NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day

February 8, 2026

Active Sunspot Region 4366 Crosses the Sun

An unusually active sunspot region is now crossing the Sun. The region, labelled AR 4366, is much larger than the Earth and has produced several powerful solar flares over the past ten days. In the featured image, the region is marked by large and dark sunspots toward the upper right of the Sun's disk. The image captured the Sun over a hill in Zacatecas, Mexico, 5 days ago. AR 4366 has become a candidate for the most active solar region in this entire 11-year solar cycle. Active solar regions are frequently associated with increased auroral activity on the Earth. Now reaching the edge, AR 4366 will begin facing away from the Earth during the coming week. It is not known, though, if the active region will survive long enough to reappear in about two weeks' time, as the Sun rotates.

Interstellar Comet 3i Atlas' NASA Telescope Show Sudden Flare Up As It Exits Solar System - Like A Spaceship Leaving!

08 February 2026, 3:28 AM GMT

NASA has captured striking new images of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS as it unexpectedly flared while exiting the solar system, an unusual surge of activity that has intrigued scientists and fuelled fresh online speculation about the object's origins.

NASA's SPHEREx space telescope has captured new infrared observations of comet 3I/ATLAS showing a dramatic increase in activity in December 2025, months after the object made its closest approach to the Sun.

Instead of gradually fading as expected, the comet released a surge of gas, dust and complex molecules while already on its way out of the inner solar system.

The Comet In Question

The observations revealed a glowing coma surrounding the comet, rich in water vapour, carbon dioxide and organic compounds. Scientists also detected a distinctive, pear-shaped dust tail, formed as rocky material was ejected into space during the outburst.

Researchers say the timing of the flare-up was unexpected. Comets usually become most active near perihelion — the point at which they pass closest to the Sun — when solar heating causes surface ice to sublimate.

In the case of 3I/ATLAS, however, the most intense activity occurred well after that point.

'Rather than quietly dimming as it moved away, the comet became significantly brighter,' said Carey Lisse, lead author of the study, in a statement from NASA. "Even water ice was rapidly turning into gas far from the Sun."

Comet 3I/ATLAS was discovered in July 2025 by the ATLAS asteroid survey and is only the third confirmed interstellar object ever observed passing through the solar system.

The first, 1I/'Oumuamua, detected in 2017, drew widespread attention due to its unusual shape and motion, while the second, 2I/Borisov, identified in 2019, behaved more like a typical comet.

Alien In Origin?

Although astronomers stress that 3I/ATLAS is a natural object, its sudden brightening has fuelled renewed speculation online.

Some social media users have likened the flare-up to a spacecraft "powering up" as it departs, echoing earlier claims that interstellar objects could be artificial in origin.

Scientists, however, say there is no evidence to support such theories.

According to researchers, the most likely explanation lies beneath the comet's surface.

Sunlight may have taken time to penetrate a hardened outer crust, eventually reaching deeply buried ice that had remained frozen for billions of years.

Once warmed, those ancient materials rapidly escaped into space, producing the delayed outburst seen by SPHEREx.

The telescope is particularly well suited to this kind of analysis.

Operating in infrared wavelengths, SPHEREx can identify not only dust but also a wide range of molecules streaming from the comet, including methane, methanol, cyanide and other carbon-rich compounds — substances considered essential in the early stages of planet formation.

Because 3I/ATLAS originated beyond the solar system, its chemical make-up offers a rare opportunity to compare local comets with icy bodies formed around other stars.

Early results suggest many familiar ingredients are present, supporting the idea that the basic building blocks of planets may be common throughout the Milky Way.

Last Few Sighting

Scientists also believe the comet's long exposure to cosmic radiation during its interstellar journey played a role.

Over immense timescales, this radiation likely altered the comet's surface, sealing off more pristine ice beneath.

When solar energy finally reached those untouched layers, it triggered the sudden release of material.

The findings were published in February 2026 in Research Notes of the AAS.

