I'm fairly certain autism is largely a result of changing our life circumstances in much more significant ways than we have before. We appear to have failed to properly appreciate how important maintaining the orderly cycles of our lives is to sustaining our mental health. Having landed somewhere outside of the known world early in life myself, due largely to heavy computer use, I've since learned a lot of very interesting things about the world while attempting to understand what exactly happened (and more importantly how to reconnect with ordinary society). It has been a great deal harder than I expected, yet has also yielded far greater returns than imagined, as learning how to intentionally perform things which many never consider provides new opportunities for choice.
It is worth the effort.
