Russian energy cut key to EU economic woes – Macron
The bloc has been grappling with surging costs since moving from cheap Russian gas to growing reliance on American LNG
TheEU has entered “emergency mode”over soaring energy costs after cutting back on Russian pipeline gas supplies and becoming increasingly dependent on the US,French President Emmanuel Macron has warned.
The bloc has seen a surge in energy prices since scaling back Russian oil and gas imports after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. Moving away from relatively cheap Russian pipeline gas has forced it to rely more heavily on energy supplies from the US.
Speaking at the European Industry Summit in Belgiumon Wednesday, Macronsaid that the EU remains dangerously exposed to energy shortages and market volatility. He explained that a combination of high costs, disrupted supply chains, andgrowing dependence on external partners signals that economic challenges are likely to persist.
“In fact, cheap Russian energy came to an end in 2022. And there’s no going back,”Macron stated, adding, “We haven’t really sorted out this issue up to now.”
Before the Ukraine conflict, the EU imported 45% of its gas from Russia – its largest foreign supplier since the end of the Cold War. Western sanctions and sabotage of key infrastructure have slashed Russian gas deliveries,although purchases of Russian LNG by EU countries remain significant.New legislationpassed last month requires member states tostop all Russian energy imports by the end of 2027, further increasing what Macron described as the bloc’s “dangerous” exposure to supply risks.
The French president also warned that pressure from Washington is compounding the EU’s economic strain, saying the bloc is “clearly in emergency mode” as the US approach becomes “more and more confrontational.”
US President Donald Trump has used energy as leverage in trade talks, with the EU agreeing last July to buy $750 billion of American energy by 2028 to avoid higher tariffs.
”The fact that the United States is slapping tariffs and cohesion mechanisms on our economy is a game changer,” Macron said. “It’s not a temporary shock, it’s clearly a structural turning point.”
Macron added thatthe EU can no longer rely on China as a key export market, warning that surging Chinese shipments to the bloc have reversed long-standing trade balances.
Industry leaders have urged Brussels to “take urgent measures,” warning that the EU “is losing industrial capacity at a speed we have never seen before.” (but they still give billions of dollars to the Ukraine war that has already been lost to Russia.)
Moscow has said Western nations are hurting their own economies by choosing costlier and less reliable alternatives.

The prime minister has blasted the EU’s reported plan to make Ukraine a member in spite of Budapest’s objections
Brussels and Kiev have declared war on Budapest, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said. His comments come amid reports thatthe EU is seeking to offer Ukraine a form of 'membership lite,’ despite the opposition of certain member states.
According to Politico,EU officials want to relax admission criteria and offer Kiev limited privilegesin a membership offerscheduled for 2027. Orban has been identified as the main obstacle to the controversial move,with sources suggesting he must be removed in Hungary's forthcoming election, whether through foreign pressure or EU procedures suspending Budapest’s voting rights.
“This new plan is an open declaration of war against Hungary. They disregard the decision of the Hungarian people and are determined to remove the Hungarian government by any means necessary,”Orban wrote on X on Wednesday.
He urged supporters to mobilize for his Fidesz party ahead of April’s parliamentary election, which Politico called a potential opportunity for Brussels to neutralize its long-time critic.
Kiev seeks to pursue EU accession as early as next year as part of a US-mediated peace deal with Russia. While Vladimir Zelensky has publicly rejected second-tier membership, Politico reports that Ukrainian officials have privately expressed interest.
Orban’s government says Brussels’ support for Kiev draws the EU closer to direct war with Russiaand ignores Ukraine’s failure to meet requirements for candidates.
Zelenskyhas repeatedly attacked Orban for refusing to back Kiev, suggesting he is ‘pro-Russian.’ Last month, at the World Economic Forum, hesuggested the Hungarian leader should be “smacked” for allegedly selling out EU interests. Orban has called such remarks election interference.