While comet 3I/ATLAS is now fading as it continues into deep space, scientists say its unexpected farewell has provided valuable insight into the nature of interstellar objects — and a reminder of why such visitors continue to spark both scientific interest and public fascination.

Anomaly in Super Bowl LX Flyover Patch Highlights Shift in Aircraft Plans

Last updated: February 7, 2026

The upcoming Super Bowl LX promises not only thrilling football action but also an awe-inspiring aerial display featuring a mix of state-of-the-art military aircraft.

Among the expected participants are Air Force B-1 Lancer bombers, F-15C Eagle fighters, Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets, and F-35C Lightning fighters.

However, an intriguing detail has emerged concerning the commemorative flight suit patch, which features silhouettes of the Air Force’s F-22 Raptor, an aircraft not slated to participate in the flyover.

Katie Spencer, the Sports Outreach Program manager for the Department of the Air Force, clarified that the inclusion of the F-22 was intentional, reflecting shifting operational requirements rather than an oversight.

Initially, the plan was to feature a pair of F-22s alongside other advanced jets from both military branches. Spencer explained that operational needs have taken precedence, resulting in the F-22s being assigned to missions that demand their advanced capabilities.

While specific operational details were not disclosed, it was noted that F-22s played a crucial role in significant operations earlier this year, including strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and targeted missions against ISIS in Syria.

The flyover serves a dual purpose: it provides essential training time for aircrews and does not incur additional taxpayer costs. Spencer emphasized that these flyovers are integral for maintaining proficiency in real-world operations.

In place of the F-22s, F-15s from California’s Fresno Air National Guard Base were called upon to join the impressive formation, showcasing the adaptability of U.S. military forces.

The flyover aligns with the 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States, symbolizing the strength and unity of American airpower. This marks a historic collaboration between the Air Force and Navy for a Super Bowl flyover.

The choice of aircraft was made with careful consideration; the B-1 bomber, affectionately known as “the Bone,” leads the formation due to its iconic status and ability to effectively represent air power.

The addition of the F-35C, which is designed for carrier landings, reinforces the fifth-generation capabilities of the Navy, while the F/A-18 and F-15 are revered fighters in the U.S. arsenal.

On the ground, a joint color guard from the Military District of Washington will pay tribute during the event, showcasing service members from various branches, including the Army, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

This element of the ceremony is designed to reflect the inter-service cooperation that defines the U.S. military.

Planning for the flyover has spanned roughly a year, involving coordination between the National Football League, NBC, the Federal Aviation Administration, and military officials.

Given that Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, is a conventional venue rather than a dome, the flyover will feature a larger-than-usual formation, enhancing the impact of the display.

Fans can expect a sensory experience that goes beyond the visual, as Spencer promised the audience would “feel the sound of freedom” resonating throughout the stadium when the formation departs, delivering a poignant reminder of the strength and capabilities of U.S. military aviation.

A NASA satellite captured a curious moment when Mount Vesuvius became visible through an opening in the clouds, creating an unusual image of one of Europe's most observed volcanoes today

07/02/2026 às 20:30

In January 2022, a NASA satellite captured Mount Vesuvius visible through a circle of clouds in Naples, during a Landsat-8 pass with the Operational Land Imager sensor.

The image revealed the caldera and topography of Mount Somma, reminding us that the volcano remains active and monitored, even without recent eruptions in the Italian region.

NASA's satellite captured a rare snapshot of timing: Mount Vesuvius was visible for a few seconds through a circular opening in the clouds, with the crater highlighted and the city of Naples surrounding it as an immediate reference for scale and proximity.

The image It caught my attention because it brings together two layers at the same time.. It is visually unusual and technically useful.Since Landsat-8 delivers a consistent record for comparing terrain, contours, and physical features over time.

How Landsat-8 transforms a moment into comparable data.

Landsat-8 operates in orbit systematically scanning the surface, and the Operational Land Imager sensor records different spectral bands to compose a detailed reading of the terrain.

