No one was allowed access to the Bible/Scriptures back then. Only the priests and rabbis had access and told their congregations what the word of God was. The Bible was not widely available to the laypeople until the 1450s when the Gutenberg Bible was put in print.

I'm currently reading the "Baron Trump's Marvelous Underground Journey" by Ingersoll Lockwood ~ 1892. Pretty trippy stuff for kids.

The original Grimm Brothers tales were absolutely gruesome. Blood and death and horrors unimaginable. They have since been so sanitized they barely resemble the original fables.

Hell, I have seen the extreme dumbing down of recent times in just the past 40 years. Jeopardy used to be interesting and challenging. Couple weeks ago the Tournament of Champions was not even difficult. No fun at all. And their PhD, librarian, social worker contestants were wrong on shit I've known since grade school.
