Judge Halts Trump Admin's $600 Million Public Health Funding Cut Targeting 4 Blue States

A federal judge on Thursday temporarily blocked the Trump administration from cutting more than $600 million in public health grants to four Democratic-led states, siding with the states’ argument that the cuts appeared politically motivated.

U.S. District Judge Manish Shah issued a 14-day temporary restraining order preventing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from rescinding the funds allocated to California, Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesota.

The ruling came a day after the states filed a lawsuit challenging the administration’s directive, with officials in the filing calling it unconstitutional.

The cuts, directed by the White House Office of Management and Budget under Director Russell Vought, mostly go to the Public Health Infrastructure Grant, which funds public health departments to recruit and train workers, improve organizational systems, and modernize data infrastructure.

HHS said in a notice to Congress that the grants are “inconsistent with agency priorities,” according to the filing.

The priorities include modernizing public health infrastructure and not supporting illegal immigration, the lawsuit states.

The states alleged the reductions were retaliation for their policies on immigration, “gender-affirming care for minors,” and other issues opposed by President Donald Trump.

Trump has said that agencies should stop paying sanctuary cities, and the Office of Management and Budget has said that it directed health officials to withdraw the $600 million from the states.

“Starting February 1, we’re not making any payments to sanctuary cities,” Trump said during a Jan. 13 speech in Detroit, referencing jurisdictions whose policies prohibit local authorities from cooperating with federal immigration agents.

Trump said that such cities “do everything possible to protect criminals at the expense of American citizens, and it breeds fraud and crime and all of the other problems that come. So we’re not making any payment to anybody that supports sanctuary.”

Shah wrote in his two-page order that the states had shown a likelihood of success in proving the cuts were “based on arbitrary, capricious or unconstitutional rationales.”

The judge found the states would suffer “irreparable harm” without the injunction, while the public interest favored maintaining the funding. The temporary restraining order keeps the grants flowing while the case proceeds.

The European Union is weighing plans to set up two military bases inside Ukraine to train fresh troops - a move Moscow has already warned could make them targets of military strikes.

The Kremlin made clear just a month ago: "The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns that the deployment of military units, military facilities, warehouses, and other infrastructure of Western countries on Ukrainian territory will be classified as foreign intervention, posing a direct threat to the security of not only Russia but also other European countries," according to the warning of spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

Western governments have already trained tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops over the course of the four-year grinding war with Russia - but this has been concentrated in countries like Britain, Denmark, and Poland.

On Thursday, Colonel General Andrey Serdyukov accused Europe of accelerating preparations for direct confrontation. "The militarization of Europe is continuing at an accelerated pace, openly aimed at preparing for a military confrontation with Russia," he said.

He added that "The territories are being rapidly fortified, and the relevant infrastructure is being improved."

The alleged 'NATOization' of Ukraine was a prime reason Moscow listed for going to war in the first place. Since Putin's 'special military operation' next door, the opposite trend has happened: NATO is firmly ensconced in Kiev, in terms of the billions in weapons, equipment, and funds already poured in.

Meanwhile, the EU has just this week approved a fresh $100 billion loan package for Ukraine.

Mexican Government Refuses to Recognize Cartel Drone Threat

The incident fits into a broader pattern of cartels deploying increasingly advanced drone technology for surveillance and smuggling near the border, capabilities they have refined through exposure to modern drone warfare tactics developed in Ukraine.

The alleged incursion renewed concern over the growing firepower and sophistication of organized crime groups in Mexico.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected claims of a drone incursion, stating there was no evidence of activity at the border.

Representative Veronica Escobar said drone incursions from Mexico are “nothing new,” noting they have occurred for years.

The Pentagon reports more than 1,000 drone incursions per month along the southern border, and more than 27,000 drone detections were recorded within 500 meters of the border in the last six months of 2024.

In one October case, customs officials seized a drone carrying 3.6 pounds of fentanyl pills. While there has never been a confirmed cartel drone attack on U.S. soil, surveillance and smuggling flights occur nearly every day.

