markings on her forearms, biceps and elbows,” wrote the officer after visiting Mortimer, who had her mother, Dale Mercer, by her side, at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

She received three staples in the back of her head. Originally, Mortimer told officers that she tripped and fell.

Days later, on New Year’s Eve, Fanjul called the police because of an “unwanted guest.” The cops arrived to find Mortimer locked in a bedroom at Fanjul’s home declaring she was fearful of him and wanted to prosecute her sometime lover. The police report says she “appeared intoxicated” and her speech was slurred. She was issued a written warning for a trespass.

On New Year’s Day, she came clean in a phone conversation with police. According to that report, Mortimer was trying to intervene in a fight between her boyfriend and his younger brother, Oliver “Reddy” Fanjul, when she was “struck in the eye by Reddy.” Nico then “defended his brother,” and “the argument escalated to the point he covered her mouth and nose,” the report says.

It also read that Mortimer “made it clear she does not want to prosecute for the battery. She made several references to how powerful the family is” and his “family’s status in Palm Beach.”

Still, Mortimer continued to date Fanjul. A source says she was drawn back in by his apologies. (Calls to Fanjul were not returned.)

>Last Saturday, the 40-year-old Mortimer was arrested for trespassing at the Palm Beach, Fla., residence of her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Alexander “Nico” Fanjul, 30, the son of sugar baron Alexander Fanjul.

“Love is an addiction. You lose yourself,” says a friend of Mortimer’s. “I think [the arrest] is a good learning experience for her, as horrible as it is, to move on.”

Once upon a time (in the mid-2000s), Mortimer was the Queen Bee of New York City society. She was wed to her high school sweetheart, Topper Mortimer, whose great-grandfather was a director of Standard Oil. She graced the pages of Vogue (where she had previously worked as a beauty assistant), made a cameo on “Gossip Girl,” commandeered Fashion Week front rows, and managed to parlay her broad smile and bouncy curls into serious business deals. Among them: a purse line with Japanese company Samantha Thavasa and a highly coveted gig as Dior’s beauty ambassador.

“She was set up basically to be the next Cornelia Guest, the next It girl,” says one New York City society publicist.

But the life of the Virginia native took a downturn when she and Topper separated in 2009 amid allegations that she was too enamored with fame — and her illicit lover, Casimir “Cassi” Wittgenstein-Sayn, a German royal.

“After her marriage dissolved, she became another blonde in a room instead of Mrs. Topper Mortimer,” says the publicist.

In 2010, Mortimer’s reality show, “High Society,” premiered on the CW network to sneers and gasps. In one scene, her co-star Jules Kirby admits that the N-word “really should be OK to say.”

“What killed [Mortimer] was that reality show, honestly,” says someone who has sat on charity boards with Mortimer. “That was her demise.”

Since separating from her husband in 2009 and divorcing in 2013, Mortimer has been linked to men including “Bachelor” star Prince Lorenzo Borghese and “American Idol” alum Constantine Maroulis, who tells The Post that Mortimer’s “got some growing up to do” but is a “lovely girl.”

The former party-photo staple tells The Post that she moved to Florida in 2012 “to get away” from the pressures of the spotlight, and to be close to her mom.

But, as New York Social Diary creator David Patrick Columbia points out: “The problem with Palm Beach is that it’s too much money, and if you don’t have it, you’re nobody. And that’s tricky for a pretty girl like Tinsley.”

Mortimer — who grew up well, but not with the billions of her new neighbors — tried to adapt to life out of the public eye, ditching her Oscar de la Renta gowns and black-tie balls for a day job planning events for a tax company called Engineered Tax Services.

But drama found her when she met Fanjul.

Alexander “Nico” Fanjul, the son of sugar baron Alexander Fanjul, was arrested for domestic violence, including allegations of strangulation and robbery, on Monday night in Palm Beach, Fla.

Fanjul’s family owns Florida Crystals and Fanjul Corp, the sugar and real estate conglomerate in the US and the Dominican Republic.

According to the police report obtained by Page Six, Palm Beach cops arrived at his home at 11p.m. when a neighbor called 911 after hearing a woman screaming.

When an officer arrived, they heard a woman screaming “Get off me,” reads the report, adding Fanjul was standing over the woman who was “in a defensive ‘fetal’ position.”

The officer saw her face bleeding, the report said. The unidentified woman told police she had been physically assaulted by Fanjul and “thought she was going to die.”

The woman told the police that they had dined earlier at the swank Flagler Steakhouse at the ritzy Breakers Hotel when wealthy Fanjul, “became irate because the two were sat by a homosexual couple at the restaurant.”

The report continues that after dinner, “Fanjul became increasingly irate and continued to speak about his frustration with the restaurant.”

The Flagler restaurant tells Page Six when reached for comment: “We have no record of an incident as you describe, and have no further information to share.”

While outside the home, the woman allegedly “told Fanjul to drop the subject and that is when he began to punch [her] in the face with a closed fist causing bruising, bleeding and swelling of the facial area.”

The woman told police that he then, “continually kneed her in the face.”

Fanjul, whose family empire is reportedly worth billions, is also accused of ripping her purse from her shoulder after she threatened to call for help and then smashing her hand and phone.

“Fanjul grabbed her hand that held her cell phone and began to smash her hand and her phone into the ground causing it to shatter and break,” reads the report.

After she began screaming, he “forcibly dragged her inside the residence to prevent her from receiving aid or escaping.”

