Q stated 1=2 and that 1 was the newspaper (past) and 2 was the rally (future). So maybe they were attempting to FF the first 'attempt' in the hopes of making security at the rally lax…thinking the main threat was over.
We also don't know what kind of threat. May not have meant bodily harm because they couldn't accomplish it but rather wanted to cause embarrassment as other anons have mentioned previously.
