Vance signs nuclear cooperation deal with Armenia

Vice President JD Vance has arrived in Armenia as part of ongoing efforts to help end the nearly 40-year conflict with Azerbaijan.

On Monday, Vance landed in the capital city of Yerevan, where he met with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, becoming the first sitting U.S. vice president to visit Armenia.

He touched on some of the ways the United States is helping build up Armenia to be one of our strongest allies.

“The United States was proud to issue a number of export licenses for the sale of high powered Nvidia chips. What does that mean?” Vance questioned. “That means new markets for American workers and for American businesses but it also means greater prosperity for the people of Armenia. These are chips that simply do not exist in most countries in the world. They are now going to be developed and the data centers using those chips are going be built and in fact are already being built because of the prime minister’s leadership.”

The two leaders also signed a nuclear partnership to allow American and Armenian companies to work together on civil nuclear projects.

“That means up to $5 billion in initial U.S. exports plus an additional $4 billion in long term support through fuel and maintenance contracts,” the vice president stated. “This is the classic win-win for Armenia and the United States of America.”

This comes after Armenia and Azerbaijan signed an agreement in August, with the help of President Donald Trump, to establish the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP).

The proposed corridor would connect Azerbaijan with one of its territorial enclaves through Armenian territory.

The two nations have fought for nearly 40 years over the proposed land bridge — a dispute President Trump has sought to resolve since returning to office.

“This inter-connectedness, this economic development is good for prosperity but it’s also good for peace,” Vance stated. “The United States is certainty going to play a very positive and constructive role in this, but I don’t think money is the issue. I think there’s actually a lot of capital interest in this particular project. There are a lot of people in the world who think they can make a good return on investment by investing in Armenia and investing in this TRIPP project.”

Vance said his love for Armenia goes deeper than his good relationship with the nation’s prime minister as his affinity for the Eurasian nation stems from its history as the oldest Christian nation in the world.

“This is one of the oldest Christian countries in the entire world – a true bedrock of Christian civilization and culture,” Vance said. “As a devout Christian myself, I know the meaning of this country to the entire world and to the religion that the prime minister and I share. So, to the people of Armenia and the great prime minister I want to thank you for your partnership. President Donald Trump is committed to this partnership and so am I and we’re thrilled to be here to take the next step. God bless you.”

The vice president said he hopes their new economic and security partnership will make Armenia a formidable ally going forward.