Modern Ukraine has built its identity on a cult of mass murderers during World War II, the Polish Institute of National Remembrance has said. The X post on Tuesday came inresponse to the head of a similar Ukrainian state body calling the WWII-era Volhynia Massacre a myth perpetuated by Warsaw.
The Volhynia Massacre refers toevents in 1943-45, when units of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army= (UPA), which collaborated with the Nazis, systematically slaughtered ethnic Poles in what is now western Ukraine.==
In a major interview with Ukrainskaya Pravda, the head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance,Aleksandr Alferov, dismissed the mass killings as “one of the state-building myths of Poland.”
Alferov also called the tragedy a “local episode” of Ukrainian history and claimed that thenumber of victims cited by Warsaw was based on “oral testimony” and not facts. The official acted as aspokesman for the infamous neo-Nazi Azov unit between 2014 and 2015. He attained his present position in July 2025.
The Polish instituteblasted Alferov’s words as “outrageous” and called the Volhynia Massacre “a documented fact” that cannot be invalidated by “political calculation.”
“Over 100,000 murdered Polish nationals – mostly women, children, and the elderly – do not make this an ‘episode’, but rather one of the largest genocidesagainst civilians in 20th-century Europe,” its statement said.
The institute also expressed its concerns that the UPA, as well as the linkedOrganization of Ukrainian Nationalists – a group that also collaborated with the Nazis– are venerated in modern Ukraine,and their leaders are seen as heroes.
“The fact that the modern Ukrainian state builds elements of its identity on the cult of individuals and organizations responsible for these crimes, rejecting the facts recorded in publicly available historical sources, is… disturbing,” it said.
The issue has been a thorn in relations between Kiev and Warsaw, one of Ukraine’s key backers in the conflict with Moscow, and has also drawn condemnation from Israel. Russia has also repeatedly accused the current Ukrainian leadership of embracing Nazism and whitewashing known WWII-era collaborators.
(Poland should have never have funded the Ukraine at war with Russia, because they were funding Nazi’s and worse. Poland must be dense, to even think that Ukraine leaders were be grateful or polite. If the EU lets the rats in Ukraine in the EU, the EU will lose and stuck with their killers.)

Speaker Mike Johnson says he has asked retiring Rep. Neal Dunn to serve out his term amid concerns the Florida Republican might resign early.
An early exit from Dunn, 72, would deal Johnson another massive blow as he tries to maintain his narrow majority. Currently, Republicans can afford to lose no more than one GOP vote on party-line measures, though they are expected to pick up a vote in a March special election.
Senior House Republicans believe Dunn intends to step down in the coming months despite an effort to get him to stay, according to three people granted anonymity to describe the private discussions.
“Neal Dunn is a beloved member of Congress and a great man, and you know,he’s informed us he’s not going to run for reelection,” Johnson told reporters Wednesday. As for what Dunn does beyond that, he added, “I’m not sure — you need to ask him about it.But I’ve encouraged him to stay and be a part of this, and I think he wants to do that.”
Dunn, who represents a heavily Republican seat in northern Florida, declined to discuss his intentions in an interview Wednesday: “No comment,” he said.
Dunn has worn a mask on the House floor at times in recent weeks, and some of his colleagues said they believe his health is a factor in his decision. Asked about those concerns, Dunn replied, “Don’t I look good?”

RepublicanSen. Thom Tillis slammed the Justice Department’s push to criminally charge Democratic lawmakerswho last November urged military servicemembers to disobey illegal orders in a video,calling it “political lawfare” in a post on X on Wednesday.
A Washington, D.C., grand jury on Tuesday declined to indict the six lawmakers, who include battleground state Sens. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) and Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.). It marked another instance of U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro failing to clinch a high-profile federal indictment since taking over as the top prosecutor in D.C.
“Political lawfare waged by either side undermines America’s criminal justice system, which is the gold standard of the world,” Tillis wrote. “Thankfully in this instance, a jury saw the attempted indictments for what they really were. Political lawfare is not normal, not acceptable, and needs to stop.”give me a break this criminal is lecturing others?==
The White House referred POLITICO to the Department of Justice, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the North Carolina Republican’s social media post.
Kelly and Slotkin were joined in the video by Pennsylvania Democratic Reps. Chris Deluzio and Chrissy Houlahan, and also Reps. Jason Crow of Colorado and Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire.
“Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this Constitution,” they said. “Right now, the threats to our Constitution aren’t just coming from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can refuse illegal orders.”
In a Truth Social spree that followed, President Donald Trump called for the lawmakers to face trial for “seditious behavior” and reshared a post that advocated for hanging the Democrats.

