ICE surveillance concerns shift Democrats’ demands for body cameras

Critics fear the cameras could be used to feed video of protesters into facial recognition tools.these people are insane

A push to put body cameras on all ICE agents hasDemocrats running headlong into a new problem: fear that the technology will provide another avenue for mass surveillance of protesters.

Congressional Democratic leaders have made universal use of body cameras one of their prime demands for imposing accountability on Immigration and Customs Enforcement, especially after federal agents fatally shot two American citizens in Minneapolis. But after an outcry from privacy advocates that surveillance tools will allow ICE agents to identify and track protesters, Democrats are also calling for restrictions on how the body cameras can be used.

Lawmakers and legal observers have accused ICE of leveraging a variety of cameras to surveil protesters, feeding pictures into license plate readers and facial recognition systems. Democrats now worry that the body cameras they’re demanding could be used for similar purposes.

Democrats have proposed legislation to limit ICE’s use of facial recognition, but the proposals are unlikely to advance without bipartisan support.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer say they want to tack on restrictions to how ICE can use body camera footage, according to a letter sent to Republican leadership on Wednesday night.

“Prohibit tracking, creating or maintaining databases of individuals participating in First Amendment activities,” the letter says. (Wait a minute the Federal Government has the largest camera's for facial recognition then the world, plus there are millions more on every business out there, along with all the Ring Camera's, Congress cannot stop the law from having them. Plus you assholes voted for it, everywhere.)

It’s unclear how the request for new limits on surveillance will affect ongoing negotiations with Republicans to pass a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security. Republicans already agreed to provide more funding for body cameras for ICE officers before Democrats began pushing for limits on how the images are used.

A spokesperson for Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chair Mark Warner (D-Va.) told POLITICO that Democrats are lining up behind leadership to push for the restrictions, fueled by reports of ICE tracking protesters. DHS launched an internal investigation on ICE’s use of surveillance after Warner sent a letter flagging privacy worries.

Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), who proposed a ban on ICE agents using facial recognition, also supported surveillance limits on body cameras.

“Obviously we want them to be wearing body cameras, but we would want restrictions placed on what that information could be used for,”Markey said. “We want to make sure that we have the accountability for how these officers conduct themselves on the streets of our country, but we don’t want it in turn to be used as a way of coming back and suppressing free speech.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump would not accept any deals that undermine ICE’s enforcement capabilities.

Trump administration scolds Mamdani for executive order reaffirming sanctuary protections

The administration’s rebuke comes as the president has threatened to freeze federal funding for sanctuary jurisdictions like New York City.

By Chris Sommerfeldt02/06/2026 05:17 PM EST

NEW YORK — President Donald Trump’s administrationblasted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Friday for issuing an executive order reaffirming the city’s sanctuary laws, contending the directive will make the city “less safe.”

Mamdani’s order instructs all municipal agencies to ensure compliance with existing sanctuary laws, which bar city employees from assisting federal authorities in most forms of immigration enforcement. The order also directed certain public-facing agencies, including theNYPD, to have their employees undergo new training on sanctuary restrictions. The executive action did not otherwise enact any new restrictions.

Still, Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for Trump’s Department of Homeland Security, said Mamdani’s move raises public safety concerns.

“Mamdani will make New Yorkers less safe as a direct result of this policy,” McLaughlin said in a statement.

She also demanded the mayor “agree to release criminals in New York City’s custody to ICE before they are released back onto the Big Apple’s streets to victimize and prey on more Americans.

The DHS rebuke comes after Trump threatened last month to “significantly” slash federal funding for all sanctuary jurisdictions in the U.S. He gave cities a Feb. 1 deadline to roll back their sanctuary protections or face funding cuts.

But that deadline came and went without any immediate cuts in New York City.

Democrat-led cities across the country have taken increasingly aggressive steps to fight Trump’s immigration crackdownssince ICE and Border Patrol agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens who had been protesting enforcement sweeps in Minneapolis last month.

Asked about McLaughlin’s broadside at a press conference Friday afternoon, Mamdani sought to flip the script.

“These are policies that keep New Yorkers safe,” he said of his executive order. “These are policies that are motivated by delivering public safety, not in spite of public safety.”

Canada plants a flag in Greenland

Foreign Affairs Minister Anand insists Nuuk is a long-term Arctic play — with Anchorage up next.1/2

(Greenland is being duped by Canada, France and others to start a Trade War with Trump, they just don't know it yet. Canada's actions are only accelerating Trumps eliminating them from USMCA. Pathetically Stupid People.)

