British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is fighting for his political life, and speculation about his replacement has centered on an unlikely figure: Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who would become Britain’s first Muslim prime minister if elevated to the role.
Starmer’s troubles stem from his December 2024 decision to appoint Peter Mandelson, a veteran Labour grandee, as Britain’s ambassador to Washington — despite allegedly knowing about Mandelson’s friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. Newly released Epstein documents revealed Mandelson maintained contact with the convicted sex offender after his 2008 guilty plea, allegedly shared sensitive government information with him, and received $75,000 in payments, according to the Financial Times.
Mandelson has resigned from the House of Lords and faces a police investigation for misconduct in public office, the BBC reported.
Starmer’s chief of staff resigned Sunday, taking responsibility for advising the appointment. His communications director followed Monday morning. Then Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar — facing a catastrophic May election — became the most senior party leader to publicly demand Starmer quit, calling for “the distraction to end” in a statement to The Times. Sarwar had been a Starmer ally.
International headlines have crowned Shabana Mahmood as Starmer’s likely successor, but betting markets disagree. The 45-year-old Home Secretary sits fifth in Polymarket’s odds, behind former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, and former Labour leader Ed Miliband.
Her name keeps surfacing for two reasons. First, she holds one of the great offices of state, running the department responsible for immigration and security — high-visibility work that projects “prime ministerial” in ways that, for example, overseeing energy policy does not. Second, she represents an unusual political paradox.
Mahmood, born in Birmingham to Pakistani-Kashmiri parents, identifies openly as a “Blue Labour” social conservative and an immigration hardliner. She’s introduced what she calls “the most substantial reform to the UK’s asylum system in a generation,” including a 20-year pathway to permanent residency for asylum seekers, proposals to restrict European Convention on Human Rights protections, and visa sanctions on countries that won’t accept deportees.

Elon Musk on Sunday offered to pay the legal fees of any Epstein survivor sued for speaking the “truth” in regards to naming who was responsible for their abuse.
“I will pay for the defense of anyone who speaks the truth about this and is sued for doing so,” Musk wrote in a post on the social platform X, which he owns.
His statement followed a Super Bowl ad aired by Epstein survivors that alleged more than 3 million documents tied to the disgraced financier’s estate have not been released.
The group of women behind the ad called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to make the additional files public for consumption and review.
After the ad aired, conservative commentator Matt Walsh asked why the Epstein survivors didn’t openly name their abusers.
“They profess to know the names of child rapists in the most powerful positions in society yet they won’t tell us. They’ll even take out a Super Bowl ad while claiming to be silenced, even though they’re the ones refusing to give us the information they say they have,” Walsh wrote in a post on X, questioning why the Epstein files became a major topic at the conclusion of the Biden administration.
“For those claiming that they can’t name names because they’ll be sued: they could simply give the names to any of their many (and mostly very recent ) advocates in Congress, who could read the names out loud from the floor, insulating themselves and these women from any litigation. But they refuse to do that. Why?” he wrote in a follow up post.
Musk responded to Walsh’s last post with the offer to cover legal fees.

A group of music agents at Wasserman are demanding that founder and CEO Casey Wasserman step down from the company after his connection to Jeffrey Epstein and racy emails with convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell surfaced last week.
Additionally, Grammy-winning superstar Chappell Roan, who is represented by the agency, is expected to leave Wasserman imminently over the matter, a knowledgeable individual told TheWrap. Billie Eilish left the agency a year ago over revelations of the CEO’s alleged extramarital affairs.
According to two individuals who spoke to TheWrap, the music agents include Duffy McSwiggin, SVP of Music at Wasserman, senior agent Marty Diamond and several others.
McSwiggin represents Joni Mitchell, OK Go and Lake Street Dive. Diamond represents Coldplay and other acts.
The agents have presented Wasserman with an ultimatum to sell them the music business and leave or they will leave the agency, according to the individuals. Wasserman, originally a sports-focused agency, acquired the music business from Paradigm in 2021.
A spokesperson for Wasserman had no comment when reached by TheWrap. McSwiggin could not be reached for comment. A spokesperson for Roan did not get back to TheWrap before publication.
Wasserman has been under fire for the past week after his appearance in the latest release of Epstein emails, including a set of racy emails with Maxwell, who was found guilty of child sex trafficking in 2021 and is now incarcerated. In one 2003 email, he wrote her: “I think of you all the time. So, what do I have to do to see you in a tight leather outfit?” Wasserman was married at the time.