When the clouds align and leave a clear hole, the NASA satellite gains a window that doesn't depend on helicopters, drones, or local crews. The crucial point is that the image is not just a "pretty shot".

The value lies in the repetition and standardization of the record.Because the same acquisition geometry of Landsat-8 allows for the comparison of scenes from different days, separating atmospheric noise from real changes in the relief, color, and physical signature of Mount Vesuvius.

What appears when the clouds part over Naples?

The opening in the clouds revealed the summit caldera, described as a bowl-shaped depression associated with eruptive episodes and collapse.

To the north, the remnant of Mount Somma appears, a geological feature cited as the structure from which Mount Vesuvius grew, creating a stark contrast between ancient edges and the current cone.

This reading is important because Naples is close enough to transform any interpretation into a discussion of risk and planning.

When Mount Vesuvius becomes visible with this level of clarity, the gaze shifts from contemplation to context. And the clouds cease to be just scenery, becoming a filter that, for a moment, has been removed.

Why NASA satellites and clouds end up in the same technical conversation.

NASA's satellite doesn't just measure "if you can see it," it helps build data series.

Clouds interfere, hide, and distort, and therefore a clear opening becomes an event: it reduces uncertainty of interpretation and improves the understanding of what is at and around the summit of Mount Vesuvius.

Furthermore, Mount Vesuvius is classified as an active volcano and may exhibit subterranean earthquakes and gas venting at its summit, which supports the rationale for continuous observation.

In this context, Landsat-8 becomes part of a surveillance package….and the clouds, which normally get in the way, end up providing the framing that made the scene unusual and memorable.

The history that makes Mount Vesuvius continue to be a benchmark for risk.

The most famous eruption of Mount Vesuvius is associated with the year 79 AD, when Roman cities such as Pompeii and Herculaneum were simultaneously destroyed and preserved.

The most recent eruption mentioned occurred in 1944 and affected the neighboring village of San Sebastiano, reinforcing the idea that the volcano is not just an ancient landmark, but a system with a modern history.

On a long-term scale, Mount Vesuvius is estimated to have had eight major eruptions in the last 17 years, based on geological analysis of the surrounding layers.

The factor that weighs heavily in the European debate is geography: Naples is about 12 kilometers northwest of the volcano, and the region is home to more than 3 million people, which makes any image from the NASA satellite more than a curiosity and any hole in the clouds more than a coincidence.

A break in the clouds, the right angle, and the passage of Landsat-8 were all it took to produce an image that seems casual, but carries technical and historical significance.

When NASA's satellite "cuts out" Mount Vesuvius over Naples, the photo becomes a reminder of its proximity., and the discussion returns to basics.: monitor, understand and communicate risk without relying on alarms.

Will astronauts aboard the ISS get to watch Super Bowl LX?

February 8, 2026

The National Football League's annual Super Bowl television telecast is practically a national holiday and traditionally one of the most watched sporting events on the planet, with roughly 200 million fans around the world in 130 countries tuning in to cheer on their favorite squads.

On Sunday, NASA's mission control at the Johnson Space Center in Houston will beam the Super Bowl LX showdown between Seattle and New England to the three remaining people aboard the ISS.

That trio consists of just NASA's Christopher Williams and cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikayev of Russia's space agency Roscosmos.

Last month’s first-ever medical evacuation of SpaceX Crew-11 brought NASA's Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, Japan's Kimiya Yui, and cosmonaut Oleg Platonov safely back to Earth on Jan. 15., leaving just three on the orbital lab.

When inquiring as to whether NASA has any special Super Bowl events or activities planned for the three ISS inhabitants, JSC's acting news chief Chelsey Ballarte directed us to the Jan. 30 press briefing for NASA's upcoming Crew-12 mission to the ISS where Dina Contella, Deputy Manager for NASA's International Space Station Program told reporters that the agency has it covered.

"If they'd like to watch the Super Bowl, we'll give them that chance," Contella said. "We'll have to see how that overlaps, and if there's any critical events for ISS, but certainly we could record it and if necessary, play it back."