NUUK, Greenland — Canada opened a consulate in Nuuk on Friday, signaling support for Greenlanders rattled by President Donald Trump’s sovereignty threats while trying to avoid a fight with Washington.

The mission was in motion well before Trump’s saber-rattling. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand called it key to Canada’s Arctic strategy as Ottawa tries to manage its relationship with the U.S. ahead of looming trade talks.

“I am underscoring that opening this consulate has been part of our intentions in our Arctic foreign policy for some time,” Anand told POLITICO on Friday after arriving in Greenland’s tiny, remote capital. “We will also be opening a consulate in Anchorage.”

Trump’s recent threats to acquire Greenland reframed this week’s flag-raising ceremonies by Canada and France — establishing new missions designed to reassure Greenland without setting off Washington. Trump’s remarks have strained relations between Europe and the U.S. and added pressure on Canada ahead of this summer’s review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

“Look, the United States is our closest trading partner, and we have a long economic and security and defense history with them, and we want to continue to build those ties, especially get back to the table for review of the USMCA in 2026,”Anand said.

But Anand’s flag raising in Nuuk on Friday carried some extra diplomatic heft: Gov. Gen. Mary Simon — the king’s representative in Canada — plus, the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Jean Goodwill, which anchored in Nuuk’s picturesque harbor.

“It also is a show of support for Greenlanders during a time in their long history, where they are feeling a sense of anxiety and concern,” Anand said.

Simon, who is Canada’s first Indigenous governor general, is Inuk, and was greeted in Nuuk by several dozen of the 90 Canadian Inuit who flew in a day early as a show of solidarity.

They gave her a hero’s welcome, as she shook hands and posed for photos and selfies.

Afterward,Natan Obed, president of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, called Canada’s move an important show of support — even if it is unlikely to sway the president. “I’m not quite sure that Donald Trump is going to be at all moved by Canada opening a consulate here,” he told POLITICO.

“But what I do hope is that Canada and itsallies will see this as a very positive step … we not only will have allies that are traditional — whether it be in the Commonwealth or NATO— but also for countries that have respect for Indigenous people’s rights of self-determination.” (NATO? are they nuts?)

In a speech to a reception of diplomats, officials and Inuit from Canada, Obed took a thinly veiled swipe at Trump’s foreign policy and “this old idea, of Manifest Destiny.”

“I can’t even imagine, for the Inuit here from Greenland, what it is like to read about yourselves in the papers in such ways that are disrespectful and don’t follow the self-determination, the human rights and the territorial autonomy that you have over your homeland,” he said

Virginia Mearns, who was appointed Canada’s Arctic ambassador last summer will be joined in Nuuk by France’s Jean-Noël Poirier, who took up his post Friday as consul general to the autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark, following a high-profile visit by President Emmanuel Macron in December. (France and Canada want them to stay with Denmark, they are being lied to, no one cared about them for decades and now they are important?)

“Canada is a partner and a friend here, and we have a very constant dialogue with them,” a French diplomat told POLITICO on the condition they not be named to discuss relations in Greenland.

Anand arrived in Nuuk from Copenhagen where she met with Denmark’s Foreign Affairs Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. On Friday afternoon, she met her Greenland counterpart, Vivian Motzfeldt, and heard “just how worried Greenlanders are” about the future.

Anand pointed to Russia’s expanding footprint and the negative effects of climate change.

“The Russian infrastructure has been moving further and further north towards the Arctic Circle. What that means is we have to adopt a cooperative approach to Arctic defense and security,” Anand said.

“Minister Motzfeldt and I discussed that the ski slopes here are having a hard time opening because there’s not enough snow, and that they have concerns about the effects that climate change is having on their economy … and, of course, from a defense and security standpoint.”

U.S. judge unfreezes funding for $16 billion New York City tunnel project

Published Sat, Feb 7 20268:36 AM ESTUpdated Sat, Feb 7 20265:30 PM

A New York federal judge on Friday unfroze funds withheld by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration for a $16 billion project to overhaul critical rail infrastructure in New York and ‍New Jersey.