Cartel expert Eduardo Guerrero says that, in addition to drones, Mexican cartels now possess armored vehicles, landmines, and grenade launchers.

He explained that they have surpassed Mexican authorities technologically because they can rapidly acquire advanced weaponry without bureaucratic constraints.

He described drones as fundamental to their strategy, especially when combined with artificial intelligence, giving criminal groups increasing battlefield-style advantages.

Drone weaponization in Mexico dates back to at least 2017, when authorities seized a commercial quadcopter carrying an improvised explosive device.

Since then, drones have been used for reconnaissance, drug and weapons trafficking, and targeted attacks. In parts of Michoacán, analysts have documented large-scale bombing campaigns using drones that displaced significant populations.

Australian police have admitted that Muslim worshippers had permission to perform prayers, as authorities face backlash about their forcible removal.

The New South Wales Police Force confirmed on Thursday that the worshippers had been told they could continue to worship, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

"The NSW police force has now become aware that a senior police officer had allowed a group of Muslim protesters to continue praying at Town Hall Square on Monday evening," said a spokesperson.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets against Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to Australia, leading to clashes with police at several locations.

"The senior officer was attempting to relay that message to other officers who were carrying out a move-on direction during what was a noisy, dynamic and fast-moving situation,” the spokesperson added.

Israel Launches New Raids into Southern Syria, Troops Fire on Civilians

New Israeli checkpoints established in Quneitra Governorate

Israel has launched new incursions into southwestern Syria since Wednesday night, first firing artillery toward a village in the northern part of Quneitra Governorate and then, Thursday morning, sending troops in outright.

New checkpoints were established by the IDF, with the first reportedly in Sayda al-Hanout, where they restricted the movement of villagers, and then another in Jabata al-Khashab, further north in Quneitra. Both checkpoints are likely temporary, as Israel tends to establish them, hassle locals for a few hours, then withdraw.

The northern checkpoint appears to have been a more serious problem for locals, as the Israeli troops fired on civilians and news reporters in the nearby village of Ofaniyah. There were no reports of casualties, but it is fairly unusual for a checkpoint to involve shooting at people in the next village over.

In addition to the ground operations in Quneitra, there were reports of increased activity by Israeli warplanes over the neighboring Daraa Governorate. Though drones overhead in Israel-adjacent parts of Syria are not uncommon, the warplanes are an unusual escalation, despite no attacks having yet been reported.

Israel invaded Syria in December of 2024, immediately following the ouster of the Assad government. The territory that Israel has claimed is largely within the demilitarized zone, in Quneitra, though their ground operations continue and often go substantially deeper into Syrian territory, targeting both Daraa and Quneitra as well as the Rif al-Damashq Governorate further north.

Syria and Israel have been in negotiations meant to reduce tensions in the region, though Israel has ruled out withdrawing from the demilitarized zone and are instead demanding Syria created a whole new one adjacent to the old, now-occupied one.

FORMER LABOR UNION TREASURER INDICTED FOR BANK FRAUD, EMBEZZLEMENT, AND FALSIFICATION OF UNION FINANCIAL REPORTS

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – Clarence Penny, 40, of Pace, Florida, was indicted by a federal grand jury charging him with eight counts of bank fraud, one count of embezzlement of labor union funds, and three counts of falsification of labor union reports. John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, announced the charges today.

Penny appeared for his arraignment in federal court before United States Magistrate Judge Hope T. Cannon on February 12, 2026, in Pensacola, Florida. Jury trial is scheduled for April 16, 2026, before District Court Judge M. Casey Rodgers.

If convicted, Penny faces up to 30 years’ imprisonment for each count of bank fraud; up to five years’ imprisonment for the embezzlement count; and up to one year imprisonment for each count of falsification of labor union reports.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Labor-Management Standards. Assistant United States Attorneys Brooke DiSalvo and Walter Narramore are prosecuting the case.

An indictment is merely an allegation by a grand jury that a defendant has committed a violation of federal criminal law and is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