But it'll be a late night affair for the astronauts circling the globe at 17,500 mph (28,000 km/h) some 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Earth, since life aboard the space station operates on a fixed Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) schedule and not any single country's time zone, which means that kickoff won't occur until 11:30 p.m. for the orbiting crew.

This year Super Bowl LX will see the NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks take on the AFC Champion New England Patriots on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Kickoff is officially scheduled for 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET on NBC and streaming on Peacock.

Any allegiances to either the Seattle Seahawk or the New England Patriots for the three left on the ISS is pure speculation, but since the pair of Roscosmos astronauts were raised in Russia they might not follow American football as closely but are certainly free to cheer for either team.

Christopher Williams has both west coast and east coast affiliations having been born in New York City but received his bachelor's degree at Stanford University in Palo Alto, just down the road from Santa Clara's Levi's Stadium where the game will be played.

Watch Super Bowl LX from anywhere

If you're far from the U.S., whether in space or in another country, and want to watch Super Bowl LX, there are plenty of ways to do it:

The 10 best space and sci-fi Super Bowl commercials of all time

February 8, 2026

On Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026, the NFL will hold Super Bowl LX at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, in a gritty gridiron matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.

While millions will be glued to their big-screen TV sets, cheering on their favorite team to see who becomes the victor with the right to hoist the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy, others will be snacking and checking out the colorful parade of Super Bowl commercials corporations are paying upwards of $8 million per slot to air in this annual football season finale.

Over the decades, there's been a wealth of Super Sunday ads that use outer space and science fiction as a major theme to promote their brands, and we're tossing out a stellar lineup of these classic Super Bowl sales tools to determine the best of the best. From somber dystopian societies and insane alien invasions, to an Area 51 test kitchen and cute space puppies, let’s count down the 10 best space and sci-fi Super Bowl ads and choose the winner!

  1. AXE Apollo "Lifeguard" – 2013 Super Bowl XLVII

Nothing beats an astronaut! Here's an oldie but a goodie from 2013, courtesy of AXE Apollo Body Spray. It depicts a beach lifeguard charging into the ocean to save a female bather in peril from the jaws of a ravenous shark.

The brave lifeguard risks life and limb to stab and punch the killer fish and rescue the damsel in distress, only to lose her to a man in a spacesuit walking along the sand who removes his helmet as the woman sprints to our space hero.

  1. Doritos "Abduction" – 2025 Super Bowl LIX

What would the Super Bowl be without a delicious Doritos ad? Here's last year’s entry with an enjoyable sci-fi twist.

When a serious alien conspiracy theorist has a close encounter with a UFO that intends to abduct his Doritos chips, a furious tug-of-war battle to extricate our true believer from his tangy supply of Doritos ensues.

The chip-loving aliens succeed, but the snack food's bold flavor causes their flying saucer to split in half and explode, ending with a crunchy cross-universe cultural exchange.

  1. Apartments.com "Extraterrentrials" – 2024 Super Bowl LVIII

Jeff Goldblum returns as Apartments.com's charming spokesman, Brad Bellflower, in this funny takeoff on classic alien invasion films with a tense standoff between insect-like creatures and cautious humans armed with weapons.

Bellflower knows that finding a suitable place to live when moving to a new city or galaxy is a top priority, and he’s here to help the strange visitors discover a nice one-bedroom apartment to rent.

It’s quick and effective, using familiar tropes to deliver an amusing dose of advice while you're refilling the chips and dip platter during the game.

  1. Hexclad "Unidentified Frying Object" – 2025 Super Bowl LIX

Tough celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay stars in this advertising jewel from last year's Big Game. Ramsay is recruited to the secret Area 51 test kitchen to prepare special cuisine for a new alien species Earth has just made contact with.

He’s equipped with an advanced set of HexClad cookware to whip up some killer chow for these "foodie" extraterrestrials. These durable, low-friction pans were designed using reverse-engineered alien spaceship technology.

Comedian Pete Davidson makes a cool cameo in the finale!