The Gateway Project will build a new ‍commuter rail tunnel between Manhattan and New Jersey ‍and repair a century-old tunnel used by more than 200,000 travelers and 425 trains daily. The existing Hudson Tunnel was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012and needs frequent emergency repairs that disrupt travel on the nation’s most heavily used passenger rail line.

U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas in Manhattanhanded down the temporary ruling hours ‌after‌New York and New Jersey said construction would halt for lack of funding.

Vargassaid the states were likely to succeed on their claims that a Trump administration directive freezing the funds was arbitrary and ran afoul of legal procedures for making policy changes. The White House and Department of Transportation did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the ruling.

New Jersey Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport and New York Attorney General Letitia James issued statements praising the ruling.

“The Trump Administration must drop this campaign of political retribution immediately and must allow work on this vital infrastructure project to continue,” Davenport said. The states said in a January 3 lawsuit that Trump’s Republican administration had frozen the funds in a “brazen act of political retribution” against their Democratic leaders. They said a work stoppage would hold up a crucial infrastructure project, damage their economies and saddle them with costs from securing idled construction sites.

The Trump administration has withheld $205 million in reimbursements for the project since October 1.Trump has reportedly demanded that Washington Dulles Airport and New York’s Penn Station be renamed for him in exchange for unfreezing the funds, drawing strong criticism from Democrats. He told reporters on Friday that he had not proposed renaming Dulles or Penn Station. Trump did not comment on Vargas’ decision. (That sounds like a big fat NY Lie!)

The Department of Transportation said on September 30 that it froze the funds pending a review of the project’s compliance with new prohibitions against race- and sex-based considerations in contracting decisions.

The Gateway Development Commission informed the department that it had made changes and conducted a review to ensure compliance with the regulations but has not heard back, according to the lawsuit.

Gateway said the suspension would idle 1,000 construction workers and that Trump’s decision had endangered passengers who had to rely on “decaying, century-old rail infrastructure.”

Gateway had previously said work was already suspended. Democrats criticize Trump for withholding funds

Trump last month asked U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer to back renaming Washington Dulles Airport and Penn Station, but the New York Democrat told the White House he did not have the power to rename them, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.Trump told reporters on Friday that Schumer had proposed renaming Penn Station and said “numerous people” had suggested renaming Dulles. Schumer called Trump’s claim about Penn Station an “absolute lie” in a social media post.

U.S. Senator Cory Booker, a Democrat ‍from New Jersey, told a press conference near the project on Fridaythat Trump was holding the tunnel hostage because he “seems to want to put his name on everything.” Since returning to office in January, the Republican president has affixed his name to prominent Washington buildings, a planned class of Navy warships, a visa program for wealthy foreigners, a government-run prescription drug website, and federal savings accounts for children.

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat, called Trump’s suggestion ridiculous. These naming rights aren’t tradable as part of any negotiations, and neither is the dignity of New Yorkers … The president continues to put his own narcissism over the good-paying union jobs this project provides and the extraordinary economic ‌impact the Gateway tunnel will bring.”

The project was allocated about $15 billion in federal support under former President Joe Biden. Nearly $2 billion has been spent on the project so far.

Fifteen years

February 8, 2026 | Sundance |

(Thanks Sundance, it's been a blast and will be a blast as long as it lives. Congratulations(

We recently passed the fifteen-year anniversary of our assembly here at The Conservative Treehouse. Fifteen years of a conversation that continues; a conversation that questions; a journey upon the road less travelled. This odd little band of misfits, carrying on a conversation in the corner of a vast internet where pretenses drop and ordinary labels used to retain comfortability just don’t seem to stick.

Factually and embarrassingly, amid the whirlwind of sand through life’s hourglass I would not have noticed the date if site admin Wee-Weed didn’t draw attention to it, and I thank her for creating the pause.

Ad Rem, Stella, Menagerie and Wee-Weed are incredible moderators, always finding a way to guide the ship through fog, with a gentle nudge when needed. As a community we are blessed and thankful for their stewardship.

Two website platforms. 15 years. 48,349 articles. 5,128,351 voices in the comments. Visits from every country on the globe. These are the simple statistics of our assembly, yet the value of the conversation cannot be quantified. A loving God has a voice here. We listen. We are all vessels.

There are a lot of different things that can be said when anniversaries are celebrated; however, for our assembly my thoughts are about God and you. All of you, the commonality of you, us, all of us together in this discussion – no pretenses. The journey is the discussion, and the conversation is the point.

