Houston right to cut taxpayer handouts to radical publishers, says watchdog

https://www.rebelnews.com/houston_right_to_cut_taxpayer_handouts_to_radical_publishers_says_watchdog

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston eliminated the $700,000-a-year Publishers Assistance Program as part of a series of budget cuts announced in late February.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston for cancelling government subsidies to book publishers and is urging other governments to follow suit.

“Houston made the right call,” said Devin Drover, Atlantic director and general counsel for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to bankroll publishing houses that openly describe themselves as politically driven and committed to pushing radical ideology.”

Nova Scotia’s now-cancelled Publishers Assistance Fund previously distributed taxpayer money to private publishing houses. The CTF criticized the program after it provided $135,000 in public funds to Fernwood Publishing in 2024.

Fernwood Publishing, which operates out of Halifax and Winnipeg, describes itself as “politically driven, not profit driven” and says its mandate is to publish “radical analysis” aimed at contributing to “structural change.” Continue…

Massive B.C. ranch sale stalls as Aboriginal title spooks buyers

https://www.rebelnews.com/massive_bc_ranch_sale_stalls_as_aboriginal_title_spooks_buyers

Prospective buyers of farmland in the British Columbia Interior are hesitant to close real estate deals given the uncertainty surrounding land rights in the province following the Cowichan ruling.

A massive offering of ranch land in British Columbia has failed to attract buyers, with uncertainty surrounding Aboriginal title emerging as a major concern for investors.

Monette Farms, one of Canada’s largest agricultural operators, listed 12 ranches in the B.C. Interior totalling more than 45,000 acres in what was marketed as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to purchase prime ranch land. But according to Country Life in B.C., the initial offering through Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers closed without a single bid.

The properties, which include the historic Home Ranch near 70 Mile House, were first offered with a January 9 deadline. With no sales, the process moved to a “tender by auction” system with a March deadline.

Despite the lack of bids, Ritchie Bros. says interest remains high. But industry observers say the bigger issue is growing uncertainty about land tenure in B.C., particularly surrounding Aboriginal title claims.

One ranch deal is already known to have collapsed after local Indigenous groups told a prospective buyer they would not support the transfer of the Crown grazing licences required to operate the property. Continue…

Fr. Ripperger: Abomination of desolation refers to Catholic Church becoming ‘compromised’

https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/fr-ripperger-abomination-of-desolation-refers-to-catholic-church-becoming-compromised/

The Book of Daniel refers to the abomination of desolation as tied up with the abolition of a public 'daily sacrifice.'

Exorcist Father Ripperger shared in an explosive recent interview that Scripture’s reference to the “abomination of desolation” taking its place in “the temple” is “actually a reference to the Catholic Church being compromised.”

Fr. Ripperger explained the reference in an interview with podcaster and former U.S. Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan while refuting Protestants who mistakenly believe that the Book of Daniel’s reference to the “temple” in which the abomination of desolation will stand at the time of the Antichrist is the Jewish Temple.

These Protestants want to help rebuild the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem in an effort to usher in the Antichrist, and by extension, the Second Coming of Christ, Fr. Ripperger noted.

“The Fathers of the Church are clear that it will never be rebuilt and that the reference to the abomination of desolation taking its seat in the temple is actually a reference to the Catholic Church,” explained the exorcist priest. Continue…

Ottawa man appeals after bank accounts frozen under Emergencies Act

https://www.westernstandard.news/news/ottawa-man-appeals-after-bank-accounts-frozen-under-emergencies-act/71742

Lawyers for Ottawa-area resident Evan Blackman have filed an appeal arguing that the freezing of his bank accounts under the federal Emergencies Act violated his rights under section 8 of the Charter, which protects Canadians against unreasonable search and seizure.

Blackman was arrested on February 18, 2022, during a large police operation that cleared Freedom Convoy protestors from downtown Ottawa.

He faced charges of mischief and obstructing a peace officer.

Hours after his release, Blackman discovered he could no longer access funds in any of his bank accounts. His bank informed him that the accounts had been frozen under emergency financial measures enacted by the federal government during the protest.

Court evidence showed police shared information with financial institutions identifying individuals connected to vehicles in the protest zone.

Institutions were then required to freeze accounts and report financial information for those designated as part of the operation.

In November 2025, the Ontario Court of Justice convicted Blackman of mischief and obstructing a peace officer and rejected his request to stay the charges, ruling the frozen accounts were separate from his arrest and did not affect criminal proceedings.

Blackman is now appealing to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, arguing the trial judge applied the wrong legal test and failed to consider whether the account freezes were part of the same coordinated operation against protestors.

“Freezing someone’s bank account is an extraordinary use of state power," Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms lawyer Chris Fleury said.

"When the government interferes with a person’s ability to access their own money, the courts must carefully examine whether those actions respected the protections guaranteed by the Charter.”

The appeal contends that the financial measures and police enforcement occurred simultaneously, involved the same law enforcement agencies, and were intended to achieve the same goal of ending the protest.

If successful, the appeal could lead to a new hearing on Blackman’s application for a stay of proceedings.

Olivia Chow absent from Toronto synagogue shooting news conference

https://www.westernstandard.news/news/olivia-chow-absent-from-toronto-synagogue-shooting-news-conference/71743

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow was not present at a news conference addressing the recent synagogue shootings in Toronto, prompting questions from media and commentators about the mayor’s absence during a high-profile public response to the incident.

Officials and community representatives gathered to address the shootings and provide updates, but the mayor did not attend the event.

The news conference was held as authorities and community leaders responded to the synagogue shootings and discussed security concerns and the impact on Toronto’s Jewish community.

Chow had not publicly explained her absence from the event. It was not immediately clear whether the mayor had been invited or whether a scheduling conflict prevented her attendance.

Reaction on social media following the news conference included criticism, questions about the organization of the event, and debate over the mayor’s absence. Some users asked whether the mayor had been invited, while others questioned why she was not present.

City officials have not released additional details about the mayor’s schedule or involvement in the response to the incident.

Police and municipal authorities continue to investigate the synagogue shootings as community leaders call for increased vigilance and security measures across Toronto’s religious institutions.