> Sugar heir Alexander ‘Nico’ Fanjul arrested for strangulation, robbery

The Fanjul family,

historically prominent Cuban sugar producers since the 1850s, fled to the U.S. in the early 1960s after Fidel Castro’s regime seized their extensive Cuban mills, distilleries, and land holdings. They built a new, massive sugar empire in Florida and the Dominican Republic, known for brands like Domino Sugar, while remaining influential in U.S. politics.

Key details regarding the Fanjul family and their connection to Cuba:

Cuban Background: The family operated the Czarnikow-Rionda Company and the Cuban Trading Company, and by the late 1950s, they controlled ten sugar mills, distilleries, and significant real estate in Cuba.

Exile and Expansion: Following the 1959 revolution, the Fanjuls established their base in Florida, founding what is now a global sugar leader, the Fanjul Corporation, which also includes Florida Crystals and ASR Group.

Interest in Returning: Alfonso "Alfy" Fanjul Jr. has expressed openness to investing in Cuba if legal frameworks and, to some extent, the political climate change.

Legal Controversies: The family's company, ASR Group, has faced lawsuits under the Helms-Burton Act for allegedly trafficking in sugar grown on land confiscated by the Cuban government.

Political Influence: The brothers are major political donors in the U.S., lobbying to protect the federal sugar program

The Fanjul brothers—

Alfonso ("Alfy") and José ("Pepe")—are famous for their "bipartisan" approach to political giving, effectively ensuring support for the U.S. sugar industry regardless of which party is in power.

The Two-Brother Strategy

Historically, the family split its loyalties to maximize influence:

Alfy Fanjul (Democrat): Longtime ally of the Clinton family. He served as co-chairman of Bill Clinton's Florida campaign in 1992 and has been a major fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidates ever since, including Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Pepe Fanjul (Republican): A major donor to the GOP for decades. He was a significant backer of George W. Bush and supported Marco Rubio before becoming a central figure in Donald Trump's fundraising circle.

Key Presidential Cycles

2024 Election: While maintaining some Democratic ties, the family’s support shifted more decisively toward Donald Trump.

Donald Trump: Pepe Fanjul hosted a massive fundraiser for Trump in 2024 that raised roughly $50 million.

White House Projects: Pepe and Emilia Fanjul were recently named as private donors helping fund the $300 million White House ballroom project during Trump's second term.

2016 Election: The family famously "played both sides" by holding separate high-dollar fundraisers for both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton during the same cycle.

1996 Election: During the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Alfy Fanjul famously called Bill Clinton in the Oval Office to complain about proposed sugar taxes while the president was in a meeting.

Recent Giving (2024 Cycle)

According to OpenSecrets, the family and its company, Fanjul Corp, have directed millions toward:

MAGA Inc. (Super PAC): $1,000,000.

Republican National Committee (RNC): $413,000.

Democratic Congressional Efforts: While leaning Republican recently, they still gave $100,000 to the House Majority PAC (Liberal) and over $82,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

This calculated giving helps protect government sugar subsidies and price supports, which are estimated to be worth approximately $65 million annually to the Fanjul empire

Story Cowles is connected to the Fanjul family through marriage and high-society circles in Palm Beach, specifically as a relative of

Nicole Fanjul.

Familial Link: Story Cowles is the nephew of Nicole Fanjul. Nicole is the former wife of Alexander Fanjul, who is the younger brother of family patriarchs Alfy and Pepe Fanjul.

Association with Jeffrey Epstein: Cowles has been identified in media reports as a frequent visitor to Jeffrey Epstein during Epstein's 2008–2009 incarceration in Palm Beach.

Extended Social Ties:Cowles reportedly dated Sarah Kellen,a former employee of Epstein. Through these circles, Cowles is linked to the broader network of wealthy Palm Beach figures, though the Fanjul brothers' official spokespeople have denied any personal relationship between the brothers and Epstein.

Society Connections: The Fanjul family's younger generation, including Cowles’ cousin Alexander "Nico" Fanjul, is often featured in the same social news as Cowles, frequently involving high-profile relationships and legal issues in Florida

Story Cowles’ primary connection to the Vanderbilt family is through high-society heritage and property ties in Palm Beach, where the histories of the Cowles, Fanjul, and Vanderbilt families frequently intersect.

  1. Shared Palm Beach Heritage

Story Cowles is a member of the prominentCowles publishing family (which founded Look magazine and owned various major newspapers). His social lineage includes:

The Fanjul Connection: He is the nephew of Nicole Fanjul (the former wife of Alexander Fanjul).

The Vanderbilt Connection: Media reports describing Cowles’ background note that his family heritage includes a home in Palm Beach that previously belonged to a Vanderbilt. This aligns with the long-standing history of the Vanderbilt family in Palm Beach, where they were among the original developers of the island’s elite social scene.

  1. Intertwined Social Circles

The Cowles and Vanderbilt families have moved in the same "inner circle" of East Coast old money for over a century:

Historical Overlap: In the early 20th century, members of the Cowles family, such asAnna Roosevelt Cowles (sister of Theodore Roosevelt), were close social peers of the Vanderbilt family, frequently attending the same exclusive events at estates likeBiltmore.

The "Sugar Trust" Legacy: The Fanjul family, to whom Story Cowles is related by marriage, is considered the modern-day heir to the 19th-century "Sugar Trust"—an industrial empire that was historically a peer and rival to the Vanderbilt railroad dynasty.

  1. The Jeffrey Epstein Link

Story Cowles gained modern notoriety due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein. During this period, Cowles was part of a social network in Palm Beach that included descendants of many Gilded Age families, including the Vanderbilts and Fanjuls.