You see things differently than most. If you did not, you would not be here. You accept things as they are, not as the crowd would pretend them to be. If you did not, you would not be here. You see the deeper stuff and together we understand that perspective can lead to isolation when the truth cuts against the popularity of the thing. If it didn’t, you would not be here.

You value the truth in all its discomfort, and you have developed a keen perception that leads to articulate questions. If you did not you would not be here. You see the dots and yet you retain a perspective distance, permitting you to see the full picture instead of an image of random pixels. If you did not carry this inherent skill, you would not have found your way here.

You are almost certainly curious, inquisitive and instinctual. You also perceive more because you allow yourself to perceive more, and that is an incredible strength when you consider the luring comfort of the crowd you passed by on your way here.

Your instincts, your senses, your discernment is honed because these things are derived from our journey beside God. Ultimately, it is He who sharpens the saw of discernment while fueling the sense to remain stable while peering into the fury.

You travel with a mindset guided by natural laws and your willingness to accept being connected to something much larger than self. Yet our insignificance does not diminish our merit or worth because we know the equity of His grace.

We all hold value. We are all loved beyond our imagining. We are never alone.

You are an exceptionally intelligent person, carrying great wisdom and value. Your voice, your articulation, your sense and knowledge of the topic is profoundly unique, deep and abundantly evident when you are in a gathering.

Thank you for being here; for being you; for making this journey -this conversation- better, because you choose discovery over complacency.

I cherish our assembly and remain steadfast on the journey.

With abiding love and appreciation,

NHK projects LDP has secured a two-thirds majority in the Lower House

3 hours ago =1/2==

NHK's decision desk projects the ruling Liberal Democratic Party has secured a two-thirds majority in the Lower House on its own.(01:10)

Ruling coalition projected to secure two-thirds majority.(00:50)

NHK projections also show that two smaller opposition parties, Sanseito and Team Mirai, are making gains. The largest opposition party, the Centrist Reform Alliance, may lose around half its seats.

Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae spoke with NHK about her plans for the government. She said: "I think the current Cabinet is a good team. It's still only just over three months since it was launched, but the members have been working really hard and are producing results. So I don't think I will change it. Most parties are in favor of reducing the consumption tax, such as reducing the tax on food items to zero, or to 5 percent, or reducing the tax on all items to 5 percent. The LDP has also campaigned for a consumption tax cut. I strongly want to call for the establishment of a supra-party forum to speed up discussion on this, as it is a big issue."

A coalition with a two-thirds majority would be able to pass bills rejected by the Upper House. Proposals to amend the Constitution also need that level of support in both chambers before going to a referendum.

Opposition leaders spoke to NHK about the results so far.Sanseito President Kamiya Sohei said: "We were able to field 182 candidates in this election, one in each district. It was a big challenge for our party. We will examine the results, such as the percentage of votes we gained, and build a system that will allow us to perform well in single-seat constituencies nationwide. I think creating an organization that is competent for ground battles will lead to the party's expansion."

Team Mirai Leader Anno Takahiro said: "I am relieved to have achieved our goal of winning five or more seats. Our party has had only one seat up to now, but from tomorrow, we can work as a team and can work in real terms. During our campaign, we insisted that the reduction of social insurance premiums should be given priority over consumption tax cuts. I understand that gaining so many votes means that the public to some extent supports our proposal.I would like Prime Minister Takaichi to take this into consideration in advancing her plan to create a forum to discuss taxes and other issues."

NHK data shows the largest opposition party, theCentrist Reform Alliance, may lose around half its seats.

Noda Yoshihiko, a CRA Co-President, told NHK: "I think we must take the will of many voters seriously and humbly. Severe results are coming out, and I think we have to be humble to receive them. The overall picture of the outcome remains to be seen and I am hoping that our candidates win as many seats as possible. I would like to say more after the final results are unveiled. In any case, I have a certain resolution in my mind. But I will consult with other senior members and respond to the situation considering the party's future."

We will examine the final outcome later and hold talks with senior officials. I think that the forming of the centrist alliance this time was very important for Japan's politics. I think we should create a new system to maintain and expand it."

Some of the CRA's big names have suffered. NHK's decision desk projects that Ozawa Ichiro has lost his seat== in Iwate District 3.

He spent 19 terms(?) in the Lower House and served as the LDP's secretary-general.

