"Russia poisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny with a deadly toxin found in Ecuadorian dart frogs while he was in prison, the United Kingdom and European allies have said.
“Only the Russian state had the means, motive and opportunity to deploy this lethal toxin to target Navalny during his imprisonment in a Russian penal colony in Siberia, and we hold it responsible for his death,” it said.
"The U.K. worked with Sweden, France, the Netherlands and Germany.
"Navalny died in February 2024, after he was transferred to a high-security penal colony above the Arctic Circle, sparking speculation about whether the Kremin had killed him, which Moscow has repeatedly and vehemently denied.
"…The five governments said epibatidine, a potent neurotoxin found in the skin of poison dart frogs in South America and not naturally occurring in Russia, was identified in samples taken from Navalny’s body.
"His widow, Yulia Navalnaya, who is currently at the Munich Security Conference, said in a pot on X: “I was certain from the first day that my husband had been poisoned, but now there is proof: Putin killed Alexei with [a] chemical weapon. I am grateful to the European states for the meticulous work they carried out over two years and for uncovering the truth.”
"…He was also the target of an earlier poisoning with a nerve agent in 2020, which he blamed on the Kremlin, which again denied involvement in this attack."
