The governor general's travel expenses have once again increased despite Canadians struggling to make ends meet.

The Department of National Defence increased spending on travel for Governor General Mary Simon by 21 per cent in 2024–25, according to records obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF), reversing a brief decline that followed parliamentary scrutiny of her expenses.

National Defence spent approximately $3 million last year on travel tied to the governor general, covering personnel, equipment, transportation, meals and accommodations. The year prior, spending had dropped to about $2.5 million after MPs criticized what they called “absurd” costs. Continue…

The Government of Canada has just named Dr. Joss Reimer as the next Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO), effective April 1, 2026.

This three-year term is for a role that's supposed to be the “lead public health professional” guiding the nation through threats, crises, and the ever-present “resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases.”

Appointed by Minister of Health Marjorie Michel, the press release from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) notes that Dr. Reimer’s ‘expertise’ included being the medical lead and spokesperson for Manitoba’s COVID-19 Vaccine Taskforce.

This is the same public health apparatus that spent years pushing rushed-to-market, experimental therapies as “safe and effective,” while dismissing legitimate concerns about adverse events, contamination risks, and informed consent as “misinformation.” Continue…

Ottawa to spend $248,600 studying upgrades to Port of Churchill Arctic shipping hub

https://www.westernstandard.news/news/ottawa-to-spend-248600-studying-upgrades-to-port-of-churchill-arctic-shipping-hub/71314

The federal government is spending another $248,600 to study whether Canada’s only Arctic deepwater port can finally live up to decades of political promise.

In a statement released Thursday, Transport Canada said the funding will go toward a “market sounding exercise” to assess the long-term growth potential of the Port of Churchill in northern Manitoba.

The port, which opened in 1931 with a shipment of 277,000 bushels of Prairie wheat bound for Liverpool, has long been touted as a strategic northern gateway.

Yet it remains operational for only about 16 weeks a year, when Arctic waters are sufficiently thawed for navigation.

Officials say the new study will consult senior executives in mining, energy, potash, grain and northern resupply sectors to gauge whether major infrastructure upgrades could make the port commercially viable year-round.

The review will examine the feasibility of expanded icebreaking support, installation of a Class 1 railway along the 1,100-kilometre corridor south to Winnipeg and construction of an all-season road connection.

A 2025 briefing note from Prairies Economic Development Canada acknowledged the port’s uncertain viability while emphasizing its unique status as Canada’s only Arctic deepwater facility. Continue…

Canadian woman, 108, one of oldest to receive Second World War medal from Britain

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/canadian-woman-108-wwii-veteran

When Beau Harper met 108-year-old Joan Fuller at last year’s Remembrance Day service in Mount Hope, Ont., he knew he was witnessing something rare.

“She was 107 years old at the time and still living independently,” Harper told the National Post on Thursday.

Harper, a teacher in Peterborough and founder of Soldier Search, introduced himself and asked Fuller and her family whether she would consider being interviewed for his organization, which preserves the histories of Canadian veterans. She agreed.

When Harper visited her home in November to conduct the interview, he wasn’t sure what to expect. At the time of the interview, Fuller lived in Burlington but since then has moved to Fergus.

“Her memory was fantastic. She was walking around her home with her walker, and she had so many interesting stories to tell,” he said.

Born Lucie Anna Joan Belmar in England in 1918, Fuller grew up as Europe edged toward conflict. She would eventually join the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force in 1943, serving as a radar operator, tasked with detecting planes and determining if they were enemy aircrafts, according to her Soldier Search profile.

After the war, she emigrated to Canada with her soon-to-be husband in 1947, landing in Burlington.

But, amid demobilization and international relocation, something was missed. Her 1939-1945 war medal never arrived.

The 1939-1945 war medal was awarded to those who completed at least 28 days of service between Sept. 3, 1939, and Sept. 2, 1945. Continue…
