Braden John Karony Stole Millions of Dollars of Investor Assets to Fund Lavish Lifestyle

Earlier today, in federal court in Brooklyn, Braden John Karony, the Chief Executive Officer of SafeMoon US LLC, a digital asset company registered in Utah (SafeMoon) was sentenced by United States District Judge Eric Komitee to 100 months in prison for conspiracy to commit securities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering in connection with a scheme to defraud investors in a decentralized finance digital asset called “SafeMoon.” As part of the sentence, Karony was ordered to forfeit approximately $7.5 million. The amount of restitution to the victims will be determined at a later date. Karony was convicted by a federal jury following a three-week trial in May 2025. The jury also issued a verdict to forfeit two residential properties.

Political Operative Sentenced to 4 Years in Federal Prison for Acting as Covert Agent of People’s Republic of China

LOS ANGELES – A San Bernardino County man was sentenced today to 48 months in federal prison for acting as an illegal agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), including while serving as the campaign advisor for a political candidate who was elected to the city council of a Southern California city.

Yaoning “Mike” Sun, 65, of Chino Hills, was sentenced by United States District Judge R. Gary Klausner. Sun pleaded guilty in October 2025 to one count of acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government.

“Federal law enforcement will not allow hostile foreign nations to infiltrate the governance of our nation’s political bodies,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli. “The relentlessness of PRC intelligence operations in our country must be met by equal relentlessness on our part to secure, protect, and defend the United States.”

“When Americans vote for elected officials, they expect them to represent the interests of their constituents – not those of a foreign adversary like the Chinese government,” said Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky of the FBI's Counterintelligence and Espionage Division. “By exploiting his position as a campaign advisor, Yaoning Sun attempted to undermine our political processes and democratic institutions for the benefit of the Chinese Communist Party. Today’s sentencing underscores the unwavering commitment of the FBI and our partners to defending the homeland and holding accountable anyone who tries to subvert the will of American voters at the behest of our adversaries.”

According to court documents, from at least 2022 to January 2024, Sun knowingly acted within the United States as an agent of the PRC and officials of its government – without notifying the Attorney General, as required by U.S. law.

At the direction and control of PRC government officials, Sun coordinated with U.S.-based individuals to promote the PRC’s interests by, among other things, “orchestrat[ing]” a team to help elect a politician identified in court documents as “Individual 1” to political office and promoting pro-PRC propaganda in the United States.

Sun also closely surveilled the then-President of Taiwan during her April 2023 visit to Southern California, reporting directly to PRC officials on her movements.

At the direction of PRC officials, from 2020 through 2023, Sun and Individual 1 worked together to operate a purported news website for the local Chinese American community. Sun and Individual 1 received and executed directives from PRC government officials to post pro-PRC content.

Former California State Correctional Lieutenant Arrested On Charges Of Smuggling Contraband Into Prison

SAN JOSE – A former California state correctional lieutenant was arrested today on charges of conspiring to smuggle contraband into state prison in exchange for approximately $100,000 in payments from an inmate.

Matthew L. Madsen, 39, of Greenfield, Calif., made his initial appearance in federal district court in San Jose this afternoon.

According to the criminal complaint filed Feb. 4, 2026, and unsealed today, Madsen was employed by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from 2017 to 2025, during which time he primarily worked at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad, Calif. Cellular devices are not permitted in California state prisons because they can be used to circumvent the mandatory screening of communications into and out of institutions, and have been used by inmates to plan violent attacks and the smuggling and trafficking of contraband, including narcotics. Accordingly, like all state correctional employees, Madsen was obligated to prevent the introduction of contraband into the prison, confiscate any contraband located in the prison, and report its presence. The complaint alleges that Madsen violated these obligations and smuggled items, including cellular devices and tobacco, into Salinas Valley State Prison at the request of an inmate and in exchange for payments totaling approximately $100,000.

United States Attorney Craig H. Missakian and FBI Special Agent in Charge Sanjay Virmani made the announcement.

Madsen was released on bond. He is next scheduled to appear in district court on Feb. 17, 2026, for a status hearing.

A complaint merely alleges that crimes have been committed, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, the defendant faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for the count of honest services fraud in violation of 18 U.S.C. §§ 1343, 1346, and 1349. Any sentence following conviction would be imposed by the court after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing the imposition of a sentence, 18 U.S.C. § 3553.

Lawrence refused, and he got fired because of it. "I didn't do that, and my agency fired me because I left this director's room," he said.

Yet when men come out with the same sexual allegations as women in the industry, they receive little support. "A lot of these stories, a lot of my other male friends have gone through with both men and women in this industry, but there's a double standard, and this is where I bring Terry Crews. Terry Crews comes out and says it; people are laughing at him," Lawrence said.

In 2016, Crews said a male executive groped his genitals in front of his wife and "grinned like a jerk" at their reactions. He wanted to retaliate but was worried that he would get reported and get sent to jail. "'240 lbs. Black Man Stomps Out Hollywood Honcho' would be the headline the next day," Crews wrote. US Maritime Administration Tells US-Flagged Ships To Stay Away From Iran’s Territorial Waters

The warning came after the US alleged that Iranian gunboats approached a US-flagged ship in the Strait of Hormuz

The US Maritime Administration (MARAD) said in an advisory issued on Monday that US-flagged vessels should stay away from Iran’s territorial waters, a warning that comes as the US has built up forces in the region to prepare for a potential attack on the Islamic Republic.

“It is recommended that US-flagged commercial vessels transiting these waters remain as far as possible from Iran’s territorial sea without compromising navigational safety,” MARAD said. “When transiting eastbound in the Strait of Hormuz, it is recommended that vessels transit close to Oman’s territorial sea.”

The advisory came after the US military alleged that a US-flagged ship was approached by Iranian gunboats that threatened to board the vessel in the Strait of Hormuz and that the US ship was then escorted by a US Navy guided-missile destroyer. That same day, a F-35 fighter jet from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln shot down an Iranian drone in the Arabian Sea.

MARAD said that US-flagged commercial vessels navigating in the area should “coordinate voyage planning with U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) Naval Cooperation and Guidance for Shipping (NCAGS) and consider their recommendations and guidance whenever possible.”

During the 12-day US-Israeli war against Iran in June 2025, the Iranian parliament voted to close the Strait of Hormuz as a retaliatory measure, which would have a huge impact on global oil shipping, but a ceasefire was reached a few days later. Restricting shipping in the Strait remains an option for Iran if it comes under another US or Israeli attack.

Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that if President Trump follows through on his threats to bomb Iran, Iranian missiles would target US bases in the region, and it’s unlikely that Tehran will give the US notice of its plans to attack as it did when it targeted the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar following US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
