Antisemitism in Australia 'frightening' says Israeli President Isaac Herzog ahead of Melbourne visit
Israeli President Isaac Herzog says antisemitism in Australia is "frightening and worrying" ahead of what are expected to be large protests as he visits Melbourne.
Mr Herzog met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for talks in Canberra this week, saying his visit to the country in the wake of the Bondi terror attack had been "very emotional".
Police were preparing for thousands of people to gather in Melbourne's CBD to protest against Mr Herzog's visit today.
Details of his engagements in the city have not been publicly released.
This morning, Mr Herzog said he had been encouraged by his visit to the country, despite large protests in several cities.
"I am saying to my people and the Jewish people worldwide that I found an Australia that was different from what was depicted," he told Channel Seven.
"There is antisemitism. It is frightening and worrying, but there's also a silent majority of Australians who seek peace, who respect the Jewish community, and of course want a dialogue with Israel