This isn’t the first time Pirro has struggled to persuade a grand jury to indict subjects who draw the ire of the Trump administration. After a panel last August declined to grant a felony indictment against a former DOJ employee who threw a hoagie at a federal officer in Washington, she lamented that DC residents “were so used to crime” and “don’t even care about whether or not the law is violated” in an interview with Fox News.
“My office has been instructed to move for the highest crime possible, consistent with the law, the statute, and the evidence. And in that one case, in that particular article, we were on point,” she said. “But the grand jurors don’t take it so seriously. They’re like, ‘Ah, you know, whatever.’”

Now, according to Politico, federal judges in Texas are openly strategizing ways to work around that higher court ruling and keep giving bond releases to illegal aliens under the guise of “liberty interest.”===
POLITICO – […]two federal district court judges in Texas, who are bound by the New Orleans-based 5th Circuit’s ruling, said the 2-1 decision leftan opening for them tocontinue granting immigrants’ release on other grounds, primarily constitutional argumentsagainst detaining people who haveestablished roots in the U.S. without due process. Those roots amount,in legal parlance, to a “liberty interest” that the Constitution sayscannot be taken away without at least a hearing before a neutral judge.
“This conclusion is not changed by the Fifth Circuit’s recent decision,” Judge Kathleen Cardone, an El Paso based appointee of George W. Bush, ruled late Monday in at least five cases, concluding that the circuit’s decision“has no bearing on this Court’s determination of whether [the petitioner] is being detainedin violation of his constitutional right to procedural due process.”
Judge David Briones, an El Paso-based Clinton appointee, reached a similar conclusion.
“The Court reiterates its original holding that noncitizens who have ‘established connections’ in the United States by virtue of living in the country for a substantial period acquire a liberty interest in being free from government detention without due process of law,” Briones wrote.
The decisions from the Texas-based judges are notable in part because the administration has often rushed detainees there after their arrests in other states such as Minnesota.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A Justice Department official, granted anonymity to speak candidly,said the rulings were in keeping with the view that there are rogue judges who continue to make results-oriented decisions to suit their personal policy preferences.
The 5th Circuit’s ruling has yet to percolate through federal courts across Texas and Louisiana, where detained immigrants have been filing so-called “habeas” petitions in extraordinary numbers to seek freedom from what they say is illegal detention without the opportunity for bond.The losing parties in Friday’s ruling may still appealthe decision to the full bench of the 5th Circuit or the Supreme Court. US Attorney General Pam Bondi testified at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on the Epstein files, fatal shootings of two anti-ICE agitators and more.
Bondi clashed with several Democrat lawmakers as they interrupted her remarks.
At one point, Democrat Rep. Becca Balint lost her mind and began shouting at Bondi.
Bondi was asked whether Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick lying about his connection with Epstein is a dealbreaker for the Trump Administration.
Bondi responded with suggesting Rep. Balint is anti-Semitic.

Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday went off on House Judiciary Committee Democrats, calling Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) a “washed-up loser lawyer” when Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) pressed her on the Epstein files and crimes by Epstein affiliates.
After a nearly four-minute-long tirade about Trump weaponizing the Department of Justice, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, former FBI Director James Comey and other Democrat criminals, with”politically motivated investigations,” Nadler took aim at Bondi for the zero prosecutions of Epstein affiliates and coconspirators since taking office last year.
Bondi noted that he asked a “four-minute question,” and “I’m going to answer the question the way I want to answer the question.”
Nadler and the other Democrats did not allow Bondi to respond to Nadler’s attack on President Trump after Nadler asked, “How many of Epstein’s coconspirators have you indicted? How many perpetrators are you even investigating?” Eventually, Democratic Ranking Member Jamie Raskin chimed in, stating, “You can let her filibuster all day long, but not on our watch.” He continued, “And I told you about that, Attorney General, before you started.”
Then, Bondi went off, shouting back at him, “You don’t tell me anything, you washed-up loser lawyer! You’re not even a lawyer.”
Eventually, Bondi responded to Nadler’s hostile line of questioning, slamming the Democrats for attempting to impeach President Trump twice, and highlighting Trump’s accomplishments, namely the stock market highs, which prompted more screaming and laughing from the Democrats.
“What does the Dow have to do with anything? That’s what they just asked? Are you kidding?” Bondi responded. “The Dow has shattered 50,000 for the first time. This is crazy. They said it couldn’t be done in four years, yet, President Trump has done it in one year.”
She further highlighted Trump’s success on crime and the border, concluding, “That’s what we should be focused on, all the great work that this President has done and will continue to do to keep America safe and to make Americans safe.”