Japan Lower House Election: LDP secures more than enough seats for majority(JST22:35)

NHK's decision desk says the ruling Liberal Democratic Party has surged past the threshold for a majority on its own and could even gain 300 seats in the Lower House.

That will keep Prime Minister TakaichiSanae in powerProjections also show that theruling coalition could secure 310 seats, giving it a two-thirds majority, when seats from junior partner the Japan Innovation party are included.

LDP Policy Research Council Chairperson Kobayashi Takayuki said: "I personally think that voters welcomed Prime Minister and LDP leader Takaichi Sanae's agenda to build a strong economy through strategic investments under responsible, proactive fiscal policy. She placed this idea in the center of the LDP's campaign pledges."

NHK data also shows that the largest opposition party, the Centrist Reform Alliance, may lose around half its seats.

Nakano Hiromasa, CRA Co-Secretary General, said:"I think we have to take the results humbly and seriously, although the final results have yet to come and are being projected. Vote counting is still ongoing in many districts that are closely contested. I will keep closely watching developments, hoping our candidates win as many seats as possible."

The CRA's other co-secretary-general, Azumi Jun,is projected to lose his seat.

Sources have told NHK that Azumi intends to step down from the party post. This comes as projections show theparty may lose about half its seats, including Azumi's in Miyagi District 4.

NHK's decision desk says the ruling Liberal Democratic Party will secure a majority on its own and could even reach 300 seats in the Lower House.

That would keep Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae in power.

Combined with the seats from its junior partner, the Japan Innovation Party, the ruling coalition could even secure 310, giving it a two-thirds majority.

Mark Cuban Responds to TrumpRX Launch, Says His Cost Plus Drugs Saves More Money''

(CUBAN IS REVEALING THAT THE RX COMPANIES COULD HAVE REDUCED THEIR PRICES BY MUCH MORE THAN TO TRUMP AND GOVERNMENT PLAN. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT IS A FAVOR OR COMPETITION. People will ask why RFKJR didn't dot this.)

On a panel,Mark Cuban and Medicare’s director debatedthe best paths to slashing prescription costs.

BY KEVIN HAYNES, NEWS WRITER Feb 8, 2026

Mark Cuban’s latest prescription for dramatically lowering drug prices: break up the insurance giants that prioritize profits over consumer pleas to cut costs. “Those big insurance companies are too big to care,” Cuban told U.S. Medicare Director Chris Klomp during a panel discussion at Friday’s Silicon Slopes Summit in Salt Lake City.

Their conversation proved timely. The previous night marked the launch of TrumpRX, a low-cost drug website that President Trump said will have “a real and immediate impact” on the price of 43 brand-name medications. By comparison, 40 of those drugs are cheaper than the cost listed on rival sites like GoodRX. However, no generics are available onTrumpRX and all transactions are cash-only—no purchases can be made through insurance programs.

More drugs are expected to be added to the new platform, but the current total pales in comparison to the 6,000 meds already available on Cuban’s website, Cost Plus Drugs, which offers generic options that are far less expensive than the brand names-only listed on TrumpRX—typically, $6 to $12 instead of $200.

“I’m a supporter of TrumpRx, but they reduce brand prices by 500 percent or 1,000 percent, while ‘CubanRx’ reduces prices by 1,500 percent,” Cuban said, in a seemingly friendly joke at Trump’s tendency to tout cuts far higher than the mathematically possible 100 percent, which slashes the price to zero.

“Of the drugs we both carry, we are cheaper on 90%,” Cuban claimed in an X post. “That said, credit where credit is due. They crushed it on IVF drugs. That’s going to be a lifesaver for a lot of couples.”

Medicare’s Klomp, whose mother died of cancer when he was 13, said the best way to guarantee lower prices on more drugs is through Congressional legislation. “This is personal,” he said, noting that 65 percent of Americans have a chronic disease and 75 percent are overweight. “We are objectively the least healthy we have ever been as a country.”

But Cuban said consumers shouldn’t have to wait for a notoriously inert Congress to act. His suggested solution: break up the pharma giants that tightly control prices, order drug manufacturers to sell at net prices to wholesalers, establish Medicare rates and guarantee deductibles for people who can’t afford them.

Cuban and Klomp also offered some healthy advice to anyone interested in living a better life: Do something good, something that pays off in ways that have nothing to do with money. “Don’t waste your time on things that don’t make the world better,” Klomp said. “Alleviate human suffering.”