  1. Olay "Space Walk" – 2020 Super Bowl LIV

"Is there enough space… in space…for women?"

Olay's Regenerist face cream targets the ladies in this STEM-centric spot launched for the 2020 Super Bowl.

Inspired by 2019's first all-female spacewalk, Olay’s empowering mission stars late-night talk show host Lilly Singh, actress Busy Philipps, and former astronaut Nicole Stott blasting into space with Hidden Figures star Taraji P Henson.

It's a silly trip into orbit and beyond with a solid message of equality and opportunity for all. Its hope was to provide inspiration to young women interested in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics by donating up to $500K for the Girls Who Code organization.

  1. Walmart "Famous Visitors" – 2020 Super Bowl LIV

There's an explosion of cool pop culture cameos that must have cost the company millions in licensing fees in Walmart's extended Super Bowl LIV commercial promoting their expanded curbside grocery pickup service.

It’s a veritable Who’s Who of sci-fi vehicles and cameos, including spaceships and transportation methods from "Star Trek," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Men in Black," "Mars Attacks!," "Star Wars," "Arrival," "Flash Gordon," "The Lego Movie," and even Looney Tunes' Marvin the Martian's flying saucer all grabbing some supplies before zooming off again.

  1. Squarespace "Hello Down There" – 2024 Super Bowl LVIII

Directed by Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese, here’s the extended cut of the alien invasion ad created for the website-building company, Squarespace.

This tale of intergalactic contact begins when extraterrestrials try to get Earthlings' attention, but they're so fixated with watching cat videos and reading about celebrity bacon diets on their cell phones that they don’t notice.

Clever aliens decide to construct a website that will announce their arrival. The attractive online greeting card works, and humans finally wake up to greet their cosmic neighbors. Scorsese even scores a fun cameo at the end!

  1. Kia "Space Babies" – 2013 Super Bowl XLVII

Heralding from the iconic ad agency of David & Goliath, this hilarious spot for the 2014 Kia Sorrento features a dad spinning a wild yarn to his young son about the planet Babylandia, where newborn humans and animals are created.

There’s an exceptional use of CGI in Kia's instant classic, as this gem reveals baby boys, girls, puppies, pandas, and piglets as they make their 9-month rocketship journey to Earth and parachute to safety all over the world.

No doubt this impressive mini-movie helped sell a container ship full of family-friendly compact SUVs, and it's still one of the best of the bunch.

  1. Audi R8 "Commander" – 2016 Super Bowl L

This awesome ad for Super Bowl 50 chokes me up every time! It's a beautiful piece of advertising that blends nostalgia with a bittersweet message about pushing boundaries.

Here, a retired Apollo astronaut surrounded by mementos of the Space Age's golden years regains his zest for life when his son arrives and hands him the keys to a new Audi R8 V10-powered sportscar and he’s back on the launch pad, rocketing into outer space.

Paired with David Bowie’s 1972 tune, "Starman," it resonates on every level, making us believe in the power of exploration, technology, and its transportive abilities.

  1. Apple "1984" – 1984 Super Bowl XVIII

Big Brother is watching!

Although this remarkable Ridley Scott-directed ad for Apple’s new Macintosh personal computer only ran once in the third quarter of the 1984 Super Bowl, its legend lives on.

Meant to be a takeoff on George Orwell’s dystopian masterwork novel, "1984," it’s clearly a shot across IBM’s bow with its oppressive themes and fearless rebel tossing a hammer to shatter the propaganda screen.

Banned due to a lawsuit from the Orwell estate for copyright infringement, it's never been topped or broadcast again.

As a vital hub for space access and advanced air and space testing, Vandenberg SFB plays a critical role in strengthening America’s national security through Assured Access to Space.

In addition to the base's active spaceport, Vandenberg Guardians and Airmen enable essential missions such as nuclear deterrence, homeland defense, global command and control of space assets, orbital tracking, and training the next generation of space Guardians and nuclear Airmen.
