"The crew have now abandoned the vessel and all crew are accounted for with no reported injuries," the maritime security center wrote in an update on X.

The Fix Is In To Defeat Alberta Independence

Last week, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced a referendum for October 19. It will ask Albertans a slate of policy and constitutional questions. Independence, she said the next day, will be added to the ballot if the requisite number of signatures is met in the petition drive, which is likely.

Albertans will get their chance to say if they want to leave Canada.

But Canadian federalists can relax. The Alberta premier is one of them.

The referendum is the fix to defeat Alberta independence.

It will undermine the separatist cause and split the independence vote.

Smith’s referendum will ask whether the province should exercise more control over immigration, social programs, and voter identification. And whether Alberta should pursue constitutional amendments. Give provinces the power to appoint judges to superior courts? Abolish the unelected Senate? Grant provinces the right to opt out of federal programs in areas of provincial jurisdiction without losing federal funding? Give provincial laws priority over federal ones when they conflict?

These referendum questions lead nowhere. Alberta already has constitutional authority over the policy questions. It could exercise more control in these areas tomorrow if it wanted. There is no realistic prospect of amending the Canadian constitution on controversial matters. Smith and her advisors must know that. Continue…

The Canadian Province of the Congregation of the Resurrection of Our Lord elected Father Toby Collins, C.R., who has a long history of supporting and promoting LGBT ideology, as its next superior last month.

Collins, who currently serves as the pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kitchener, Ontario, was officially elected as the next superior of the Resurrectionists’ Canadian Province on February 21, succeeding Father Tim Uniac, C.R., and will begin his term as superior on July 1, 2026. The priest has encouraged the celebration of LGBT “pride month,” repeatedly endorsed the flying of “pride” flags, and even advocated against a ban on “pride” flags being displayed in Catholic schools.

“Fr. Toby has a passion for his vocation which permeates every project he takes on,” the Resurrectionists wrote in a statement following Collins’ election.

“We look forward to seeing how Fr. Toby brings his energy and deep faith in the power of the Resurrection to his new ministry as Provincial Superior,” the statement continued.

Back in June 2021, Collins shared a Facebook post which lauded the raising of an LGBT pride flag at the Waterloo Catholic District School Board’s (WCSB) Education Centre and praised “pride month” as an opportunity to “let everyone know that we are all loved, valued, and always belong as members of God’s family.” Continue…

Canada is offering up to 200 fully funded scholarships for Indian students under a $100 million plan from the University of Toronto, part of a new Canada–India strategy announced Monday. The initiative also includes partnerships between universities and hybrid campuses linking institutions in both countries.

The move comes as India remains Canada’s largest source country for new permanent residents and international students, despite political tensions in recent years and supposed tighter immigration targets by the Mark Carney government over the previous Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The scholarship funding will provide 200 full awards for Indian students across various fields, while 13 new partnerships between Canadian and Indian universities aim to expand student and faculty mobility, research collaboration, and specialised academic programmes.

Three hybrid academic centres are planned in India. Dalhousie University will develop an innovation campus with Indian institutions, and the University of Toronto and McGill University will open Centres of Excellence focused on artificial intelligence research and talent development. These centres are expected to join Indian and Canadian researchers.

For candidates, Immigration.ca notes the agreement has practical implications: continued demand for Indian students in targeted, high-skill fields; stronger research-to-permanent residence pathways; expanded tech employment opportunities; and potential future business mobility benefits under a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The partnership reinforces India as a priority partner in Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.

The federal government has repeatedly claimed it believes immigration must support economic growth and productivity, and that Canada’s partnership with India aligns directly with that objective by focusing on energy, AI, critical minerals, and advanced manufacturing. Skilled Indian professionals and researchers remain well-positioned within Canada’s immigration system, Immigration.ca says.

It's been analyzed by immigration watchdogs that Canada is recalibrating immigration to what it calls “sustainable levels,” but that sustainability does not mean retreat. Instead, the focus is sharper targeting of high-skilled talent, research-intensive collaboration, technology-driven economic growth, and diversified global supply chains.

The 13 new memorandums of understanding between Canadian and Indian schools come after a February 2026 visit by more than 20 Canadian university presidents to India—the largest Canadian academic delegation ever between the two.

Health officials have issued a public warning after confirmed measles exposures at two major Edmonton hospitals, urging potentially affected patients and visitors to monitor for symptoms and review their vaccination records.

The alert covers multiple areas within University of Alberta Hospital and Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, on February 25 and February 28.

On February 25, exposure windows were identified between 8:35 a.m. and 1 p.m. in several clinics and public areas, including the Stollery’s Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic and Audiology Clinic (1G1), University of Alberta Hospital’s Videonystagmography (VNG) Services (1G1), the 112 Street main entrance and north elevators, the second-floor north pedway to 2E, the Edmonton Oilers Ambulatory Clinic (2E), the Otolaryngology (ENT) Clinic, and the Pulmonary Function Lab.

On February 28, possible exposure occurred at the Stollery Children’s Hospital Emergency Department from 5:20 a.m. to 11:50 p.m., and at the University of Alberta Hospital Emergency Department from 10:25 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.

Anyone present at those locations during the specified times who was born in or after 1970 and has received fewer than two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine — or has never had measles — may be at risk of infection. Continue…

Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke of his relationships with U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, and Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi during a fireside chat in Australia this week.

Carney spoke with Michael Fullilove, executive director of the Lowy Institute, an Australian think tank, during the event in Sydney on March 4, where he discussed his relationships with world leaders and touted “middle power” cooperation.

When asked to describe his system for dealing with Trump, Carney said he approaches the U.S. president with “respect, but not obsequiousness.” He added that Trump is “president for a reason,” saying he is a “very successful” politician, and has had success in other areas.

Trump appreciates directness—discussing issues openly and being clear about your position, “particularly in private,” Carney told Fullilove.

“You don’t want to say anything in public that you can’t back up,” he added, noting that it’s best to be “careful in terms of the language that you use with him, but in a way that’s consistent with what you really think.”

In private, Trump is “more interested in your viewpoint on various things,” and this “creates an ability to work through things,” Carney said. Continue…

Carney Appoints Fentanyl Czar to Additional Coast Guard Post in Senior Public Service Shuffle

Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced several changes to the senior ranks of the public service, including giving Canada’s fentanyl czar two additional roles.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a March 4 statement that Kevin Brosseau, who is currently commissioner of Canada’s Fight Against Fentanyl, will also become senior associate deputy minister of National Defence and commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard.

Brosseau, who formerly served as deputy commissioner of the RCMP, was appointed to the newly created position of fentanyl czar in February 2025. The PMO said that in his role, Brosseau was to work “closely” with his counterparts in the United States to accelerate Canada’s work to detect and dismantle the fentanyl trade.
