Halliburton and Desert Storm (Gulf War 1990–91)
During the Gulf War / Operation Desert Storm (1990–91), Halliburton’s most relevant arm was its engineering and construction subsidiary Brown & Root.
After the shooting part of the war ended in February 1991, the Pentagon under Defense Secretary Dick Cheney hired Halliburton’s Brown & Root Services for a major study on how to use private contractors to support U.S. troops in war zones, paying more than $8.5 million for this work.
Halliburton crews were heavily involved in capping and controlling burning Kuwaiti oil wells set ablaze by retreating Iraqi forces; they helped bring hundreds (around 725) of wells under control.
Cheney himself did not join Halliburton until 1995, when he became chairman and CEO, several years after Desert Storm.
So Desert Storm was a turning point where Halliburton expanded from oil‑field work into large‑scale logistics and military support contracting.
