Escalation: Iran, Russia, China To Hold Naval Drill In Flashpoint Strait Of Hormuz

Are Russia and China finally standing up to America's addiction to regime change wars in the Middle East? They appear to at least be flashing some muscle in this incredibly tense moment, as the US deploys no less than two nuclear-powered aircraft carriers to the region.

Russia, China, and Iran have deployed naval vessels to the Strait of Hormuz for joint exercises this week, Russian presidential aide Nikolay Patrushev announced Tuesday, according to Anadolu and Iran state media. This comes as Iran's elite IRGC Navy is already in day two of military drills in the vital oil transit point, having closed some sectors of the chokepoint.

In a fresh interview with Turkish media, Patrushev said Moscow is advancing a "multipolar world order on the oceans" to counter what he blasted as Western hegemony.

"We will tap into the potential of BRICS, which should now be given a full-fledged strategic maritime dimension," he said. These fresh mid-February drills are being called Maritime Security Belt 2026.

It turns out Russian and Chinese warships have already been in the region as part of prior Iran-hosted drills, and without doubt they've lingered to keep a very close eye on developments after President Trump started threatening Tehran over its nuclear as well as ballistic missiles programs.

Also coming off last month's BRICS naval drills in South Africa which were dubbed "Will for Peace 2026" - Chinese, Russian, and Iranian ships have in recent years showed deepened coordination and cooperation, in an increased number of joint drills.

"The Maritime Security Belt 2026 exercises in the Strait of Hormuz, where Russia, China, and Iran sent their ships, proved to be relevant," he added.

If the US were to launch a 'surprise' attack on Iran, it remains unlikely that either Russia or China would come to Tehran's direct aid and engage militarily with Washington.

However, it's possible more Chinese and Russian ships would be sent to patrol flashpoint waters, making things more delicate and difficult in terms of US Navy maneuvering and firing.

Pete Hegseth Orders Removal of Top Army Secretary Adviser Linked to Milley Amid Ukraine War Negotiations in Geneva — Promotion List Frozen for Months

Col. David Butler was a senior spokesperson for former Gen. Mark A. Milley, who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2019 to 2023 and later described Trump as “fascist to the core” during the 2024 election.

More recently, Butler was a spokesperson and media strategist for Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, a close personal friend of Vice President J.D. Vance who has played an increasingly prominent role in the Trump administration after a series of missteps and scandals on Hegseth’s part.

Last week, Hegseth demanded that Driscoll fire Butler, according to The Washington Post.

It was the second time since September that the defense secretary had raised the issue, sources told the paper, and Butler’s prior work for Milley appeared to be a key factor in the effort to oust him.

Driscoll had resisted Hegseth’s demands for months, Fox News reporter Jennifer Griffin reported.

But several months ago, Butler was included in a list of about three dozen promotion-eligible Army officers that was supposed to be sent to the White House.

Vladimir Zelensky has ordered a purge of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the successor to the Soviet KGB and the country’s main security agency.

Zelensky said on X that he had met with the SBU’s first deputy head, Aleksandr Poklad, and instructed him “to address the issue of rooting out those in the Security Service of Ukraine, who serve not Ukraine in their positions, but other interests.”

The Ukrainian leader previously cracked down on the SBU in the summer of 2022, just a few months after the escalation of the conflict with Russia. At the time, Zelensky fired SBU chief Ivan Bakanov and the country’s prosecutor general, Irina Venediktova, over claims of “rampant” treason in the two agencies. Hundreds of criminal cases have been launched against SBU employees, with many of its regional chiefs being sacked.

In early January, Zelensky removed SBU head Vasily Malyuk from his post and ordered him to focus on carrying out so-called ‘asymmetric operations’ against Russia. Major General Evgeny Khmara stepped in as the agency’s interim chief.

Liga.net outlet claimed that Malyuk was removed because he was unable to contain last year’s massive corruption scandal in the state nuclear operator Energoatom, which implicated Zelensky’s long-time associate, Timur Mindich, and led to the resignation of two ministers and the Ukrainian leader’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak.

Moscow has accused the SBU of plotting multiple “terrorist attacks” on officials, public figures, and civilian infrastructure inside Russian territory since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

The ACT's first Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People has stepped down from her 'dream role' after an alleged assault.

Vanessa Turnbull-Roberts was appointed to the position in 2024 but has been on extended approved leave since July 2025.

She officially resigned from the role at the end of 2025 following months of questions about her absence in Canberra.

However, Turnbull-Roberts on Tuesday morning alleged she had left her office after being subjected to 'sexual harassment and sexual assault in Canberra by a public servant'.

She cited concern for her 'physical and psychological safety' as reasons why she left the role and added she needed to act in the 'best interests of my family'.

'This conduct has no place in any workplace,' she said.

'Appropriate reports have been made, including to police, and these matters are now with the relevant authorities. This experience has impacted me in ways too shattering for language to fully hold.'

Several ministers had previously voiced their concerns about Turnbull-Roberts' 'persistent absenteeism', reported the Canberra Times last month.

Turnbull-Roberts shot down those report as 'incorrect and harmful'.

'It misrepresented the reality of my decision and caused me further harm. Taking steps to protect one's health and safety should never be distorted or weaponised,' she said.

'No one leaves work of this significance without reason. As a survivor, a mother, and a proud Bundjalung woman, I know what it means to be unprotected in systems meant to provide care. I also know what it means to choose safety when it is not adequately provided.

'I escaped the child 'protection' system at 18, after being forcibly removed from my family and communities at 10 because of racism. I have lived what children and families endure inside these systems.

'My focus since has never wavered: human rights, Indigenous rights, children's safety, and defending mothers and families.'

The Canberra Times claimed that Turnbull-Roberts had a 'part-time presence' in the nation's capital, writing: 'There has been growing disquiet in the ACT First Nations community about the effectiveness of the [Commissioner and her office].'

Turnbull-Roberts on Tuesday said she valued her time as Commissioner, writing that she 'witnessed extraordinary courage' during her tenure.

'I sat with children and young people so often dismissed or silenced and watched them speak with clarity, strength, and spirit.
